Hi all, what can anyone tell me about the original unreleased version of Resident evil for the gbc? I know Capcom comissioned a UK developer to do the gbc port (cant recall who though) who developed a compleated or as near as dammit compleate version which Capcon canned at the very last minute claiming it wasnt scarey enough or some such guff, then procced to release Resident evil gaiden on the gbc instead!! Whats the full story on this? I remember it looked really good for a gbc game, is it availble out 'there' anywhere? Tia.

Who was the developer? Maybe they still have the code laying around?

Capcom has the funny tendancy to want to protect the Resident Evil franchise. The only way the code survived is if one of the developers stole a copy and took it home, as i'm sure capcom demanded that the source was given to them when the project was complete. Capcom gets really pissed off when unreleased resident evil leaks out, just look at RE 1.5. Capcom has an unofficial bounty out there for whoever has the leaked copy, and there'll be hell to pay when they find who leaked it (yes, 1.5 is in a private collector's hands. This has been proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt).

That being said, i really wish this had come out as it looks pretty cool. But don't expect a leaked copy to be released, it doesn't seem as if there were any review copies sent out.

yeah, one really interesting GBC game. I saw nice screenshots in a game magazine. Does the game use the 52 color mode of the GBC?

Not to throw this thread too off-topic, but it would be nice if they would release the fucking thing as part of a "Collector's Package" or something. I'm not going to beg you for the identity either, as I can see how the person (people?) in question would want to keep that hidden.

GBC Resident Evil looked pretty nice. I've heard from a few people that it played fairly well, too. Wasn't it at some show at one point?

I've got a magazine with an article about this game in it. I'll try to find it and scan it for you when I get back home for Christmas break.

Ace, Not sure what you know but at one time a Capcom employee had it and was prepared to make a copy for someone in the community. Is this what you were referring to?

I have a little blurb about it in an old EGM, if what you have is something different I can show you guys this as well.

From IGN:

"A port of the original PlayStation One game, Resident Evil was eventually cancelled because of technical issues. HotGen Studios and Capcom would later create an original Game Boy Color Resident Evil title as a nod to pocket fans. (See Resident Evil Gaiden.)"

That's funny because I read that the framerate was pretty shocking at points and the number of monsters on screen at any one time was limited to 2? This meant a lot of the tension was lost. Even the "boss" characters were reduced in size. This was in previews in Computer and Videogames magazine back in the day, though I don't own them now. Or was it... I forget the name now, but it only saw 10-12 issues before it folded, and it was during the PSX/Saturn/N64 era. I want to say Maximum, but something about the name doesn't sound right.

Anyway, the whole speed issue was the nail in the coffin.

Maybe the fact that they played an unreleased game altered their opinion of the game? http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Personally, I can't say how nice it was, since I never had the chance to play it.

I played that game on a trade show 7 years ago and it was looking nice for a CGB game :)

I had nearly forgotten all about this.
It is really one of the main reasons that I bought a gbc and after watching that video I really wish I had gotten a chance to atleast see it run in person. The video was very nice though.

It really does look rather tasty, though I wonder how good it would have actually played.

I was part of the development team on RE GBC and I have to say that we got every single puzzle, location & cut screen into the game.

For a GBC game at the time it was pretty awsome! Then, as everyone knows, it got canned!!! :crying:

Wow are you really part of the team!!!

Let me just say that I'm pretty sure that a very large number of the member on this board is famillar with the work on that game. Let me be the first to say that you guys did an amazing job, and that its tragic that this game didn't come out.

You wouldn't happen to have any thing related to the game's development lying around (videos, technical documents, concept art, box art, instruction manual art etc.) thats not already out there?

It would be really cool to see the art prepped for this release as if I'm not mistaken it was close to completion.

Do you mind if I also ask a few questions?

How close would you say the game was to release?

Are there any know existing copies or roms of any versions of the game that you know of?

What exactly was the reason that development was shut down ?

Id wait on asking questions until you actually know everything about the game, especially some of the new materials released by Dot50cal's site in the past year ;)

Hi All,

I may have some odds & ends lying on a hard drive somewhere so if I get chance I'll have a look see. I'm working abroad on a DS/Wii project at the moment so it'll not be till I get home.

When it got canned it was complete apart from bug fixes. I heard, wether it's true or not, that it was canned on the orders of the guy that created RE. He didn't think the GBC was worthy of his creation!!!

If anyone out there has a copy of the rom, I'd be over the moon for a copy as that's one thing I don't have.

I would also like a copy of the videos that are mentioned earlier in the thread as the links to them don't want to work for me.

When I get five mins I'll see if I can remember anything from those days (It was 8 years ago!!)

Best Regards
Pete

Here are some videos

Chris Gameplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xna8n8bKcRs)

Off the Gameboy Colour Screen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNWLxOUvdeM)

Jill in Labs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKkwwmhUCBE)

I know no one has a copy of the rom here and that the RE community would kill to see it.

But, if I remeber correctly a team member did have it and was close to leaking it, but then negotiations fell through or something.

Are you still in contact with anyone from the team?

Perhaps you could call some of them up and ask if they might have a copy as I know some did.

It would mean a ton to everywhere I'm sure if you were successful

Jeez, that brings back some memories!!!!!!

As far as the team's concerned, I'm actually working with them all here! There was 1 lead programmer, an artist and me!!! ;-)

Do you think you could ask them about the game? Or if they have any stuff they could share such as pics, etc? I hear there was box art and everything already made. And if your working with one the artist perhaps he might be able to share some stuff

Maybe one of them even have a copy of the rom:love:?

Again I know the community would be in crazy debt to you.
But, of course don't worry about it if you can't. Its cool that your talking to us and all.

Damn, though it's very simplified graphically, it feels really like a RE game. And these videos are damnly fluid... I really would like to play it sometime ! This is quite a good port, i think, way more interesting than RE DS which came back after the damn great RE 1 remake... This whole cartoon redesigning for GBC is very cool i think.
