View Full Version : Sega Saturn and stuff...

I've been heavily addicted into the Dreamcast lately.... it's like an odd obsession.. (of course.. the DC does have quite a few good games anyways! and the Multiplayer with friends on a LOT of games makes it a killer system!)
I originally started to collect for the Sega Saturn... got up to about 30 titles (haha, I know) and quit... sold off the collection, er... handful rather... and spent it on DC stuff.
Anyone here think the Saturn is worth to bother with today?
I mean... price wise and gameplay wise?
The games I had... weren't all that great... probably the best title I had was D2... Skeleton Warrior and Grid Runner was cool... but the 3 out of the 30 or so I had was about the only ones I enjoyed. (course... quite a few were crappy sports and others the basic overplayed games such as Viruta Cop and Virtua Fighter)
I've only got about 50ish titles to get for the Dreamcast... (I can't wait... I'm almost done! and even then I wont actually be done as there is a ton of other stuff for the DC I still want... but.. ) does anyone think it's worthwhile to go backwards and get a Saturn collection going? I was on eBay but didn't seem to find any super big lots of collections or games.. the most I seen I think was 21 games in one lot. I'd like to get a lot with 150ish games... a huge bump ;)
(and maybe some games I would truly enjoy)
And... on the other note... what are about 20 games you guys would recommend on the Saturn? (if 20 can't be thought of then that tells me the system isn't worth messing with since it does have 246 released games, heh)
Thanks :)

The Saturn does indeed kick muchos ass.
Depends what type of games your into really. If you like 2D scrolly shooters, the Saturn is the system to get. 20 good games, eh? Well for starters there's -
NiGHTs into Dreams / Xmas NiGHTS
Panzer Dragoon/Zwei/Saga
Burning Rangers
And for 2d shooters -
Radiant Silvergun
Battle Garegga
Shokyrugurentai
Daikatana Twinbee Yahoo!
Sexy Parodius
Strikers 1945 / S1945 pt 2
Kingdom Grandprix
Thunderforce 5
Thunderforce Gold pack
Gradius Deluxue
Darius Gaiden
Dodonpatchi
And thats all I can think of for the mo. The Saturn is a quality machine. :smt023

Saturns my fav system! :smt043
In my situation it's some sort of obsession from my earlier youth, when I was 9 years old I read about the upcoming Saturn in a games mag (may 1995), I was totally blown away and really wanted one... sadly that never happened and I got out of console gaming for 6 years... when I got back in I got a Saturn ASAP and I just keep buying games :)
After 1.5 years I got about 50 games and 3 systems (one japanese), granted not all games are good but I enjoy the hunt as there's almost no Saturn games to be found in my country.
Anyhow, sorry for the rambling, here's my list of recommended (and not terribly rare) games:
-Street Fighter Alpha 2 / Zero 2 - great 2D beat em up
-Sonic Jam - must have, all the MD Sonic games in 1 + extras
-Tempest 2000 - simple yet addictive game with kickass techo
-Sega Rally - rally game with *very* good gameplay and nice gfx
-Galactic Attack/Layer Section - good 2D shmup, also PAL/US
released
-Baku Baku - extremely fun puzzle game!
-Bust-a-move 2 - same as above
-Assault Suit Leynos - good Contra-style game, JPN only though
-Rayman - good platformer (I know, I keep raving about this :p)
And above all: NiGHTS! Best game ever imho :smt040
Regarding the not-so-easy-to-find games:
-Dragon Force: strategical RPG, supposedly takes *looong* time to
finish
-Panzer Dragoon Saga - according to some the best RPG ever, but
very pricey
-Xmen VS SF - innovative fighting game with amazing 2D graphics
and no loading times
-Radiant Silvergun - sadly I only have the "backup" *AHEM* but it
rocks! Very expensive though.
-Saturn Bomberman - cant beat em 10 player bomberman game :)

What ever you do don't pass on the Saturn. It is one of the best if not THE best gaming console out there. I love it more than the Dreamcast !! The Saturn is the only 2D gamers choice (Neo Geo being the second but what happens if you're not such a Fighting fan :P) The amount of classics of the system out numbers any other system I'd say. Not to mention some of the 3D games are very nice too. Stuff like Panzer Dragoon, Last Bronx, Virtua Fighter 2, Burning Rangers, Sonic R, Sega Rally, Bulk Slash, Daytona (looks poo but great to play) and many others. Some of the very early 2D stuff stil looks great now such as Clockwork Night 2, Magical Night Ray Earth, Astel and the Parodius games. Oh, and let's not forget the overwelming amount of 2D shooters and fighting games for it.
Yep, the Saturn is one hellof a beast that was sadly overlooked in the west.

