Scrap "Revolution", the console is now named "Wii"
http://revolutionmedia.ign.com/revolution/image/article/703/703593/nintendo-talk-to-ign-about-wii-20060427034939324.jpg
April 27, 2006 - Nintendo revealed this morning that the official name of its formerly codenamed Revolution system is Nintendo Wii.
The Big N explained the decision behind the name in a statement, which we've provided below:
Introducing... Wii. As in "we."
While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames (http://revolution.ign.com/articles/703/703502p1.html#) that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

I thought it was joke when I first read it.
They better make one hell of a logo, because the name sucks so it needs compensation.

Lower case i's, like iPod. Similarity to Intel's recent marketing scheme (viiv, in case it passed you by). Looks a bit like Wifi, which is tech of the moment right now. Kind of ticking the boxes.
Not a hugely inspiring name, but then within a month we'll all stop thinking about what it means and just accept it as the new Nintendo console. When you think about "Playstation" it doesn't occur to you that it's the opposite of "workstation", it's just a Playstation and that's that.

Is nintendo smoking too much wiid?
EDIT: I know a few languages, including greek, that "wii" would not be pronounced as it should, and would just make the market hate it, be it for the lame name.
And I thought GameCube was a bad name.
Also, the fact that everyone i know has heard about the name revolution, and they now change it to "wii" will create the same confusion that people had who knew about the dolphin, but never got to realize that it was the gamecube.
I have people who walk in my office asking me, after seeing a familiar logo.. "Is that a dolphin next to your gamecube?I thought that thing never got released - does it have better specs than the cube?"

From Joystiq:
I need a Wii now! I can't wait until this fall!
"Mum, I finished my homework. Can I play with my Wii some more?"
"Hey Mom, Roger's bringing his Wii over. We're going to connect his Wii to my Wii and then we'll play all night."
"We are the Knights who say Wii!"
Wii Willy Winky runs through town, upstairs and downstairs in his nightgown. Knocking on the window, crying through the lock "Are the children all in bed? It’s past eight o’clock."
"Pass me that wemote contwol pwease?" -- Elmer Fudd redux
"Do you have any Wii in stock?" asked the customer. "Or course we do," exclaimed the clerk, "Urine GameStop!"

I kind of see what they are doing, but it is hardly inspiring. My first impression was a negative one. I do hope I warm to it as I really want to like the Rev/Wii. I will not let a name give me a downer on a console but this is the first negative thought I have had about the Rev/Wii. (Give me a good month before I'm used to it)
Oh and sorry to be so childish, but Wii does sound rather like wee.
EDIT - Japanese side of things http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060428/wii.htm apparently it is going to be written ウィー.

I'm speechless... No, wait, I'm not. This is a really bad name and logo. I thought "Go" was bad, but now, I wouldn't mind it so much.
Oh well, I'll buy it anyway.

There's some words that have a certain "force" when spelled. Words such as "XBoX (ex box) and "PlayStaTion" (capitals indicate vocal spelling force) . Try shouting "Wii", and you ll run out of breath. It just doesn't sound loud enough. iPoD does on the other hand, and so does ViiV.
Wii also sounds like the French word "oui" , and to name a product "wii".. I can't imagine my granpa wanting to play with a "wii" or my parents daring to ask me for the controller of the "wii". Bad impression, very bad.

has anyone figured out it is no longer the revmote! it's now the WiiMOTE!!!
I also hate the name, but the gamespot article does have a point. names like dreamcast sound cool, but for some reason didn't sell. the "market researchers" say the name will create a buzz because it can be referenced to so many other things. just off the topof my head:
peeing
small
a rollercoaster ride "weeeeee"
"we" as in 1st person plural
weewee like penis or wiener
Wiifi will probably come up
wheel wiil
i still find the name stupid, but at least it will generate much needed attention.

When will the marketing idiots (yes, this name actually pisses me off) learn that people do not buy consoles based on the name? Nintendo has their head up their own asses if they think that the symbolism surrounding the use of Wii/We is going to mean a damn thing to people who buy the console. People will buy it because it is Nintendo or because there is a game that they want to play on it, so why give it a retarded name like this?

