There's Contra Shattered Soldier for PS2, and it's tough as nails.
There's also Neo-Contra, which has its fun moments.

I know more about shooters, though.
If you're into imported games, get Raiden 3 and Mushihime Sama, which are good shooters. Shikigami no Shiro is good as well, and very cheaply available this side of the ocean. Not 100% similar to what you request, but certainly good 2 player fun.

And, of course, you can never go wrong with Metal Slug.

you get varrying degrees of fun though with the selection of the appropriate Metal Slug number/title;) The first and second ones were by far superior than the rest, for me
You can ask for any old woman
You can ask for an army of ants
You can ask for a pillar of poison
You can ask for sheep and shavers

    And you can die for
Be careful what you wish for

Gekido: Urban Fighters. That's a PSX game though so graphics are shitty compared to PS2 graphics.
