Do you remember the box art to the US release of Street Fighter II for the SNES? man, I do. I saw it today. how could I forget that Chun-Li was a man and that Ryu was a pimp :smt043
So I've started this sticky for you all to post those God awful box arts in. I'll make a start with a few of my personal fav's
Checkered Flag - Atari Jaguar
My, if it isn't something taken from the 80's This is well going to push sales.
http://www.atariage.com/Jaguar/boxes/b_CheckeredFlag_front.jpg
Megaman - NES
:smt043 you've got to love the American artists. Only they can change a cute blue hero in to the metal dildoman :smt043

Street Fighter II - SNES
Oh my god, Chun-Li is a guy. Sh!t
http://www.davidsclazzic.com/images/SELL/SNES/BOOK/STFIGH2.JPG
Phalanx - SNES
Can somebody please tell me what this old guy has to do with a space shooter?
http://www.gamespy.com/top10/january03/covers/10s.jpg
The Japanese box art was quite nice too.
Well, there you have a few. Come on guys, don't be shy. Show us your box art of horror !!

Are you sure thats the box art from the US mega man? I have it...and though the guy on the cartridge is pretty bad, that isn't him.
I'm looking at the cartridge right now, and the cartridge has a Mega Man logo, and then a picture of a guy in Blue and Gold armor, holding a handgun, on a neon future background...it isn't silver dildo man...
I don't have the box, but I don't think they would put a different character on the box than on the cartridge, in fact, the box usually matches the cartridge art.

Sorry, it's from Megaman 2 not 1. My mistake. I know the box 1 art too. Looks like he's trying to take a dump :smt043
madhatter256, that Suikoden box is a joke. Here's another bit of F:cked up US art work.
Valis - US Genesis
http://www.vgmuseum.com/scans/scans2/valis.jpg
Valis - Japanese Mega Drive
http://www.telenet.co.jp/games/products/old/md/valis-m/valis-m1.jpg
I know which one I'd choose :smt023 That Genesis version looks sod all like the character Yuko from Valis. Looks more like a female version of Arnie.

Sorry to nitpick, Yakumo...but its not the US Megaman 2.
Mega Man 2 has much better art than Mega Man 1...its a guy in a totally blue suit...with a helmet with its visor up...holding a blaster, taking a shot at a guy who appears to be Quickman.
Are you sure Dildoman isn't from a European cartridge?

Haha, I get personally offended when everyone says that old US artwork is SOOO bad. They just changed the art to better appeal to people in the US. Seriously, people with pointy hair and giant ass eyes aren't universally appealing...though its starting to change...
The number of japanese cartoons I see on TV is nuts...

I loved Arow Flash. But I didn't know that the woman was a cyborg like on the Genesis box cover :smt017 I also made a few Arrow Flash midis. They were made about 4 years ago so they sound pretty bland (Only 4 or 5 channels if I remember rightly) to my more recent stuff but still quite good. You can download them from the following links

Here's a sneak preview of a Goemon 2 (Mystical Ninja 2) midi that I'm now working on. Still needs an awful lot done on it. Only the first loop is anywhere near complete and even that is really messy with loads of off key instruments, crap volume control, wrong stereo (last of the worries) and a whole host of timing issues.

That's a dreamcast launch box, the head of promotion or something was using himself as a parody, something about him doing crazy things to please sega fans, an apology of sorts for 32x and such. (far as I know). the capaign box I have (event box) is just a big ass picture of his face like that on the front. funny stuff.
GaijinPunch
06-29-2004, 07:11 PM
That's Yukawa. He eventually became the ex-head of promotions of Sega. You can see him on such greats as the What's Shenmue (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/promo_information.cgi?&base=whatsshenmue) promo, or the much rarer Famitsu What's Shenmue (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/promo_information.cgi?&base=whatsshenmuefamitsu).
His positino was "Senmu". "moto". The full title of What's Shenmue is "What's Shenmue? Search for Yukawa, the ex-Senmu." Kind of a silly pun.
Back to the topic, I think all DC box art for hardware was really lame. The simplicity of a solid color does way more for me than the goofy "high-tech", only one step above Electronik SuperSonik crap.
Personally, I think the UK had the right idea w/ the Blue. Orange is a horrible color for video games covers.

