A lot of that stuff was posted in an old Dorimaga or other DC mag in Japan. Yakumo and I had a chat about it on the old board.

They weren't on "display" though, so I assume those are shots from a TGS. I saw two things on display that aren't listed above (if memory serves). An ISDN adaptor, as ISDN was pretty big in Japan, and an MP3 player / VMU (this was a while ago though).

EDIT: You do have the Mp3 player up there. :)

And for the record, the Set Top Box was going to be a PCI card if I recall... never saw it though. Cool stuff.

Anyways, Sega always has the coolest stuff on display at game shows. The last TGS they had original Phantasy Star character designs... complete with artist notes scribbled on them. Very cool, and like an idiot, I didn't take a picture... or more to the point, break the case and steal them :(

hmm any onc notice how the xbox pad is amazingly similar to the dc concept pad? i allways figured the dc pad to be a natural evolution from the saturn nights pad - the shape etc just sems like it evolved from it and seeing a nights pad with a vmu slapped on confirmed my suspicion! :smt019

No, the setop box was one thing, the PCI card was another one.
The PCI card would give you the chance to play DC games on the PC, while the setop box would be like a Tivo + DC.

PD

If you take a look at the picture full of concept pads you'll notice a hacked up NiGHTS pad there with what looks like a VMU stuck in it. I have some of those pics on my site but they are different. I loved the pad pictures. Never seen them before.

If you look at a saturn analog, it comes apart in two easy pieces for an inverface cable swap. My guess is they decided to go with an all new pad, but designed the saturn analog to be changed over to katana.

I have never seen those controller pictures either...but while we're talking about the saturn pad...wasn't the slot on the Saturn pad for a periphreal for the sequel to nights...entitled AIR nights...or something...haven't we discussed this before...deja vu....

Edit: Oh...and speaking of this...i believe the story is that sega worked on two projects to succeed saturn...Katana...which turned into dreamcast, developed by SOJ and Black Belt based on Voodoo2 technology....made by SOA...Have we ever seen any prototypes of Blackbelt?

!!! Why can't you tell! !!!

I think that considering that most people here have an interest in Dreamcast, that most of us would be REALLY interested in hearing about it...after all...Black Belt is part of the DC's History...and everyone loves Dreamcast...

Talking about Proto pics, can someone make hi quality scans of that article that has all concept designs of the Playstation system, controller and logo? (from the very first proto till the final product)

I remember someone posting in on the older board, but it was just webcam pics. I'm interested to read the article and see the pics as well.

I think it was a Next Gen mag.

Somethings coming back to me now.

I remember wisperings of the DC innards being put into set top boxes (Sky Digital I think) to act as the games side of the system. But nothing really happened. This would have been in the UK too.

I`m going to try and find some articles on it later.

The box does look a bit like one of the Sky Digi boxes too.

Sorry, pic in the wrong place.

(and as the text says "Dreamcast 2" it's a pretty obvious mistake ;o)

Pace’s Home Gateways with integrated Games

Pace will also demonstrate digital home gateway boxes with integrated games, including games from Sega. The Sega games demonstration features 3D graphics, digital-quality sound and full-motion video on Pace’s home gateway with an integrated hard disk drives (HDD). The HDD enables consumers to play console quality games online, while at the same time using the latest PVR technology to ‘timeshift’ TV. The HDD - currently 40 gigabytes- acts as a games jukebox and is used for storing games, downloadable delivery, and pay-per-play or pay-for-time revenue generation opportunities.

not the slot, there's a release for the entire cable.

That's what I meant, the slot that you get when you unplug the cable from the analog pad...oh yeah....

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS ANY INTEREST IN BLACK BELT? :smt017

I am extremely intrested in the Blackbelt and would love to see some information on this rare prototype finally surface. From what I have heard it used 3dfx graphics, that's all I know for definite on the system apart from the fact it was being researched and developed at SoA instead of SoJ.

Remember right after the announcement of the discontinuation of DC by Sega, they licensed the DC hardware to a company called PACE to release a set-top box?

Supposingly it's a Tivo/DC hybrid, and you will be able to download DC games via broadband directly to the set-top box.

Since PACE is a company based in England, I believe that's why the proto set-top box pic above has a European DC pad connected to it.

Does anyone knows what happened to the company PACE?

PACE are I think the biggest set top box\digi box makers in the UK.

Still going strong (probably a lot better than Sega lol)
