Pacman smokes?
Yeah he's getting divorced from Ms Pacman 'cause he was cheating on her with a couple of Locorocos...sad story...
Sad but true, Loco Rocos seem much softer and lovelier than Pac-Women.

It says "Don't take fish from the pond", not "don't fish from the pond". Completely different. It's most likely a warning as the fish are far from healthy.

yeah..it makes a lot of sence, since it is very easy to pick up those fishes since there is no water in which they're able to escape.

That's a nice selection of points. At one time I had almost 10'000 points on mine. Needless to say that they have been used. Got my self two wii games with them.! My card now though had the machine make a mess of it giving me 43 tries. Just a shame I keep getting 10 bloody points each time I put it in to the machine :(

I went to Nagasaki during O-bon holiday and put some pics online:

It's a really fascinating city with its long history of Western influence. Most of the photos are not very interesting without an explanation I guess, but you'll get a few impressions. It's really worth a visit.
More forum related, I also spent a few hours in Fukuoka on the way back and dropped into Mandarake. Nice selection of rare stuff (Rendering Ranger loose for around 18.000!) but most of the normal games are quite expensive, esp. for Dreamcast.

Wow, I never realized how fascinated people are with Japan... this is a LOT of pictures of Okinawa, which is like the Hawaii of Japan. It's not exactly the same but pretty similar, people here are much nicer than what everyone calls 'mainlanders'. It's the difference between the rural south and New York, in US terms.

Every august at the end of Obon, they celebrate by burning large picture fires in the Gozan Fire Festival. Here are the best non blurry shots I could find in the 100s of pictures I took from a park in the middle of Kyoto which you can see 4 of the 5 fires, although two of them are hard to see clearly, so the Dai kanji and boat are the ones I took the best photos of as they were much nearer.
Have you been in the park near the river, between Marutamachi and Imadegawa?
I was at last years Daimonji-Okuribi at this place and just like you, only managed to get a handful non-blurry shots out of about 100. Fantastic festival, I can recommend a visit to anybody who plans to go to Japan during summer.
Here are some pictures from last year:

http://picasaweb.google.de/julian.ertelt/AGamerSTripToKyoto2007/photo#5113230781600094450
I have a lot more, including from the Funagate amd Myo/Ho-Kanji, but I thought they are too blurry to upload.
I love how eager the Japanese are with their traditions. The afternoon before the Okuribi, I spoke to a guy who worked at a wishplate thing at Ryôanji-dera and although he knew I wouldn't understand more than 10% of what he said, he continued to tell me all the history of the festival plus how many members of his family are climbing the hills to install the fires and so on. ^_^

haha, yeah. That was at NHK in Tokyo. It was a stop on a bus tour my friend (in the pic being eating by Domo) took. At the end of the tour through the place (which shows live filming of news, dramas, etc) there is a store to by lots of NHK merchandise, including Domokun plushes.
And if you don't know Japanese, there are English tour guide pamphlets available. It was pretty neat.
Mh.. gotta remember going to NHK on my next trip to Japan :)
Fortunately there are always Domokun plushes up on yahoo, so I will have one at home soon - will fit great into my large collection of Domo clip files :)

Is that in the Round 1? I played Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 against three Japanese guys there - and I won. After that they walked away pretty fast and looked at me like I was an alien, no chance for another duel I guessed :P
As for interesting cabs, I think the Densha de GO ones are slowly vanishing too?! I was only able to spot one in whole Japan, a DDGO 2 cab in Nakano. Same here in Rio. :crying: I don't understand why people got rid of them, since they were so profitable. It was the peak of multiplayer arcade racing!
Anyway, i'm playing it on the Nebula M2 emulator. It still has some bugs (some places with invisible walls, colors not right), but i would say it's 95% done.

I should have you give me a damn photo lesson. I have the same camera... but most of my photos suck.
I pass this at Shibuya station most mornings , it was a little weird to see at first, but i really like it.
Inokashira-line, right? I went by there the other day (First time in years) and saw that. Pretty crazy.
Here's a photo I took during hanami season at Yoyogi Park's dog run. If you realize how fast the dogs were running, it seems to be a much more admirable feat. I'm actually surprised neither dog was hurt.

well, 99% of everything i shoot sucks, it's just down to throwing a 4 gig+ card in there and shooting over and over and over.
some of the guys i hang out with are all insanely good photographers so i get some tips from them. When i see their photos i am always awed, but they all give the above advice - just keep shooting.