THere are two types of the Yukawa Dreamcast box. THere's the one that I have which has the big picture of him. Then there's another than has many little pictures of him. All the little pictures are taken from the Japanese tV adds that he was in.

:smt033 I'm glad that you liked my midis. Thanks for the link but if you look closely you'll find many of my midis already on that site. They've added many of them to the main sections but many still have not been added such as my Super Aleste midis. Just over at Video Game Music Archive now listening to some very good Castlevania Dracula X midis by Jorge D. Fuentes. His and my midis should be played using Microsoft Midi Synthesizer under GM. I listened to my music on my brothers PC and it sounded total shite. Also tried them on my mum's PC before and they still sounded shite until I changed her midi settings to the Microsoft Midi Synthersizer under GM.

And here we have the very sexy looking Famicom Mini version of Metroid. This packing is far nicer. Plastic box with another mini rendition of the original Metroid box. This is actually from the 3rd set of classics released in Japan which are all now from the disc system.

At least with this comparison people can't say that not everyone likes cute big eyed Japanese art. Just the pure thought and style shows that the west just haven't got a clue.

While I agree that Japanese have have disillusioned themselves that fashionably challenging = good, I don't think the statement holds true. I still think they've should've gone blue. You want something that looks "good", not necessarily different.
Messe Sanno in AKihabara now has an import shop. It's mainly Xbox and PS2 garbage for like 8,000 yen a pop, but they do have some GBA stuff -- namely the NES Classics. Those big ass square boxes just make me laugh. HOw horrible!

Those coloured shapes make the game look more fresh and sharp which is just what Sega wanted Sonic to appear as. The US versions and the European versions just didn't get that fresh image across from the box art.
i must agree that the Us box art cover of sonic cd is really ugly compared (and uncompared :smt043 ) with the european and japanesed version. i heard that every musics where changed in the american version , i heard that hey where really better in the original version. i don't know if its true (because i've never played sonic cd in any other versions than the american one) but i love those we have , i can't imagine something really better than this! :smt083
Nah, the US version of Sonic CD has bloody awful music compared to the Japanese and European versions.

I'm sorry to say but you probably did... the music is (I think) CD-audio in separate tracks, and there's no space on the disc to put on another full set of tracks, and if there was I doubt Sega would bother. To make sure, put the game in your CD player and listen to tracks 2 and up :-)

Yes, it isn't that bad, but the SMT: Nocture box is pretty...Plain. Picture of the main character's face in red, some blood, and the logo. Personally think they should of went with the back for the front and the front for the back.
Edit: Was curious about the Japanese boxart, so here is the two versions of the Japanese version:
http://shop.himeya.com/products/ps2_ou/shin_megami3/shin_megami3.jpg
http://img.gamekult.com/photos/00/00/39/30/ME0000393051_2.jpg
It's the same, but in blue/grey and the logo is in Japanese and in the middle. Personally think the blue version is much better (Looks more in-depth due to the shading), while the grey version also looks somewhat better. Still think the back of the box is better, though.

i actually quite like this boxart, to say the truth. being in a forest of shadow full of vegetation, the with the red sun colored like blood about to disapear, it's dark, you can barely see your hand in front of you and you don't know where you are. it's seems unreal and too real to be true at the same time.the only thing you hear is the wind playing with the leaves of the threes and the crows flying an moaning. it's silencious, though you know you're not alone. mmmm.. :smt045

This poor box can't spell or say anything intelligent, so it relieves it's anger by insulting you. The funny thing is on Ebay, a lot of sellers think the games entire title is HEY PUNK ARE YOU TOFF E NUFF.

Here we see Mega Man being pursued by Santa Claus and two professional wrestlers. Mega Man shows off his marksmanship by shooting above his oppenents head. Also notice he's moved his face shield up, his eyes are closed, and he seems to be trying to both break his foot and fall off the ledge. These are signs of depression.

