View Full Version : Interesting finds in RE4

Been hacking away at this one for a while, I've found some interesting items which you can equip. One of them is Leons Bio 3.5 "power" where time slows down. So technically this is in the right section  .

You can read about it all here (http://www.thehorrorisalive.com/index.php?id=features&s=re4demos)but a video speaks a thousand words. So instead of killing my sites bandwidth for the month heres a youtube link:

Yeah, those is some great findings Dot, I still wonder why Capcom never clears thier disks of this extra stuff. I suppose it is too meticioulous or somthing. Anyway, great finds dude, I cant wait for the GS code though, I want to try those out myself!

This reminds me, have you tried hacking the PS2 demo?

Just because something is "unused" doesnt mean that removing it is not going to break something somewhere. Unless removing it has benifits (e.g. speeds up game, makes things run better, takes less RAM or something), why bother?

After the hot coffee incident, you can expect to see a lot more developers wiping unused data off of released games... protos/betas/alphas are all still fair game however.

I haven't had a chance to read the full article, but nice job!

I feel screwed. I preordered the limited editions for the GC and PS2 from Gamestop and I didn't receive any demo discs. Lousy Gamestop bastards.

what's the hot coffee incident?

You have got to be joking? The hot coffee incident was when someone figured out a way to "unlock" the part of the game that the devs coded out (a video that even in development the female executive said was too bad). It started out on PS2, by using a cheat disk that would allow you to play a hidden video that was only accessible using the cheat disk. Some parents got pissed and went complaining to the press, saying how bad the devs were, and how they should be shutdown for this, and of course blaming the gaming industry for all of their children’s problems, and bringing all the crap back about other incidents that were somehow magically related back to games. Then they were able to complain enough to the press, and Rockstar, so the game retailers pulled all games off the shelf because the ESRB made Rockstar change the rating to AO. Then the game devs had to go back to the dev room, and re make parts of the game, which made them spend a fortune in time and money. Then they re-released the game with the M rating. They were sued a few times in the process (who isn't in the industry when something likes this happens) and since then Rockstar has maintained their "award" of most controversial games ever. Rockstar rocks, and they have some of the best games ever. It used to be that if a company changed their mind during development, they rather than spend all the time recoding the game to completely remove the part they decided against, they would simply add another section of small code, or code out the part they were removing. This saved them time and money because they wouldn’t have to re adjust everything for the newly removed piece. This also left stuff for modders, and hackers to find and play with, hence the Hot Coffee mod. I hope this was helpful.

It started out on PC, not PS2 ;) They would have never seen the content without the PC being the test

Oh ok, I must have missed that part. I didn't know they made that for pc though.

The Grand Theft Auto San Andreas sex mini-game. You see poor quality models doing suggestive motions with suggestive sound effects. It's the "hot coffee" mod because the girlfriend will ask you in for coffee.

The RE4 stuff is neat, I really enjoyed RE4 and can't wait to see RE5.

They may have left the code in (either so it doesn't wreck something else) but also possibly they were considering implementing it and eventually chose not to. Interesting finds though wish there was a way to get it without GS.

Also, I don't know whether more things will be wiped, it comes down to effort to risk I suspect.

wow, that looks awsome. How does one go about making that work?

Does it have to be a demo disk or can you do that on a standard GC version?

Sorry for not knowing the exact details about the "hot coffee", yet I must admit that I stay away from GTA titles as having played 3 on PC got bored of their vague repetative style. In addition to that, I don't watch TV or read the news so.. I wouldn't know. :)

This wasnt hacked out using a Gameshark device, It was done with good old fasioned hex and rebuilding the GCM.

Cant divulge details yet, the guy who helped me do it spent a considerable amount of time and effort on this and we'd rather there not be ISO's claiming to be RE4 beta's floating around until we can properly cover everything so people know whats beta and what isnt.