It's an art piece by Taro Okamoto a famous Japanese abstract painter. The piece is called Myth of Tomorrow and is a wonderful abstract painting showing the horrors of the nuclear bombs dropped on hiroshima and Nagasaki. I saw it last year at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

yeah, have to ride the Inokashira - slightly less painful than the Toyoko line, but not by much! Way more suicides on this line :(
But yeah, the murial is awesome. I was aware it was by Okamoto but didn't know the story behind it, i was told by a japanese collegue that it was "his vision of the future", but the actual discription makes more sense. Still, it's great seeing it each day. very striking.

oh, GP - really like the doghug picture. One thing that's really worth looking at is cropping and editing down photos. Now, not saying i'm in any way qualified and hope you don't mind, but i quickly cropped your photo (and it's a pretty messy crop at that!) :
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3396/3564423993_d1645b27ce_o.jpg
It's a cool scene - without the extra background you now have two dogs jumping in what looks like a huge, a crowd in the background including one person lookin on bemused, the top 1/3 of the picture tells you its in a park and frames the action preventing your eye leading up and away. But the killer is the white dog who looks to be looking in a "wtf you two doing?" way. Nice nice shot - again, clipping things down and editing things in terms of framing can really add an edge to your photographs.

Not enough negative space, IMO. There's plenty of photo to admire, and when you cut it down to some dogs it seems a bit restrictive.
The best elementary thing to remember is the rule of thirds, it works wonders.

definitely.
The hardest part of photography for me has been seeing creatively too. There's been a couple of helpful books but it's not an easy thing to just "do"
There's plenty of photo to admire, and when you cut it down to some dogs it seems a bit restrictive.
yup, like i say, it's not the greatest crop and it's not in a good aspect either - but just wanted to point out that with a bit of editing/framing a decent picture can become a great picture.

I actually cropped it down a lot.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7849/midairfull.jpg
You could easily do the bottom right hand corner, cutting out the other dogs... but I find them far more interesting than the people.
The photo served it's purpose though. I was seeing how fast of a moving object I could shoot w/o blur, in relatively low light. It was the afternoon, but overcast, and of course under a bunch of trees.

every single time i switch on the tv, Haruna Ai is on it.
Now whilst she's not as annoying as some of the others the Japanese are doing the usual saturation approach and i'm frankly sick of the sight of her/him already (and i don't actually watch that much tv, it's just that when the tv -does- go on round at the inlaws she's inevitably on)

Here's a before & after. I'm not sure WTF is happening. Either it's a shortcoming of JPG (likely) or me just sucking. The after shot looks great, until I save. :/
It's still better than the before, the but the sky keeps turning purple on me. It was an amazingly overcast day, which kind of destroyed all the pictures.

I'm usually all for hunting for a good bargain, but in my fruit experience (which is vast since I don't eat meat) you get what you pay for in Japan. The sad thing is, that store isn't the most expensive. It's definitely above average. Quality is good, but not excellent. Bananas are fairly priced and taste good, but their avocados suck massive balls. If I really want to cum in my pants when I eat produce I go to Kinokuniya. But, I've left there 6000 yen short and only a bag or two of fruit. O_o It's ridiculous, I'll admit, but it does taste better, plain and simple.

Do they even sell fruit like strawberries and raspberries? I bet they cost even more
GaijinPunch
06-03-2009, 08:27 AM
Yes. Strawberries are pretty cheap this time of year. You can get a nice "pack" for about 400 yen. I've got some in my fridge now. Raspberries are always expensive. However, I don't remember them ever being cheap in the US either.

hoho, the wife is quite protective of what is left of her NES collection. She'd had a huge collection but lost a whole chunk of it due to a very dull and not very interesting incident.
Anyways, so - she had had what was left in a big plastic box - and it had been put of arms reach. However, i finally got to peek inside, quite fun and a bit like xmas. Iphone photos :/

she's half Japanese half portuguese - but she basically raised in a western way, but inhereted the games part of Japan :D
These days she's more of a western gamer than anything (Halo, Rainbow 6, left 4 dead, gears etc) but she'll basically play anything (FF11, Gradius 5, etc)
anyways, last few days i noticed another couple of suspicions boxes over her side of the gaming floor. Might have to go "black ops" and see what she has in there, though i fear the shoe box is going to be N64 stuff. I note with some glee that a complete unyellowed SNES has appeared on her shelf...

