Another story about Gamestop/EB Games

Here is a little story about my experience with Gamestop today:

I purchased Deep Labrynth (yesterday) used from Gamestop for $29.99. It was probably the worst DS game I've ever played, so I decided to return it and get another.

Anywho, I went back to the store the next day and tried to exchange it. I saw Megaman ZX NEW for $29.99. I took the case off the rack, and brought it to the register. The cashier got the game from the drawer and gave it to me. I figure if something is new, it should be sealed right? Anywho, I walk out, go to my bus stop, pop the game, in, and then I noticed the "continue" selection was lit. I selected it and low and behold, there was a save! If something is NEW shouldn't it be wiped clean?

I walked all the way back to the Gamestop and told the guy that I wanted a sealed copy because the one I got was obviously used. He informed me that some of the employees play the games once they get them in. He checked his log book and had no record of anyone playing it. That's fishy. He said that I should just wipe it clean. I'm NOT going to pay a new price for a used game. Oh and I forgot with tax, the game came out to $32 somethin.

Anyway, I decided to get Rocketslime which was a little more expensive ($34.99). It came out to $37 somethin. He only credited $30 of my purchase, and not the tax from the previous purchase. Which means I had to play $7. That's a total of $9 to make a damn exchange! It's retarded.

This time I got an actual sealed copy.

It's fishy as hell. If a game is played, regardless if it's an employee, IT'S USED!

I REFUSE to purchase anything used from EB games/ Gamestop unless it's used, or new that's sealed. This is nonsense.

Well, maybe in the future you should be careful what you buy :nod: I have no idea about the sates with all your rights and so on but in my honest opinion if you buy something and it's not faulty then you have no right to return it. At least that's how it works here and the UK. Sounds harsh but that's how I see it. Still, having to pay extra for tax seems very odd.

You can always return used games at EB games regardless if it's faulty or not.

The whole tax thing was nonsense as well.

Even sealed games from EB/GS can be returns that are illegally resealed and sold as new (it is technically classified as "fraudulent misrepresentation"). The refund should have included the tax and double-charging the tax is a federal offense. I would contact your state's attorney general and file a complaint against them. It probably will not do much for you directly, but if they get enough complaints they may take action against the company.

Well thanks to ebs odd way gamestop followed suit, which is if a game is new condition and is hardly played, they sell it as new.

Though technically new should be a sealed copy. However, due to thing such as stores having what they call a gut copy (the last copy of the game thats used for display), they will sell it as new as no one has purchased it.

As for the tax thing, when getting a return or credit alot of places wont give you tax back.

I agree with Yakumo on the return policy, but again there are companies in the states that will go the extra mile to keep you satisfied.

Most place I know will pretty much tell you that you can only get an exhance for an item if its defective.

My friends have never been able to get money or credit on a used game they didnt like at gamestop, so consider yourself lucky.

Opened accessories & all used items can be returned/exchanged w/in 7 days.

Opened new video games, new PC games, & new systems can be exchanged for the identical item w/in 7 days

Its as easy as claiming False Advertising. It wasnt new, so therefore you can get your cash back. Happened to me and my brother a few times

They definitely should be. Like others have said it's against Federal law to not refund the tax as well. Any national or even regional company would know this and it should never happen. Though I wouldn't be suprised if smaller locally based business pull this kind of junk all the time.

I would definitely speak to a manager at Gamestop and raise some hell. If you make it clear that you're not upset because you were shorted a couple bucks, but that you're more worried about them breaking Federal tax law they might try to "silence" you with some free/discounted goods(if you're lucky).

I've had this happen plenty of times (without the "return" part). I'll go to buy a game and ask for a new copy, and they usually will pull something out from under the desk and stick it in the box I gave them.

Last time I went, one of the sales people flipped out because I told him I wanted a sealed copy. I don't think I'll be going back to EB, especially since they stopped selling used PC games.

There's no reason to go that far, unless you're doing it out of principal.

All you have to do is bring the reciept in next time you buy something and show them exactly where they double charged you for the tax. At the least they should eat that amount on your next purchase.

With all these occurences listed, this why I hate going to either eb or gamestop. Some of them are alright and are pretty mellow.

But alot the employees there have some sorta attitude or hang up.

Even sometimes when you buy a certain game the employee will leave some time of sarcastic smart ass remark.

God forbid if the person rining you up doesn't like the system you purchased a game for.

I still am a little upset with the local Gamestop in town that threw away all the cases AND manuals of their used PS1 games to "save space".

Yeh. and yet they still expect you to pay $35 for a copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, greatest hits version WITHOUT the case or manual, just the disc.

It's a game that is in demand. If you don't like the price you can always buy elsewhere. It's not a very rare title as there are always copies on eBay.

How is the service in japan at regular gamestores yakumo?

Normal like in the UK :lol: Nobody gives a shit what type of game you buy. If you buy a game that the sales staff likes they may let you know that you are buying a good game. The other day I bought a few Saturn games including an adult title. The staff (a woman as well) made no comment of facial gesture but did comment on the RPG Tilk. She told me that she had played it many years ago and that she enjoyed it.

For returns you can't return anything unless it's broken plus you must present a receipt. I fully support this rule. When I was a manager in HMV we had to put up with many arse holes bringing stuff back just because they didn't like it. Tuff ! People are lazy fucks these days. Check before you buy I say. It's part of the excitement anyway.

Years back I sold GameStop a.k.a. "Funcoland" Yoshi's Story for $7. Saw it the next day for sale at $49.99! :crying:

Yea EB is a really bad store.One time my friend was in there just looking around and this guy came in with 20 or so Nes games,EB offerd like 10 dollars.Then my friend said I'll give you 20 dollars right now for them.He got them but the guy at EB told him he's not allowed to do that and told he could never come back to the store.He could care less about that,he was happy he got a good deal on some Nes games.
