View Full Version : Server to be shut down

ASSEMbler
01-03-2006, 12:35 PM
Thanks to the person I paid to do the site using bootlegs, the site has to be shut down in 24 hours unless I buy an expensive Vbulletin license.

The options are: Buy the $160 license.
Start a new PHPBB board (lose posts)

I'm not too hot on Vbulletin, and am looking into a way of converting it all to phpbb, but it might not be possible with this version.

Thoughts are welcome.

In accordance with the DMCA, we hereby inform you that your web server that hosts the domain http://assemblergames.com (http://../) has been or within the next 24 hours will be, disabled to the extent necessary to comply with the DMCA.

Update:

I'd move to have yakumo be the collecting point. Jelsoft accepts paypal.

I'd just have yakumo purchase it, filling in the site's info and what not.

That is, if he doesn't mind.

Lst resort, I will eat the fees, but I was hoping for some community
support on this issue. Ok, no worries. I'll pay Jelsoft once all the paypal payments come through. Ok, my paypal account is mes1975(AT)poppy.ocn.ne.jp of course replace the (AT) with @ Oh and PLEASE MARK THE PAYMENT AS "ASSEMBLER FUND"
Kev can you also mail me the details that I'd have to fill in to the same mail address above.

can't someone else here (that we all trust, like some moderator) with a paypal collect the money and then transfer it to you assembler?

Holly shit !! I was just looking at the site before. This is really bad news !! We ALL need to throw in 5 dollars (it's nothing anyway !) we all get something out of this board sop we should ALL put something in to getting it back up and running !!

I'd be more than happy to let people use my Paypal account but how will I send money to ASSEMbler if he has no paypal account? I'm not doing a bank transfer. maybe I could send Travellers cheques or postal order. Anyway, we need to get something sorted.

Yakumo

I'd throw in $5, as this site is a virtual goldmine of information on new and old development systems.

Can't you set up a donation system through Paypal or Amazon?

What would be ideal would be to take funds via paypal.
Those who can only mail money can send it to me via mail.

We'll use the mail money towards setting up a dedicated FTP
and irc server or setting up the first run of t-shirts.
Those who sent by mail would get the amount they sent deducted from the shirt.

What you think?

Guys, thanks so much for all the donations !!! We are doing really well !!! I don't want to post how much we have so far so I'll leavethat to our main guy to post. I did get a paypal payment from someone who I won't mention here which says the following.

"This eCheck payment will remain "Uncleared" until the funds clear from the sender's account, which usually takes 3-4 business days. If you are shipping an item, please do not ship your item until the funds clear into your PayPal account. You will be notified by email when the funds clear into your PayPal balance."

Does this mean I have the $20 or not? I'm not sure if I should add it to the total. From reading the message it seems not. Any how, thanks so much EVERYONE for the donations. I've got all mail addresses of people who donated just in case something happens to ASSEMbler's PM data. Still time to add more donations!

A few quesitons

-Does $160 buy the license forever?
-Any monthly fee?
-Will you get control of the database again? (IE -- be able to make changes you want to?)

While there's no easy converter for PHPBB (did you check phpbb.com forums -- those guys know everything) it's probably not hard to salvage quite a bit of it. However, I'm sure it will take a lot of time.

You have other options. You can pay for the VBulletin license, and take daily backups of the DB, all the while figuring out how to convert it to PHPBB. If it's a MySQL database, it shouldn't be that hard. Posts would be easy. Poll's and other stuff might be tricky though.

It's forever, no way I am getting suckered into their "yearly" package.

I've been experimenting, so far, it keeps corrupting, it seems the php has some custom header I have to deal with.

I'm sure if I do a clean install of vbulletin, without all he hack shit that keeps fucking up, it'll be fine for now.

Link 2 (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=316543&highlight=convert+vbulletin)

It seems possible, but round-about. There's an entire forum at phpbb.com talking about converting. I'm sure there's some people here that aren't too bad with MySQL either that wouldn't mind helping.

Yakumo a echeack is just like a normal check as in it will take a few days to clear. So I doubt that you will have that money until it does. eCheacks are when people with paypal dont have credit cards and its linked to their bank account. Payment is not instant as it would be via a credit card. I had mine set up that way for a time. I didnt know if you knew that or not so I figured I would tell you, sorry if you already did. Good luck on getting it all worked out.

Its also when you have money in your Paypal Account, but choose to use the funds in your Bank acc. Really anoying when that happens..

Kevin,

I'm going to send it to your PO Box from which you sent me some hardware from last year. Do you still use that PO BOx or do you use a different one?

Let me know by 5:30pm our time by saying yes or no, so that I can send the donation out tonight. You haven't replied to my PM yet.

It's even more inspiring to see so many relatively unknown faces donating, it makes you realise how well received ASSEMbler really is.

Maybe with any extra funds, as well as paying for the vBulletin license, Kev can pay for a few years' of further updates from Jelsoft, any maybe have a few other nice things on the site.

Hope it's all sorted in time!

i dunno what the current situation is (ill admit to not reading all 6 pages) but if push comes to shove, I legally own my vBulletin and will gladly create a forum (with all necessary subforums) for Assembler. Hell, ill host the whole site haha. ^_^

my main email and msn email is the one registered to this account, so if you do want to do anything (even if its only for a few days or w/e) let me know ^_^.

It means that it will take about a week to clear the bank. You should have the money by then.

As soon as yakumo wakes up we'll find out how much we raised.
He's probably already ordered the license.

Anything extra we'll use for either T-shirts or something special.

It would be nice to hire someone so we have a pro frontpage like
gamespot, or better yet, a trade interface sort of like the old
gametz site.

Just donated. Would have done so sooner, but I just saw the thread.

ASSEMbler: Definitely make sure to respond to the DMCA notification as soon as you have the license. Also, if they are trying to get you to pay significant penalties and you can track down the person whom you paid to do the website (name and address are typically all you need to give proper notification), you should consider taking legal action. Alternatively, if this person has a design business, you may be able to forego any penalties by alerting the copyright holder to a potential "bigger fish".

What does this mean for www.rollingbomber.com (http://www.rollingbomber.com) ? Even though it's using phpbb would they shut that down too?

Sent $8.50 via paypal to yakumo. I'll still send an extra $20 when i send you that money order.

That is a really freaking bizarre website.

You sortof answered your own question, though - it's using phpbb, which is free. We were on the vBulletin software, which is NOT free. The issue here is that our copy of vBulletin powering the site was apparently pirated - yet another nice present left by the fellow who set the new site up.

I just sent $10
But frankly, rather than being taken in hostage by a proprietary program from which you can't export messages easily, I'd rather have someone spend time to do a conversion of messages and switch to say, phpBB or something free.
In any case, please don't lose the existing message base (it has been lost already and that was a shame IHMO).

It's just this site that has to go offline.

I don't care for Vbb but the posts are important.

Putting the money in an account soundslike a good idea.

We can save it, and if we do raffles or auction, I can build up money
to buy unreleased games for us to release as well.
(just a passing thought)
