what is the story behind it? Is it a prototype or import? Thx!

Import. It's low profile due to it being a port of the arcade flop. I presume Tecmo titled the game "Ninja Gaiden" (only the North American title for the series) to differentiate between the "American" arcade series and the good parallel Ninja Ryukenden series.

http://www.geimuya.com/megad-list/na.htm

This place has it for sale. I don't believe I've ever seen the box.

Another few things mention it. I *THINK* it was released, but you guys have got me questioning that. All I know is that I've played it ;-)

Some Japanese MD lists list it, most don't. Most searches only turn up matches for the Game Gear version.

The book that I have, "Sega Consumer History" has a Japanese release list, but no mention of Ninja Gaiden around 1992. It could be an incomplete list but...

I honestly didn't know it was a flop at the arcades. whoosh! I used to love that game

I honestly know nothing about it's earnings but I know that Tecmo rather disowns it, for good reason.

The game is unreleased as far as I know. There are many Japanese sites that list stuff for sale even though the game was never released.

I can probably get a hacked kof 98 for megadrive (its mugen style thing). and much mor special but very hard to locate (around here anyway - and bootlegs are everywhere) is megaman x3 for megadrive - quite faithfully reproduced.

about the tetris, I thought there was a real Sega Tetris, but like the Tengen Tetris NES, it was unlicensed and later discontinued?

Is anyone willing to sell their ninja gaiden cart? THX

It was not released in Japan. I had a buyer have me search high and low for one when I was selling many moons ago. I was less knoweldeable on MD games then than I am now, which isn't much.

The bootleg Tetris is not based on the arcade version but in fact a copy of the actual Mega Drive game that went in to production but never released. There are about 10 copies of the original fully boxed version with instructions in the world. Someone posted pictures of it here not so long ago.

The bootleg Rockman X3 is also not a real bootleg in the sense like Hong Kong originals but again just a copy of the official game that was released in Japan on the SFC, Mega Drive, Saturn and probably PSX as well. Pretty crap in my opinion.

Rockman X3 was never on MD. It is a pirate original but a rather convincing one, it almost plays like a "beta" of an official game. Of course it's nowhere near complete however and most of the original SFC game's appeal is lacking for countless reasons.

BTW, this Ninja Gaiden, even if it wasn't released, is not a hack. Likely the game was leaked in 1992 because it made BBS logs in 1992.

well for sure its made by sega, as they have done a game gear ninja gaiden game themselves. Its probably like double dragon 2 on mega drive where its quality was so poor they decided not to release it(though i know double dragon 2 was released in japan, but not us due to quality reasons).

Ninja Gaiden for the Megadrive is a real game that got released in Japan. so yeah it's an import.

I remember it being previewed in EGM as Ninja Gaiden 4. at the time it sounded so awesome but from playing the rom, the game was not very good.

Actually I don't think Ninja Gaiden was ever released in japan. I have never seen a copy or a picture of a copy so I would love to be proved wrong.

This just in from one of my Japanese MD Expert Mates

Yes,I've ever seen the screeen shots in Magazine at that time.
It was a arrangement of NINJA RYUKEN-DEN as a project.
It was announced after GG NINJA GAIDEN was released.
The screens seemed like having a taste of both Bare Knuckle and
Super Shinobi. It was never released.

??

It was never released in Japan or anywhere officially. It's not even in the official Japanese Mega Drive release book while EVERY other official release is. If it was released then how come nobody has ever seen the legit box, cartridge or manual? easy, because there isn't one. Even the most rare Mega Drive game ever (again unreleased but produced) Tetris has pictures on the net.

Actually that book doesn't mention Go net or San San either..but yeah Ninja Gaiden wasn't released.

And hell..if there are piccies of the most rare MD game ever ie Tetris, how rare must san San be as there are no piccies on the web..yet;-) (rhetorical question/joke btw)
