What made you buy a faulty psx?

...After all there's thousands of good ones out there!

Under the impression it was in working order.

Is there any tests I can run, or see of maybe it is something else other then the laser?

If you have a spare PSX lying around. First swap the power cable to the laser unit. If that doesn't work, then just try the other laser unit on the system. Make sure the door switch is down because the unit does not spin up to read a CD, it just shoots a laser. So, put in a CD and push down the door switch to see if it spins up.
