View Full Version : The Revolution Really Is In The Controller

Looks like an online magazine site seems to think they have the inside scoop on the Nintnedo Revolution controller. Sounds interesting, and I sure hadn’t thought of this, yet somehow if this is all the controller is, I would feel a bit let down. Quote from Computer Games Magazine:

It's revolutionary in the same two senses that controller rumble is/was revolutionary: first, it's kind of actually not a huge deal, but controllers will eventually all have it because it is pretty neat; and second, it involves revolving. Simply, the Revolution controller will provide resistance to being tilted. No doubt this is done by some application of a tilt sensor such as the one in WarioWare: Twisted combined with rumble technology.

After all, rumble is just done by some off-balance widgets inside the controller spinning really fast. If they were balanced, they could provide enough rotational inertia— the same thing that makes bikes and motorcycles harder to tilt the faster they're going— to perform this trick.

The "could" is why Nintendo hasn't come out with it yet. Yeah, they say they don't want it to be copied, which is valid because I'm sure it will be, just not anytime soon. What's really happening is Nintendo is trying to make this work with wireless controllers, finding the optimal tradeoff between spinning the widgets fast enough to produce a good, strong effect and keeping the controller from eating batteries too quickly. Oh, and it has to be cheap and reliable, too

Ah-ha!

That's what I was saying in the very beginning, true gyroscopic force feedback.

Too bad, because the touchscreen would have been rocking.

Ugh, I just want something that works well, and isn't a gimick. Then again, I just want to see the damn thing.

touch screen wouldn't be revolutionning, they already made it for DS, so...

Anyway, if this is true ( 'cause this could be rumors), i wouldn't be sad. Just imagine this in a driving game! or imagine a sonic game with that; loops and speed! :D i'd like to see games that is controlled with the help of this thing though. and will this only affect the controller itself, or the analog sticks as such?

sounds very unrevolutionary....regardless of whether or not it's been done before. I could have figured this out just by watching 5 year old play games for 5 minutes. I never liked those fools that tilted their controllers like it did anything.

but now it's the game that tilts you!

If this is true, then Sega is required to give us a new Monkey Ball game. :D

I think they meant a gyroscopic force feedback, not a gyro controller, like the sidewinder. Although, I wonder how well it may work.

God please no :smt067

A little bit off-topic, but has anyone tried out Wario Ware: Twisted?

:D

Yeah. It's not that off-topic, as it goes along with the gyro category, which is being discussed.

I think Nintendo is going to suffer if they keep making these gimmicky controllers and such. I hope they still have a D pad instead of tilting your controller to move, as that will be uncomfortable and probably wouldnt work right. I would HATE to have to tilt my controller forward to move straight in an FPS or something.

well what good fps does nintendo have to mess up? Metroid Prime already has the worst control scheme ever in the history of gaming...

i forgot about that. I had the 2nd one on GC and it's very goldeneye like and those controls actually feel great. I just hate metroid primes lameness.

Metrioid prime feels fine...

And yes, i have WW:Twisted, it is a bit of fun, though i find the original more fun for whatever reason

the only thing i hate about metroid prime is that you need to stop walking in order to look up and down. wtf? couldn't they use the ''c'' stick like any other games? i mean, it's cool when a gameplay is special, but not when it's plain stupid.