I tried that but the images on Google Earth are that old that the bridge isn't even there. Only the stumps upon which it's built. At the end of the stups is a large rectangular man made built area with what looks like a shipping lane guide. No building on there unlike now.

Yakumo, odd question : are you by any chance from Liverpool?
Anyways, had to go to the ward office so decided to take a walk in the rain. Came across a whole section of weird.
Sudden amount of weird abandoned house complex things - lots of overgrown plants, disused/disrepaired play parks etc.
Took a couple of shots, but going to go back with video cam/camera (these taken on iphone) was all quite surreal.

Ah, your wife knows quality gaming. FF7 was ndeed the start of the down fall. THere will be many newer gamers who won't understand why the simple looking FF6 was the last great FF game in the series. The Final Fantasy games of today have no conection to the good games apart from the name. In away, Final Fantsy in now just a brand name to sell cack just like Sonic :(
Johnny
07-12-2009, 11:07 PM
The problem is that Final Fantasy brand is way overhyped. I mean Square Enix could make a shit game (like they did with Dirge of Cerberus) and it would sell millions of copies, while some not known company could make the greatest RPG of all time and it would sell ok.
People read "New Final Fantasy soon" and they end up acting like druggies. "Need, Need"...
I liked FFVII and FFXII, but i'm not a big RPG fan. Apart from Kingdom Hears series, Grandia 2 and Wild Arms, most fun RPGs i played were before the "3d era". Actually i think i like the first Wild Arms so much is because he mixes the 2d and 3d, and has a fantastic soundtrack. The intro music is just unforgettable.

that said, good video, its cool to see Aki at ground level like that.
I could never do that, stand out in the open and just record stuff on camera... I have a bit of social anxiety (Thanks Mom!) that keeps me from doing that kinda of stuff. I'd love to but just "can't".

threw together a quick (and choppy!) Aki-by-day time - not really much in the way of gaming in there, but gives a feel of what it's like i guess.
Incredibly ballsy (obviously!) cross dresser in the video. Guy was pretty built - the look on the old store keepers face is pretty awesome - it's somewhere near the end.

Apparently I haven't been integrated enough into Japanese society to be allowed to complain about the place, so I thought I'd upload a few images instead.
A lot of people don't realise how dangerous Hokkaidou is in the winter. A few years back when these where taken me and the misses went to Sapporo to see someone, CoCo I think.. any how on the way home we crossed over the road, and just as we crossed one of the new type Mini's flew across the pavement we had just been standing on and took out a tree, and half of a shop. Salting the roads would be a good idea.

Today (August 23rd) was the Bakan Festival here in Shimonoseki. Basically it's a festival to celebrate the old Shimonoseki or so I believe. Anyway, the main feature of this festival that most of the city attends is the dance. This consists of thousands of citizens of the city performing a special dance along the city center's main 1 mile (1.6km) street. The amount of people that take part is unbelievable. maybe these pictures can give you an idea. Sorry about the quality but I was a bit on the tipsy side...... oh alright, I was well out of it :D
All the dancers are split in to their companies that they work for. As you can see, the dancers go right off in to the distance and these pictures were taken near the center of the parade.

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2694/bakan04m.jpg (http://img4.imageshack.us/i/bakan04m.jpg/)
The people dance to the rhythm banged out by these guys while two women whale out a traditional (oh my ears are bleeding) Japanese song. Sort of a cross between enka and Buddhist chants.
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9573/bakan02.jpg (http://img193.imageshack.us/i/bakan02.jpg/)
Of course I'm not really in to this dancing because I've seen it 10 times or so, so I spent most of my time stuffing my face and drinking among the 100 or so stalls.

Is that the license plate slightly obstructed by the ladder?
Or, is it less necessary since there's a billion other numbers/characters on the back of the truck?
Yakumo
10-30-2009, 04:30 PM
I'm glad you guys like the picture. I just whish I had a real camera on me at the time. That was taken with my piss poor 2mega Pixel phone camera through a not so clean windscreen. That's why I shrunk the picture down to hide a lot of the nasty "fuzz" on it.
alecjahn, that ladder is obstructing a part of the number plate but you can get away with it. Japan has many stupid ass laws about driving and cars yet nobody gives a shit and neither do the police. The only problem you'll face is when you got to get the car MOT'ed (serviced for a new tax disc). They will fail you on such a problem. The owner of the truck would just remove the ladder before the examination though or move the number plate.