I love me Saturn. :smt033
I love Batsugun and Shienryu and Soukyugurentai, too... and my complete mini-collection of all of Konami's Parodius games (hi-la-ri-ous!)... and Wipeout XL and Daytona USA CCE and even Syutokoh Battle '97 (a very good predecessor of the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series on DC)... and on what other system do you get to play Virtua Fighter Kids? Mini-bodies and balloon-heads with anime eyes (did I say hi-la-ri-ous?) ... Pandemonium is great... Panzer Dragoon Zwei is simply fantastic, that's one of the Saturn games you totally forget it only does like 320x240 onscreen resolution :smt040 ... there are others... so many... I forget them all... I probably have about 150 games or so, evenly split into originals (both US and Japanese) and backups... Hadn't it been for the Saturn, I never would have been prepared to go Dreamcast :) For me, the two are a family :)

Legend of Oasis and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. Yeah, the last one was on PS1 as well but I had an easier time finding the Saturn version when I was looking.

Oh yes, the Satyrn is worth many bothers. :smt023
I must say next to the PC Engine, the Saturn is my favorite platform.
It is very hard to come up with a small list of games, but here it goes:
Guardian Heroes – A great multiplayer/action game. Very good graphics, great characters and cool music. Another required game every Saturn fan should have in their collection.
Super Puzzle Fighter II X – A very fun puzzle game. If you love puzzle games, you owe it to your self to own this game.
Pocket Fighter – A very cool fighting game, with SD versions of all your favorite Capcom fighters.
Cotton 2 – A very fun shooter. Cotton is definitely one of my favorite vg personalities.
Kaitei Daisensou (In The Hunt) – As fun as the arcade version. A great submarine shooter, very challenging.
Burning Rangers – A very fun action game courtesy of Sonic Team.
Nights into dreams... – The one game every Saturn lover should own. Enough said…
The Super Dimension Fortress Macross – A very good animation shooter. If you are a fan of Macross, you must own this game.
Bomberman SS – Bomberman, Bomberman, Bomberman….Possibly the best version (multiplayer at least) of this classic action game.
Metal Slug – One of the best side scrollers to come out in years. This version is great, you won’t be disappointed if you are a fan of the arcade/AES versions.
Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story II - A very fun action game. Even none Gundam fans will enjoy this title.
Soukyugurentai – A very challenging a overhead shooter. This game also works with the Saturn Flight Stick.
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter – One of the best fighting games on the Saturn. This version doesn’t leave anything out and even adds an interesting fighter.
Dungeons & Dragons Collection – 2 very fun hack & slash games.
Dragon Force – A very good strategy game, with a great story and cool character designs.
Gunbird – Another great shooter. Filled with fun levels and loads of character.
Waku Waku 7 – A very fun and weird fighting game. Bonus Kun gives it 5 Stars.
Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromar (Psychic Killer Taromaru) – This game (I would ove to find one for sale) is one of the best looking Saturn games, and one of the best side scrollers ever made. Very, very hard to find.
TokiMeki Memorial Taisen Pazurudama – Another fun puzzle game. You can’t beat cute girls and puzzles.
The Conveni! – This is a convenience store sim. Yes, don’t laugh, and expect to spend many hours playing this very fun title. (Well maybe it's just me, but check it out).

Anyone have any comments regarding Enemy Zero?
How about the Saturn version of Resident Evil?
Tachikoma
03-23-2004, 06:43 PM
God Enemy Zero is good, but really hard to get into. Imagine the sonar things on Alien's, then remove the screen, so the only way you can tell where the (invisible) aliens are is by the pinging of your "tracker".
Worth picking up!

