Install PSBBN/HDD-OSD on other Region PS2 Consoles.(update 2)

Rating: 3 votes, 5.00 average.
update:i have updated the guide with new instructions for the new "mbr installer tool"

note: NONE of the methods described here will work for a SCPH-10000 or SCPH-15000 PS2 Console.
but you will be able to use the harddrive in one of these 2 consoles, after you installed it on a SCPH-30000+ console, but you also need to have the memory card updated already installed. but keep in mind, online software like Final Fantasy 11, Nobunaga no Yabou Online or other PS-BBN download software might not work then.

installing the hdd-osd to any non JAP/US ps2:

note:this will work with either SONY-HDD's, or standart PC-HDD's if you have a modchip with
ATAD patching.

1. extract hackchips bb-navigator disc.

2. burn that iso to DVD.

3. check that ule's "disc control" function is turned on, put in a original DVD game and do a swap trick to change it with the hackchip bb-navigator disc.

4. go to the root of the dvd with the ule filebrowser.

5. execute the "HD_UTILI.ELF", when the elf is loaded, click on install hdd-software.

6. extract the "ps2_mbr_installer" and put it on a usb drive, copy the "mbr 032" from the "already_patched_PSBBN_FILES.rar" into the MBR installer folder, rename it to "MBR.KELF",
plug the usb drive in your ps2, boot up ule, and bootup "FIXMBR.elf" from the usb drive, it will install the patched mbr.

7. after that is done, start up the "hacked-ule"
go to filebrowser and copy the hosdsys.elf from the "already patched_HOSDSYS_FILE.rar" to "__system/osd100"

8. pull out the fmcb memory card (if you have one) restart your ps2 and the HDD should appear in the browser.

Alternate: but if you do not have a SONY-HDD or ATAD-PAtching modchip, but you still want
to use the hdd-osd to launch homebrew but keep in mind games with hdd support wont work
with this, like ffxi, they still need a original sony-hdd or a atad -patching modchip, then
use the following here, a readme file for propper use is included:

installing the bb-navigator to any non JAP ps2:

note: i have been told from l_oliviera that PSBBN will not work with ATAD patching modchips, you need a SONY-HDD for it to work.
i cant verify that because i use a SONY-HDD, and don't have a modchip.

1. extract hackchips bb_navigator disc.

2. burn that iso to DVD.

3. check that ule's "disc control" function is turned on, put in a original DVD game and do a swap trick to change it with the hackchip bb-navigator disc.

4. go to the root of the dvd with the ule filebrowser.

5. execute the "BBNAV_NT.ELF" or "BBNAV_PA.ELF", when the elf is loaded, click on the third entry "PlayStationBB Navigator(no insuto-ru)" to install.
note: it will require you to have ~14GB of free space on your hdd.

6. extract the "ps2_mbr_installer" and put it on a usb drive, copy the "mbr" from the "already_patched_HOSDSYS_FILES_US.rar" into the MBR installer folder, rename it to "MBR.KELF",
plug it in your ps2, boot up ule, and bootup "FIXMBR.elf" from the usb drive, it will install the patched mbr.

7. after that is done, start up the "hacked-ule"
go to filebrowser and copy the "osdboot.elf" from the "already patched_PSBBN_FILES.rar" to "__system/p2lboot"

8. pull out the fmcb memory card (if you have one) restart your ps2 and it should boot directly into PSBBN, and have fun exploring the last PSBBN channel left "Koei Tecmo Games".

If anyone's interested, you can replace the Files in either the FILE1 or FILES folders with say the files of the Japanese HDD 1.0 Utility disc or another version of BB Nav if you want. This might only be useful if you have a Japanese system and don't want BB Nav, or if you want an older version than 0.32, I believe BB Nav 0.31 and older has support for NetMD that was stripped on 0.32.

"PSBBN 0.31 just seems to be updated to prevent patching so that a modchip and a Linux Kit cannot run the program without an official HDD or on a foreign PS2, as was possible with earlier versions." - Jeffrey McDonald

So does someone tried psbbn 0.30?

as long as it has the same MBR, and "osdboot.elf" it "could" work, but i guess it wont because the older ones used a different booting method.
, but then again that could be only the 0.10 and 0.20, cant remember anymore.

as it sais its only patched, so I guess not. Looking at the pictures of installations 0.30, 0.31 and 0.32 are the same. I cant find a disk.

mmm oh i forget this "ATAD patching" i can't configured my modchip;;; so if i use winhex for replace MBR i need ATAD patch in my HDD to?
  11. richi902's Avatar
if you dont use a "sony hdd" then you need a modchip with atad patching to run the hdd-osd or ps-bbn,
if you dont have any of the 2, you can still configure FMCB to auto boot the decrypted hdd-osd(which is ATAD patched) from a memory card.
keep in mind, using this method will not allow you to use official hdd compatible software, like Final Fantasy 11 or other games with a "install feature".
it will still allow you to use "bootable partitions" for homebrew or the upcoming mini-opl, which will allow you to boot games directly from the browser/game-channel.
i might write up a tutorial about that soon anyway, for the currently public available version, which is installable via kermit.

i just upgraded my old 80gb WD IDE hdd to a 200gb seagate IDE, im having issues with getting the hdd to show up in the browser, i have used the hdd utility disk to format and install the hdd software and i have fallowed the tutorial to a T, is this even possible with larger hard drives ?

    EDIT...
i have it installed and working on my 200gb hdd, unfortunately there is only 128gb of the 200gb usable. i hope this can be patched in the future so we can use larger hard drives with this amazing hack. i may bring out my old 80gb hdd just for testing this with and wait for larger drive support before i use it on my main drive, keep up the good work guys, this will be awesome when its polished

Try installing this MBR KELF with FIXMBR.elf after installing the HDD Software. Hope it works. I didn't try to launch the LBA48 patched hosdsys from the MBR but I suppose it should be fine...