As for that Megaman box art - the second one is my favorite. EGM described it along the lines of "The winner in a contest where kids with down-syndrome had to draw a space-age ice cream man standing in front of his favorite Disneyland ride".

actually, i love it. It's just a different point of view of the game you wouldn't think of in the first place, a bit like those real mario bros artwork. Freaky/cool stuff. and it make sense; pac man.
I actually like that Pacman art work above. Pretty funny in a way.
It is funny, but it made me mad because I was a huge Atari fanboy back then and weird box art didn't help sales very much. That image was a huge joke in VG magazines at the time, much like NES Mega Man a few years later.

Too cliche'ed. It was good when that style was first done in the 70's, but the close-up of the hero and half of the heroines face in the back. Not to mention it doesn't look like the original artists, nor does it capture the essence of the game.
I found a really, really ugly Sega Saturn add though (japanese one) I will have to post. Not box art, but I think we can make an exception.

Have you heard the Danish joke version of Boten Anna ? that is about a harbour trip in copenhagen, and the boats name is Anna. And yes I know the Swedish version of the song when you translate it correct is The (IRC) Bot Anna, which is not really a bot, but a very lovely chick. But to him she will always be a bot who canīt be banned. But well, I donīt mind his "music", I have heard worse music than his. I'm not complaining about the art itself (still, i prefer the Japanese version), but what was Sony thinking when they approved this?
http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/6873/killzone3.jpg (http://img192.imageshack.us/i/killzone3.jpg/)
The ESRB rating and Guerilla logos are mandatory. Maybe the 3D as well. But why all those?!
There's no reason for a SCEA or PlayStationNetwork logo there (they could go on the back cover), and the other two could easily be printed on the plastic seal instead of the cover.
In the end, an uninspired cover became a terrible one.
At least the US-version's artwork looks rather nice with the black/white-contrast. Here's the great German version:
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/2159/90380028626eae46272e4c7.jpg
The cover art is just the same as Killzone 2's, only with a white frame around that butt-ugly helghast douchebag.
It's not that bad though. Most gamers I know have grown a custom to importing the PEGI-rated version from one of those many cheap UK shops. :)

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/8268/killzone3ps3.gif (http://img707.imageshack.us/i/killzone3ps3.gif/)

That Killzone cover is a good example of how easy it is to make a PS3 cover look like crap by covering it in logos since there's less space.
Bloody hell, that's like the sort of crap home computer games had for artwork in the late 80's.
I actually kinda like the artwork for those games, at least the arcade ports that usually got some new, original artwork for the cover. Here's a good place to start: http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/c64-games (I'm sure a lot of them are Box Arts of Horror)

Why haven't you ever Remixed music and submitted it to something like Dwelling of Duels (if you can play an instrument live)or OCRemix then?
I do it,

http://dwellingofduels.net/dodarchive/11-02-Level_3_Month/04-BONKERS-Gaiares-Shoot-DoD.mp3
And I use an unbelievable amount of Midi all the time. When I have the time I normally write sheet music/sequence Midi first for a song.
I think we'd all be surprised that a lot of Professional music has Instruments/lines of music that are played by Midi. And even how realistic it can all sound.
I bet you'd be hard pressed to tell what is Midi and what isn't Midi in the song above.
Also, I can't download any of those midi's to listen to because links are down :(

If they did remove it that's stupid.
OCR does tend to get on the liberal side a lot especially in the past, but they are really inconsistent with what they keep saying is acceptable. Telling people to be more creative because it's too faithful and then ending ruining a good song and other songs ending up crap.
Personally, I believe a middle ground has to be set between giving it our individual flavor and maintaining the integrity of the original Melody and structure.
To me, If the average fan of the game can't recognize the song within the first 30 seconds or the melody is twisted so much it's un recognizable as the song then an arrangement is too liberal.
But that's just me, and I know who my audience is.

I came across it in the local Cash Converters for a quid, and at that price with that cover art I couldn't say no. It's actually a competent if somewhat bland 2.5D platformer (think Pandemonium, but less interesting). I was expecting something a little more weird/silly from the cover.