Anyway, I think its not that bad, personally. I like revolution better, but It's not like the name will change anything anyway.
They chose Wii because it's stupid and it gets people talking, but they should have named it something more sinister, because all the 18-25 year old male crowd is too concerned about their macho image to risk it with a girly sounding console. It should have been the Nintendo Angr, Devl, or Slamr, like all those cell phones razr, pebl, and rokr. Better yet, the Nintendo Skiit, "yo, did you get the new Nintendo Skiit Skiit?" They would sell 50 million consoles if their ad-campaign was "You are gay if you don't get one of these" or "Better buy a Wii, because no girl is going to touch yours"

Tall the 18-25 year old male crowd is too concerned about their macho image to risk it with a girly sounding console.Speak for yourself, I fall squarly in that demographic and bought a Gamecube, despite it sounding like a kid's toy to western ears and with the oh-so-obvious "gaycube" entendre. Names become meaningless.
It should have been the Nintendo Angr, Devl, or SlamrThe only way those names could be any worse is if they were followed by "xtreme". I guess somebody out there does like all this bullshit "edgy" marketing... :noooo:

Nintendo never listens. They did the same kind of mistake with the gamecube's image, and turned a perfectly healthy (hardware-wise) console into a purple toybox with a handle for crying out loud. The crowd hated at first when they saw it, and people still make fun of it today. I don't see the name "wii" doing any better than that, no matter how used we get to the image.
The playstation is called a playstation and doesnt have "we" in it, and it sells more than anything, not to mention brings everyone together since everyone and his dog have one, and trade games at school etc.

Actually a lot of people say that the name Playstation is bad as well, because it sounds like a kindergartners activity set.
Playstation and Xbox may be boring names, but still they arent as terrible as Wii.
As much as it pains me, this may be the death of Nintendo. Sure there may be a big Nintendo fanbase, but even they cant save them, unless they form some sort of group whose plans are to buy 4 or 5 Wiis / REVOS a person and as many games as possible to save Nintendo. However, Microsoft did say they might leave console games after this, so thats less competiton for Sony and Nintendo.

I'm with Fabrizo on this one. The level at which this has hurt my support of Nintendo is at this point beyond my own comprehension. I haven't really sat down and played a video game in well over a year now. The revolution was perhaps going to change that. I was going to buy a revolution and if for any reason, just to support The big N for doing the right things for a change. The whole Revolution thing almost brought a tear to my eye and for a fleeting instant it reminded me of why I loved the game industry.
I'm strongly opinionated. It's true. I'm sure most people will not agree with my thoughts on this.

That's for sure the dumbest name for a console i ever heared! But it totally fits in Nintendos concept of keeping things simple and attracting new players.
It's a cheap console for simple fun-games with a dumb name and a crazy controller for gamers that usually don't play. If i weren't working for a videogame magazine i wouldn't buy it!
As bashing without being constructive would be lame: Nintendo would have done better by just naming the revolution "Nintendo". That would have been great - just like NES/SNES and Genesis times when everyone had either a "Nintendo" or "Sega". As no one has a "Sony" or "Microsoft" today they would have done something either cool and retro.

Nintendo hasn't had my support for years. I was going to buy the Rev because, in my opinion, if they fail now, they may never get another chance. I was giving my support to show that the last of the 'old school' could survive and hopefully change the industry for the better. It's not just the name change that has me miffed here. It's more of the mission statement and the fact that just when things look good for them, they do something irrational and foolish.

Sweet. I didn't get to see the dev kit but I got to see the Wii Controller and hold it. That thing is light and smaller than I thought it would be. It's about 5 inches long. How I got to see it is because I found out a local developer here is working on a Revolution game, thats all I know. The wii is short and sweet, IMO. Also got to hold a DS Lite, too.
TOnight I went to a local IGDA meeting and the guest speaker is the president of a local game studio here in my town. From that meeting, I'm seeing the Wii as a true gaming console, not a multimedia station like the 360 and PS3 will be. It will be cheap. Easy to program compared to the 360 and especially the PS3. Nintendo is basically making a console that will have fun games that are easy to pick up and get into.
Depending on the games that come out for it, I might end up getting one.

So anyway... I'll still have my Nintendo 5th gen console no matter what it's name (Wii is more sensible than AssBlaster 5000, I've already predicted your clever response to the "whatever name" statement). Sucks to the oh-so-coveted 18-25 demographic who is (stereo)typically too dense to look past petty differences. C'mon, Wii doesn't sound all that bad. Penis jokes aside, insert obligatory "it's all about the games" quote here, give it a rest. I'm as shocked as you all, but this is hardly the huge forshadowing or death knell you all hype it out to be.

