I hope you guys isn't bidding to much on this thought.. you can't do anything with what you get.. cuz you are missing some vital parts.. the first that comes to my mind would be the power-card (what ever it's called). that you connect under the orca board and that is also used to connect the npdp-cart reader and the scsi-communication-card-thingy (or what ever it is). oh and of course you will be missing the controller ports, and the status-indicator-led-thingy on the front.
and how do I know this? I got one of those kits at home (luckly I didn't pay to much for it) ^^

probably repair.. atleast that what I think ;)
maybe oldengineer or some other member got something more to say on this?

Yep it's purely a brand new 'spare part'.
...It's the latest revision Orca board so it would more than likely have been originally supplied to a Dev Workshop to upgrade from an earlier Orca that didn't have the battery backup facility / outdated bootrom.
...As it happens, I have one of those brand new Orca boards kits sitting here, very nice it is to!

Eh, i think all of the internal prototypes have the stickers broken. Mine did, the few others i've seen are the same way. Notice the feet are offset from their normal base? that's so you can open the unit without having to tear the feet off every time.

Lingjr posted this thing a few weeks ago, and i said it was genuine then. It's in this thread 10 or 15 pages back. Basicly while the psp was in development, sony made roughly 100 prototypes, they have no markings on the face buttons and silver shoulder buttons. They were only given to sony employees in japan (maybe a few made it to sony america, but i've never heard of one over here). It was basicly to let the developers get a feel for the system while they were developing the games. After true production started up, sony recalled all of the prototypes and most likely destroyed them. My guess is that fewer than 10 survive. But it I really don't see why it doesn't play retail games... my guess is that it's busted.

I probably be skeptical of it from anyone else, but Lingjr is farely respectable, isn't he? Seems to have a lot of legit stuff (although maybe kind of expensive in some people's opinion...)
As for it not playing games, maybe at the time they created the protos the encryption system wasn't written/developed yet, so it will only play un-encrypted games (which UMDs are not). Kinda like the 1.0 firmware in the Japanese units allowing un-encrypted Homebrew games when it really shouldn't have...

Grr... i hate it when i repeat myself in the same paragraph. "my gues is" and then "my guess is'...
EDIT: oops, i forgot to put any real content into this post...
I've had some issues with lingjr in the past, mostly due to poor communications. My advise is not to deal with him unless you speak Japanese. Strangely enough, he tries to sell a lot of his merchandise for higher prices then it would be to actually buy it from sony/microsoft/nintendo... but obviously there are legal issues with buying it direct.

Never seen these are they rare? They pop up from time to time on ebay, at around that price from what I've seen. I saw a similar auction with the arcade board go for £50 or so a few years back. Plus it had a Sonic game (1 or 2), which probably commands more cash due to the number of Sonic collectors out there...

Not user-user but I bought a laseractive from theheathgroup (http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=theheathgroup&iid=6478214068&frm=284) on ebay and they packed it in scrap styrofoam and a half assed box and the unit arrived destroyed.
What follows is the rather fun banter between myself and the seller.

I can't speak for this auction, but anyone familiar with SCEA is well aware that the company made good use of chipped units. Quickest and easiest way to get gray units that played dev discs. Chances are, if you ever saw a gray unit running a dev disc at a show, it was chipped by Sony itself. ;)

Out of pure curiosity, what's the model number on the TEST PS2 that has both the "TEST" and the "PS2" on the top?
And how did you end up with so many pal machines? I can understand acclaim had a few, but you seem to have hundreds. They did have a european branch....

I don't recall the exact model number offhand, but these are fairly standard from Sony these days. Personally I think the TEST writing over the PS2 on the new models looks like utter shite. First time I ever saw one, I though someone was being a smartass and had simply used tape to mock up a modded PS2. It wasn't until I looked closer and saw that it was a genuine Sony product.
Of course, if you want odd looking, check out the new 360 dev kits. Microsoft really needs to learn how to color match stuff. Heh. I've taken to calling them Zebra kits. ;)

I thought the same thing on the first TEST i saw... When i found out it was real i thought it was some sort of test molding for the case design... unfortunately not. Notice on the newer models the TEST isn't colorfaded like the older design? Not sure why on that... guess it's cheeper to paint that way. But i've only ever seen one with both the PS2 and the TEST on it, i thought it was a misprint or something at the time.
And anyone who says they want a black 360? Just be glad that they went with white, the black looks like crap... More of a dark grey, looks pretty bad. And what's weirder, some of the debuggers shipped white with a black faceplate...

Hey I have a quick question. Will a GameCube NR Reader boot DVD-R's? I was thinking of chipping one of my retail units to play mini dvd backups but if a NR reader can do it without modification then I may have to look into picking one up.

Just to clear up any confusion, the auction text refers to this as one of the earliest model PlayStations, when it is really one of the latest. The external power supply was created to solve overheating issues.

Without knowing anything about the seller I'd have to say proceed with caution. 1st party Nintendo dev carts are very hard to find let alone flagship titles like Zelda. This one is on a reprogrammable GBA flash cart. In my book guilty until proven innocent.

