Superb Yakumo!......Amazing how some places say things which would be banned in other countries...and worse Aussie and UK are both english speaking countries...

US say "lets' table it" in a meeting and it has the total opposite meaning in the UK.....

Yeah, it is a bit odd how even in English-speaking countries the language can be so different. I'm never going to the UK and ask about buying a fanny pack (small pouch worn around the hips here, but there... :smt043), and all my friends just pass it off as a typo when I refer to the Gamecube Zelda monstrosity as the "Wind Wanker". It's definately interesting, alright.

Maybe it's just me and my never having been out of the motherland, but I would have thought the Australians would have used "tosser" in the same context as in the UK, but guess that shows how much I know.

I think Australians do your the word tosser in the same context as British people but they seem to have a more relaxed attitude towards bad language. I saw another sign for a web site that when like this. SMELLS LIKE SHEET, LOOKS LIKE SHEET, HOLY SHEET IT IS SHEET !! Now, Australians pronounce the word sheet pretty much like the word shite. Here's the URL that the add was for http://www.holysheet.com.au/ Nobody cares there. There was even a Toyota add a while back were the guy says bugger :smt043

There really are no foul words in Japanese. I guess the closest thing you'd here is slang word for body parts, but they dont' have the same impact as say... the word cock. It's very frustrating -- I'm sure most people are in the same boat as me, when you would swear in your own language but can't in Japanese.

There are puns in advertising, but I don't find them near as clever.

I know exactly where your coming from Gaijin Punch. I swear in English so my wife copies because there's nothing at all in Japanese that's remotely close to English bad words except for Slang Body parts words or sexual words. The funny thing is that my wife had no idea of the serious offence a word like F*ck You ! can imply. She things it has the same offence level (if there is such a thing) as P!ss Off or something like that.

Yeah, I read about that in a magazine, supposedly the lack of dominant religion, difference in sexual taboos and various other things in Japanese history made swear words "unnecessary" :smt017
The article also had a nice part about rudeness in various politeness levels in the same sentence, illustrated with sentences varying in rudeness from "Nani o shite wa imasu ka" to "nani shite yagarande", the latter one supposedly very insulting :smt043

Its funny what some of them translate as:

ひれつかん

Is supposed to be "bastard" or "nasty person" but translates as:

"The fin handle it is"

Could just be my crappy translation of it though, I did use babelfish :Hangman:

Yeah, Babelfish seems to provide the translations most of the time as something akin to what the guy half passed-out in the alley near your hotel would say or something like that.