Man, that much shinning tank must be distracting. XDDDDD
I love those sparkling Japanese trucks. You never see those here in Europe, although over the past few years European truck drivers seem to have been inspired by their American colleagues and began installing lots of unnecessary lamps and reflectors on their machines :)
But chrome ain't as much "in" as it is in Japan. I wonder if there is a law how much chrome on a car is allowed, I know that cars over here are limited when it comes to the % covered in chrome b/c the mirror-effect could distract / confuse other drivers.

Driving behind a chrome truck IS really cool but you have to be careful not to become mesmerized by looking in to it for too long.
I don't know if there is a rule about how much chrome you can have on a Japanese vehicle but I do hate it when idiots in those stupid shitty 3 cylinder small cars add chrome because they are that small and shitty the light from the sun or your headlights at night just reflex back at you dazzling you. Right dumb arse twats those people are. The trucks are fine because they are high up so it doesn't bother drivers.

<-- wishes chrome vehicles were the bane of my existence instead of big for trucks and other bullshit.
When I worked at a Ford dealership (IT), I realized how many damn useless big trucks were sold in comparison to other vehicles here. I guess I do live in Kansas, which is only a state removed from Texas (sorry Texas). It always made me really happy to hear the internet sales staff (where my office was) talking to farmers who lived miles away and actually needed a truck with dualies to tow their equipment instead of just some schmuck who needed to compensate for something.
Side story: Local aero company Boeing (now Spirit) has a surplus shop and once I parked in the lot next to a FULL SIZE Dodge truck that decided to take up two spaces.
And had two full-size poodles in the front seat.
HAH
Anyways.
I figured I'd ask: is it actually difficult to drive a... "normal sized" car in Japan, as opposed to the many compacts and such that I certainly see around? Maybe just the residential nooks and crannies can get a bit technical. My friend Luke has an older Skyline and his street is pretty damn narrow. Yield!!!
Yakumo
11-09-2009, 08:34 PM
If by normal sized car you mean European or Japanese normal then no. Not a problem at all. People just buy those little shiity box things because tax, insurance and MOT fees are so cheap. My Imprezza cost me only 1 million yen. My wife's Mitsubishi EK Wagon (3 cylinder little boxy crap) cost the same. OK, her car was brand new and mine was an 8 month old ex-display with 1200km on the clock that looked and smelt brand new, but really it's a no brainier to which car you'd buy. Saying that, many Japanese guys just have no real interest in cars which is probably why they drive like shit and buy crappy "family" cars or little turdy box cars then add a load of body kits and so on until they look really stupid.
As you can tell, I'm not a fan of small box cars, people carriers when most Japanese only have 1 or 2 kids. Why the hell do you need a people carrier? I like my sports saloons / sedans like Impreza, Evo, M series BMW, Audi and so on.

Today I was very lucky to have permission to enter private Mitsubishi grounds situated in Choufu, Shimonoseki. These grounds are only open to the highest positioned people within the company so the likes of me being able to enter is quite rare. So I took the chance to grab a video and a few pictures while I was there. I doubt I'll ever be able to enter again.
These mini towers are all over the place. They represent dead members of the family that originally owned the land.

Within the grounds are the remains of what was going to be a British style house. This was built over 100 years ago however during construction the owner of the land of that time had some bad luck which cost him a lot of money. Construction of the building had to be stopped half way though. Originally the entire outer section of the house was completed but has fallen down throughout time.

next stage, mitsubishis gunkanjima ;)As you may or may not know, my wife works for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (the section that makes ships) in the foreign travel section. Mitsubishi wanted to use our son's picture in their promotion paper so we had to go to this closed off private area that Mitsubishi own for the pictures to be taken. In the whole place was myself, wife, son and some guy from Mitsubishi who was taking the photos. It was quite a thing to be in such a massive privately owned area and to be able to roam around as I pleased. Inside that mansion was quite creapy though due to there being no lights. Thank God it was so bright outside.
