What's the best modchip for you?

I think seeing http://www.xbox-scene.com/modchips4_table.htm that's the Xecuter3 but i'm not sure.

Where can i find the X3 os build 3029 ?

I use them for everything from file servers, web servers, media centers, and anything else you could possibly do with them. The only time i would really need a mod chip is if i wanted to boot one without a DVD drive, and in that case it's just easier to reflash it.

What are you using, out of curiousity? I just used the UDE2 package with a modified dualboot.xbe (I hate having a different dashboard loaded up with the eject button). I tried setting up the softmod myself, and probably could now, but I kept getting frustrated so I gave it up.

Uh... he he... it's complicated, but i'm using a "Custom" job. It's similar to the first UDE, but using one of the flaws that hasn't made it into the scene yet. I was going to release it if microsoft ever tried to block the UDE2, but there doesn't seem to be much of a point now as they both acheve the same ends. My first box (my main system) is running off of this funky custom softmod that i don't remember how i made, so i'm hesitant to play with any of the files. As for getting the original dash to run, i just hex edited the original dash's xbe to look for the font files under a different name. So far, so good, it's been stable for about 2 years.

The xbox in my car is probably the most interesting, as i hacked together one of the AV cables from a display kiosk so it powers up when i start my car. Then it autoboots into xbox media center and i use a wireless controller to change the song. The 7 in display in the back seat doesn't hurt... how many people have had a halo tournament in the back seat of their car?

I just recomend the UDE2, as it's painfully simple.

I've considered buying another Xbox to TSOP, but other than the BIOS loading up at startup (and having that spiffy startup screen with the Xecuter 2 BIOS) I don't really see a point anymore. I used to be paranoid about Microsoft overwriting my dashboard files and whatnot, but I figure they have given it up by now. I thought UDE2 had some type of "protection" against that, anyway.

In case you can't tell, I'm not very knowledgable with this type of thing. I think I've been doing fairly well since I've avoided a signup at Xbox-Scene. I just read a shitload of tutorials/"how this works" documentation.

I would have to agree with you there. I bought a Xenium before X3 came out and I love mine, but it doesn't seem to have as many features as the X3 OS. I also see modchips as a "safety net". If something ever goes wrong with a tsop, eeprom, HD, etc., a modchip gives you the ability to circumvent/fix the problem quite easily in most cases. Softmods are pretty slick nowadays though.

With xbox units going to be worth a dime a dozen, I think mod chips will be very important so that people can modify them into more useful things, like NAS or linux boxes.

I hate how the word "mod" connotes a negative intention these days.

Every Xbox owner should try "Xbox Media Center" software, a.k.a. XBMC . It's amazing! (and thank god someone is doing a PS2 version called myPS2)

If money is not an issue, I've heard very good things about the Xecuter 3. There's also a wierd front-panel thing with an LCD screen and USB ports you can buy. I think they're hideous, but what you do with your hardware is your business.

X3 is by far the best out at the moment but also the most expensive. Softmods will also do the job like the others mentioned. It just depends on your preferences.

If your not doing any Dev work or wanting all the fancy bling, any chip will do really. If you do want to do either of those two things get a Smart XX with 4 MB flash or an Xcuter 3.

Basically if you get a chip with 512 Mb flash you can do anything short of an LCD display.

I've always been more of a chip guy myself, I am still able to use live with a 250 gig HD installed and I'm afraid if I used a soft mod at some point it could/would get patched. Lots of people love softmods though.

Had very good results with Chameleon chip on Xbox 1.1 and 1.4.

X3 is ok, once I fixed it. It had cold soldering pin (no connection), so I had to solder bypass wire.

I modded friends 1.6 with X2.6 - very good budget choice.

On the other hand, one coworker got a Xenium ICE dying on him about a year after install for no obvious reasons.

PS: for Xbox 1.0-1.5 TSOP reflashing is very simple, it's easier then PCB rework for 1.6, and no need for expensive modchip.

I have stuck with the Xecuter series. X3's are my favorite. Out of 400+ installs only 2 chips failed, but I knew better and was totally at fault. Carpet + Dry air + Modchip = Stupid mistake!
