What's your favorite arcade SHMUP?
Old school or new, it's all good!

I'd have to say it's Raiden DX, With Viper Phase 1 in a tie.

I'm pretty partial to Ketsui... namely b/c I have it, and it rocks, even though I kind of suck at it.

i'm on gradius 5 right now, just buyed it two days ago, and i must say it's really fun and pretty amazing.
less impossible than the first one though, i really hope this TREASURE (one of the best arcade game developer) 's treasure will put some breath in the dying 2d shoot-'hem-up horizontal perspective sector, these game are just missing on actual 128bit video game systems!
never played shooter unreleased outside japan. well, to say the truth i never touched alot of shoot_'hem-up (i still need to try the R-type serie and many others), so i'm not the best judge for this type of games. i'm sure i'm missing alot, but i think the gradius serie (including every spin-offs) should merit the prize, pretty cool games..... Oh, and do we include non-space based shoot-'hem-ups? Gunstar Heroes should be placed in my top too. :)

Treasure stuff isn't bad... but honestly, Cave is definitely the main company keeping the genre alive. They've come out with a fantastic shmup ever year for the last 5-6 years.

I'd be surprised if there were any cave arcade machines 100 miles around me... What console ports are there? Dodonpachi I know of...

The only recent ones (unfortunately) are ESPGaluda (my favorite) and DoDonPachi DOJ. Both by Arika, and come w/ a Super REplay DVD.
ESPRade, Guwange, Dangun Feveron and Progear no Arashi are pretty good in Mame as long as you don't scale the picture. Ketsui is the only one that's playable on PCB only at the moment.

Treasure does an excellent job on their shooters, but they do branch off into lots of other genres, and Cave subsequently has them sortof beat on sheer volume of output alone. Not to say that one is better than the other, but Cave is really a dependable name in arcade shooters.
Anyways, I really like Guwange and Dodonpachi, but I think my favorite has to be Gradius. I never get tired of that one! :-D

Sexy Parodius!
Or maybe not. I like most of Konami's shmups.
On the subject of Treasure, though, I'm not sure. I find Bangaioh just confusing, and not really that much fun. Same goes for Ikaruga. I feel I *have* to buy Gradius V though - I've heard too many good things about it. And after how many months I finally saw it for sale in my local Game last week!

Stick with both those Treasure games, you will "zen" with them soon enough, I promise. Both are confusing and a bit tough to begin with.

Gradius V is absolutely magnificent, Zilog.
You cannot go wrong with that one. It's hard as hell, though.
Most shooters are, anyway.

Gradius 5 is really an outstanding game, Treasure Did a magnificent job on it and you can clearly see it from the beggining 'till the end. Go for it, you just won't regret it if you like shooters, particullary The gradius serie. The difficulty is, as in any other gradius game, hard, but not as hard as the first ones. Now i'm trying to do the game at Normal difficulty with only one Credit. I have alot of job, but it's not impossible. :P for now, i can go 'till the end of the level 5 with one credit, but i know i can do better with focus. 5 out of 7, that's not so bad! :-D

My all time favorite shooter is Galaga. I hadn't played this game till later in my youth/mid 90s but from the first credit I was hooked. I love the animations, the colors, the basic raw gameplay. :smt023
As for modern shmups, Raiden DX is definitely my favorite. It is one of the best looking and sounding arcade games, imho. From the stunning visuals and explosions, to the kick ass soundtrack. I still play this game for hrs, it never gets old. :smt023
Gradius is a very good series. I haven't played V, but from what I have read hear, I definitely need to check it out.

As an alternative i love Silkworm.
Perhaps it leans towards an action side scroller hyrid, but in 2 player the copter/jeep combo makes for a great gameplay dynamic.
Bells & Whistles. Dunno why, but just I liked this as a kid. It's probably my most prized arcade board. :)

This isnt a SHMUP per se, but the Train level on ZOE II is very SHMUP-ish, imo.
Other than that, I like the Metal Slug series.

Gunhed is my favorite shooter, pc engine game, and one of my favorite games of all time. This game is seriously the best thing to happen to the pc engine, and they seriously need a modern re-make.

I've had a bit of fun with RSG, when you switch to an American/European bios you get dumbed down gameplay, only two buttons and three, two of them modified weapons. Then there is the real treat, the intro in Engrish! I supose I could write it down and post it.

DoDonPachi for sure, followed by Blazing Star. I came across this rather interesting Japanese shooter for computer the other week called "Edoma". I only have the demo though and haven't been able to find anything at all related to it. I'd love to play the full version, but unfortunately I can't find anything on it. If anyone is interested in at least checking it out, I can post the demo up on my server for people to download.

I really liked Einhinder(sp) for psx. I think just because Square actually made a game that wasn't an RPG.
Now that I think about it Tobal #1 was good for that reason too.
All kidding aside both were really good games(Einhinder was hard as hell for me and I have yet to beat it). Silpheed gets honorable mention due to the fact that it was the only Sega CD game that didnt suck (I didnt have a PC back then).

I had a lot of fun with Metal Slug 4 -- and I know that it's full of recycled visuals and incredibly linear compared to MS3 and whatever, but twenty five cents a credit at a (former) local arcade was such a good time. Actually, that same place had Dimahoo which was also enjoyable. Simple scoring systems are underrated (one of the reasons I can't get into a lot of Cave shooters (cough Dodonpachi cough)).

R-Type for me.
The fact that an entire generation of shooters (even some modern ones actually) were referred to as R-Type clones (usually poor R-Type clones) says it all. Shooting perfection.

I go through phases of loving certain shooters,
I used to love Ibara when I was in Japan, that was just bliss. I am a huge garegga fan though. It is just such a beautiful game in not a very obvious way, you just notice how special it is over time. That and the scoring system is great, in the way you can take it or leave it. Can't wait for the ps2 version, even if it is shit like mushihime, it will scratch the itch.
At the moment I'm getting to grips with homura, not the best game, but exhilerating nethertheless (But I have never liked games with shield-esque systems that much). The music to that game is great and some of the set pieces are wonderful. I do find the scoring a bit simple but it is quite tough overall. I would recommend it, as it has a great visual style and is a solid ps2 conversion.