Like everyone else said the Saturn is a great system. It's just that most of the great games never left Japan so you have to import to get the most out of it.

so far I believe only hardware I haven't got are below ones unless there are pachingo and fishing rod controller for Saturn though I haven't seen nor heard about them.
Derby Skeleton
Keyboard
NetLink
Hitachi Hi-Navi
Hitachi VCD card
PAL Saturn VCD card
that's about it for official hardware. of course there are tons more for 3rd party that I haven't got but that's different story.

dj898, still dont have a Netlink? They shouldn't be too hard to find in the States, last summer when I was in Michigan I bought mine (unboxed but with all manuals + keyboard converter) for $20... and they had another one too. I'll be back there this summer, if you want I can have a look for you.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Grandia, Dead or Alive, and Virtual-On. The PS1 ports of Grandia and DOA were inferior to the Saturn versions (which proves that the Saturn IS more powerful than the PS1), and Virtual-On with the twin-sticks AND Netlink play was unbelievable.
And since I'm a shooter nut, I have to mention Capcom Generation 1. It contains 1943, which to me this game, along with R-Type, are the 2 best shooters ever from the 1980s.

I remember playing Dead Or Alive on the PlayStation and thinking "WTF" The Saturn version is so solid looking with beautiful hi-rez images while the PSX version is all bendy with not a straight line in sight like most 3D games on the system :smt019 It did have better lighting than the Saturn though.

Dead or Alive, and Virtual-On.
I have both but I didnt particularly adore any of them... perhaps because I suck at VO (and dont have the sticks) and as far as beat em ups are concerned I prefer the Street Fighter games :smt043
(however, SF cant beat the "bouncing breasts" option in the DOA option screen :smt033 )

I'm a huge Saturn fan, but ignorant fanboy crap like this is not needed. 2D and 3D capabilities are different things, and when you start talking about ports, you open up many other variables. Symphony of the Night looked better on the PS, yet this is not solid evidence that the PS did 2D better than the Satrun, as it was just a sloppy port by a third mill dev team.

well it does not 'prove' it as such no... what I do find is more illustrative is that Treasure cancelled a PS1 port of Radiant Silvergun despite the huge demand :smt017
And by the way, there's some guy on Usenet who did quite a lot of Saturn vs PS1 comparisons on his website, I can dig up the URL if anyone's interested.
Moreover, am I the only one being annoyed by the frequent appearance of someone named "Guest" who comes in and flames people?

You got a source on this? A buddy of mine that worked for Activision Japan said they were in the process to buy the rights to reprogram it for the Playstation. They bailed out b/c Treasure wanted "way too much money" for it.

I am guest. As I didn't post "You suck" or anything that brainless, I don't think I flamed the guy. I apologize for being rude, I'm just tired of seeing stuff like he posted. And no one calls him on it, which is even worse. If someone said the DC was more powerful than the PS2, it wouldn't make you less of a Sega fan to point out that it may be able to do textures better, but it overall is probably less powerful. I am not even debating whether the Saturn is more powerful than the PS, but to compare one game to its port than declare it as proof of anything is silly. Now that I am off on the wrong foot, it's nice to finally speak to you as I've lurked for a long time.

Ah, well I read it in various sources but it wasnt backed up by anything... perhaps you're right... but that still leaves the question why Treasure didnt program it themselves? Didnt they do some PSX games before?

I don't have any other info on it than that. I'm still in contact with the guy (he's still working where I used to work) so I'll drop it by him and see what he says. The reason Activision passed on it is b/c they said they wouldn't sell more than 40,000 in the states, and they wouldn't make their money back.
I suppose it's very possible Treasure was working on a JPN PS1 release at the same time though. Kind of an interesting story.
On a simliar not, Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru was scheduled for the Playstation at one point, and got cut.

My Saturn experience is sortof limited, as I'm just getting started, but I have a few games to toss in:
Donpachi/DoDonpachi - freaking crazy vertical shooters, hard as hell but super rewarding when you finally beat stage 1 without dying. ^__^
Twinbee Deluxe Pack - It may look cutesy, but it's a lot of fun, plus it contains the original Detana! Twinbee and Twinbee Yahoo!
Nightwarriors/Darkstalkers/Vampire Hunter/Vampire Savior/whatever - Capcom's awesome fighting game using various monsters and such. Downright hilarious and offers the same depth as the Street Fighter series (has mostly the same moves too - this could be a plus or a minus, depending on how you look at it)
Everyone's said Panzer Dragoon, no need to mention it again, I assume :smt019
Dead Or Alive - Despite gravity-defying jubblies, this is actually a fairly fun and deep fighter
Dungeons And Dragons Collection - Capcom's fantastic side-scrolling dungeon slasher. Yes, it's spendy, and I only have the *cough* Backup *cough*....
:axe: (piracy police in action)
but if you can track it down, it's well worth it.
And that's about all for right now. Good luck! :smt040