I havent tried yet, But chances are retail is a no go. Certain beta's however are full steam ahead

Thanks for the comments all. The article is quite long (and still being worked on) so if you are going to read it get some food ready

Indeed, when I said GS I meant that to my knowldge Dot is working on a set of codes, again to prevent fake betas.

Wow dot thats awsome. My best friend and I love RE4. If this can only be done on a demo then I am off to ebay to pick one of those up.

I cant wait to see his face when he walks in and im destroying zombies in slow mo and going invisable lol. He will freak. Great work man!

Very nice find. http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/images/smilies/023.gif

This is the first time I've seen your site. I'm not much of a Resident Evil fan (although I enjoy the games and the history behind 1.5), but I must say that you've got a great site going.

Hahah, Well the whole article is meant to appeal to die-hard fans who pour over all those kinds of discoveries. I feel that if Im going to do an article on it, I better complete it and list anything of interest even if it doesnt appeal to the more casual Resident Evil audience (not that Im calling you that!).

As detailed and obscure as possible is great.

And you may want to buy a demo disc now as they may surge up in cost soonish if people start taking notice of this.

Well, I wouldnt worry about that much. It seems I may be able to get some of these things working on the final retail release ;)

Dot, when you say Final Retail, do you mean the one that people bought or that one that actually says "Final Retail" on the box?

KaL_YoshiKa
04-19-2006, 11:03 AM
I assume he means the one people bought. Though it may depend on the revision (ie Japanese Edition/NTSC/PAL...and German).

If you get anything cool working on the Final version I believe I may have to sing your praises.

I know abit off topic, didnt want to make another thread about it
Resident Evil 2 was scheduled for March 1997, but producer Shinji Mikami wasn’t pleased with its direction. Capcom bit the bullet, the game was scrapped, and work began from scratch. The abandoned video game is now known as Resident Evil 1. 5. The trailer above is for the 75% finished game before it was shelved.

Yes, and RE 1.5 aka Biohazard 2 Prototype is something I have been seeking for quite some time ;).

Moiboi

You could activate that menu in one of the demos(I forget exactly which one it was) by simply changing the debug value to 1 in a txt file present on the disc. I remember playing with it when I first got the demo.

Before reading your posts, I seriously thought this beta was already leaked.

I know warez talk is looked down here, but a friend of mine managed to find, supposedly, a beta of this game via some warez source, but he wasn't able to fully verify if it was the actual beta.

I was also thinking if it was the actual true beta much more info would be known about it, but I also looked at it like Sonic Adventure where it is said a beta is floating around but not much is known of it.

Perhaps there are versions floating out there labeled 1.5 but aren't the true 1.5 you are talking about?

Yep, thats what often happens. There are a few Resident Evil 2 betas floating around, but none of 1.5 itself

Hmmm how can you change a debug value in a demo on a CDrom ? when ROM = Read Only Memory.

Borman: Yeah, of course there are betas of Resident Evil 2, but well the betas we think of , does also exist but some of them are guarded by clauses, other are just a nono. Yeah the obscure is sometimes more occult, than obscure ;)

By ripping the GCM image and changing it with a hex editor, though I'm not sure that would work, there may be some sort of checksum. Personally I simply altered the file, rebuilt the GCM and streamed that to the NGC.

MottZilla
04-19-2006, 10:36 PM
Ya, streaming is the way to do hat, but the last StarCube loaders will only work with the RE4 demo, and not the RE4 final. I would love to see a beta/prototype of that RE2 before they scrapped it and started over. That looked awesome.

at the start of your article it mentions other finds in past resident evil titles, has anything else of interest similar to this been found before?

Just various items, scrapped rooms..however nothing to this extent if I recall correctly. Infact when I wrote that I had no idea I was going to find these things heh.

Nice find.
It would be cool if you found a Mach Speed effect in there.(^_^)
Leon popping heads at break-neck speed would be highly amusing.

If we are lucky, Ubisoft may leave the leftovers from earlier versions when the PC version is released, meaning it can be hacked back in. If that happeneds, we may be able to find even more hidden stuff that would take too long to find on the GCN and PS2 versions.
