    Mega Drive VGA?

I have been doing some browsing and I can't find any info on modding a Mega Drive to VGA nor any VGA cables - is it possible?

It outputs a 15kHz sync signal (TV resolution) along with its RGB. If there were some way to get a VGA (31kHz) sync signal out of it we'd have seen it by now. Perhaps you can use one of those el cheapo composite VGA boxes to do what's needed to the sync and use the RGB lines directly from a system? Now that's an idea... if there's no reason that wouldn't work.

You can try the expensive XRGB-2...

So, if I decide to buy an XRGB-2, I should only use RGB cables?
Yes, we recommend purchasing the XRGB-2 only if you are using RGB (Japan standard RGB, not European SCART) or D-terminal (Japan standard only) cables with your console. Using S-Video or composite video with the XRGB-2 is a waste and not recommended. In fact, we steadfastly forbid it.

SNES s-video on an XRGB 2 looks great, maybe you could try that. But, yea all composite stuff looks wonky.

That's what I was thinking with hax0ring a cheap VGA box. If you could feed it composite video and take its outputted sync signals, and combine with the original RGB from the console, that would be perfect. I've not tried this though. :smt017

For stripping sync for regular RGB use a LM1881 (although unnecessary for MD):

It should be no surprise that RGB looks better...

    Some reading on scan doubling:

well unless there's a vga encoder chip in there it wouldn't output vga anyway,, but using a syncblaster (converting 15khz frequency to 31khz frequency) with scart in and d-sub out (or convertion box) although your monitor may accept a 15khz image (most crt's do, few lcd)