Of course that is on an official Nintendo dev cart. Getting the official carts isn't that hard. Getting the flashing hardware to write to said carts is a wee bit more difficult. If it's on an official cart, chances are good it is legit. Especially when you look at the sheer number of CD-R burns that people blindly buy assuming they are "original."

You think?
I'm not so sure... It would be trivial for half of the people on this board to flash the rom from the retail onto a blank cart and toss it on ebay with "OMG R4R3!!!! Zelda prototype". Unless you can track the history of the cart (ie find out which magazine it was sent to for review, or which developer it used to belong to).
When it comes to ebay, i wouldn't touch half of the "protos" out there without tracing back their history to a legit source. "I found it at a fleemarket" doesn't really cut it for me.

On a more serious note, any chances of seeing a pic of the inside?

THAT is how everyone was booting retail games on the Xbox debugs long before the B-drive hack ever surfaced. Anyone who's worked with the Xbox debug for a longish amount of time is pretty much guaranteed to have that sucker on their hard drive. ;)

You know, EvoX is the one app that I could NEVER get to run on a debug. Simply refused to fire up. Would always give me the ring of death. Since I didn't need it, I didn't put a whole lot of effort into investigating it, but as far as I can tell EvoX and debugs just didn't like each other very much.

...I've never had an issue with running EvoX on a Debug, I use it all the time for odd projects, although strangely, your the second person that I've come across, that mentions they have had a problem.
...The other case was several years back, it was seeing your post that triggered my memory, I can't remember if I ever sorted it out but I guess so!
:oh:
Well the seller was unable to it, so the only way to get it now is to nag the buyer.

Hiya, classic gaming lovers! Sneak a peek at what I'm selling this time around:
* 5 games for the Sega 32x - Sega Genesis 32x (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8268463039)
* 39 games for Sega Genesis (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8268463545)
* Sega Saturn game system + RAM cart + 3 games! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8268464353)
* Super Nintendo (SNES) game system + 6 games (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8268480146)
The SNES auction marks the return of my selfish (not to mention generally useless) ex-girlfriend, who seemed to make a big splash with some of you the last time she appeared.
Since I'm feeling especially proud of that SNES auction, the winner will also be eligible to receive a 3.5" floppy disk containing various photos of that very same devious ex-girlfriend of mine - photos that are guaranteed to spark (at least some minor) interest! So, what are you waiting for? START BIDDING, ok?!?
Thanks, you're all too kind.

Nothing like compiling your source code with a beta compiler on prototype Microsoft hardware... and people wonder why there are so few DVT-3's around these days...
Wonder? Anyone who's ever tossed a controller need not wonder. ;)
Hell, that's one of the main reasons why wired controllers still have a place in the world. They don't run the risk of breaking stuff on the other side of the room. heh

Looks like a fake to me... 2 reasons:
- White labels always have white in the inner ring of the disc... It's hard to explain, but the white covers what is clear in that pic. Look at this pic for an example: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dreamcast-Le-Mans-24Hrs-White-Label-Promo-Disc-Rare_W0QQitemZ8269951437QQcategoryZ15112QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
- It's a pal game with the red swirl... Dreamcast in europe had a blue swirl. That's not a mistake that sega would have made in stamping, and all "real" white lables were stamped by sega.

That isn't even a GOOD boot. Seller is probably some kid trying to make a quick buck by burning CDs in mom's basement. Must need money to pay his parents back for the nice CD printer. ;)

I've already asked the seller a question and has updated the auction. ;)

THE BACK OF THIS DISC HAS A CD-R MARK , NOT A GD- ROM ONE

Not wanting to disagree but compiling on DVT3 and DVT4, up to say June'ish 2002 was meant to be done using VS6, hence why all the SDK's up to and including the aforementioned date default/insist to wanting VS6 with processor pack etc.
...It was only after that date that they started to move over to .net

You're probably right... i wonder if it was just my company's internal policy to use freaking beta compilers... We never followed Microsoft's rules anyway, for some reason, they always let us get away with it.
Oh... i know why... never mind... The project i was working on at the time would have needed .net. Too bad all of my old docs from that timeframe are 1600 miles away, i'd like to look over all of that old stuff.

Looks like some eBay sellers have taken to parting out the systems. Shit, if the power supplies are going for a cool $200 I may have to pick up a few systems this week and hit ebay. That's an easy way to mad profit. Heh.

Be careful with that, you do realize that you can buy replacement power supplies from MS, right?(hint hint, call the number on the back of the kiosc instead of microsoft directly for better service)

Damn, I guess this is what happens when you have a defective product and the company refuses to acknowledge it or offer replacement parts in retail stores.

Interesting the guy that asked the question says he only has a 360. There was reported thefts from returned 360's (reason they switched to UPS or so I heard). I wonder if there is a connection here. They wouldn't be able to buy a replacement because they would have to give the serial #?