Cry me a river, people.
One made from Wii. (Damn, those pee jokes never get old.)
We'll live with the name, and it'll turn more heads as time goes by. Some positive, some negative. It will bring attention, and while it may be confusing to some people, I hardly think it's the silver bullet that will put Nintendo down or anything. That's just too much. Anyhow, Ninty has succeeded in building up an audience for the Wii, so it can best bring it on to all the bitches out there. (Meant in a jestful way not directed at you guys.)

Nah, that kind of naming will only come around when EA starts making their own console.
I fail to see the problem with the name. its no worse then Xbox or Playstation.
My problem isn't really with the name itself (though it is ripe for the puns), it is with the "we" concept that Nintendo is trying to force upon us. I do not like playing games with other people; plain and simple. The concept of a console where "we can all play together" just means that there is going to be even more of a shift from single player games to multiplayer games.
I feel that it also reinforces how "stupid" corporations believe their consumer base to be. Sure, the "Revolution" was a cheesy name and I'm sure that over time the "Wii" might be accepted. However, for all the bashing Nintendo regularly takes for pandering to children or younger gamers, they consistently ignore the older segment of gamers in favor of childish marketing like this. I really do think that if they continue in this fashion, they will start to lose their market share.

I can imagine social services having a busy time as well:
last night me and my little boy were playing with my wii, we were waving it around the room for hours. Granny didn't seem too keen at first, so the Mrs had to take it in hand and show her how to use it, it's a great family bonding experience!

Some idiot who has no idea about English yet thought it would be cool never the less. Wii  The worst name for a console yet and that includes crap such as Mega Duck and Game Mate. I would say that the console name would stay revolution based on this latest read. If you have visited nintendo's official website, it's http://revolution.nintendo.com - that said, i did go to some website registering providers to see if "wii" and its related names were taken. Take a look for yourself at www.register.com (http://www.register.com)
EDIT: make a domain whois on www.wii.com to see who got it and WHEN, and you ll soon realize that nintendo would have made a good offer by now.

Interesting. It does not appear that it has been processed yet, but that does not mean that it has not been filed. Judging from Nintendo's past actions, I really do not think that they are "smart" enough to use a viral marketing campaign like this. Granted, I will be happy if they have a different name ready (assuming that the real name isn't wiitarded too), but I really do not think that this is the case.
Just to note, Nintendo always trademarks their systems with the word "Nintendo" in front of the name (i.e. "Nintendo DS"). As of yet, their are no "Nintendo" trademarks for the new system.

There's always the possibility that the answer lies somewhere in the middle. Nintendo announced something extreme, and if people went with it, they d keep it, if not, they d pretend it was a marketing trick. Either way, the possibility of a win is large. I d lean towards Revolution for the name incase it is not Wii, although a classic name such as N.E.S, and all it stands for, would be better - it is going to be a Nintendo Entertainment System after all.

It's just that those who proliferate the phallic/urinary jokes are taking it too far and distorting the name's image. Yes, it's TOO EASY to poke fun at. I know that. Everyone's read the same "Wii" jokes over ad infinitum. The problem isn't necessarily all within the name, but with certain people. I mean, if I hear a double entendre, I'll chuckle, but it won't stop me from enjoying what I set out to do in the first place. Who the hell forsakes a console because of a stupid name? I know--Nintendo isn't catering to everyone's whims; why lower yourself to accepting people's pleas in this case? Sure, you may lose a few sales, but the principle remains that, just because there's a huge disagreement over something as superficial as a name, you're STILL GOING TO GET A DAMN FINE MACHINE. SO QUIT BITCHING.
Wasn't Nintendo suppose to fold eight or nine times already? It keeps *gasp* surviving somehow.. I'm going to go stab and light myself on fire, and then jump out a window if I can't figure THIS out.

Bingo. That's the problem. The name has only been out there for 36 hours, and already it's the laughing stock of the internet. Any publicity is good publicity... that is, until people start photoshopping your multi-billion dollar console covered in urine. The danger here is that the urine covered console becomes the brand image, thus tarnishing the revolution's reputation before it even launches.
