I have owned two different Game Gears in my time. One of them I believe was an eBay purchase, the other lent to me by my cousin, whom I eventually returned it to. There was a little difference between the two; with my cousin's Game Gear, the little logo to the left of the screen had three different coloured dots, and on the other hand, the eBay-purchased Game Gear had no colour in the logo, the three dots were simply white. I'm not a Game Gear expert, but a quick Google image search of "game gear" brings up the coloured logo Game Gear. Was the logo changed sometime during production? Manufacturing defect? Different region? I'm pretty sure it was an NTSC game gear, by the way.
The ones with the white logo and purple Start button are the Majesco versions, I believe.
Japanese is another Game Gear version. That one is clearest to identify by trying a dual language game. Titles like Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2, will change mode based on what region they detect.

Ahh yes, that's the one I have. Wow, I didn't know they struck a deal with Majesco to manufacture them. Thanks!
I believe some Game Gears also use a center negative power supply instead of center positive.
Majesco were very late releases. There is something like 3-5 different GameGear revisions total but most of that is only noticeable if you crack it open.

fyi the majesco ones also use better caps, which means the screen is going to take longer to turn into muddy unplayable swamp mess
Let me see. That makes so far:
Center positive DC input
Center negative DC input
Majesco
Japan
Anything else? I don't know if PAL internals are different from US.

Nah, I don't think there would be any reason for there to be a difference for the game gears internals, but I know for sure PAL models still suffer from dodgy capacitors so that suggests they are exactly the same.
There was some rather "big" differences in terms of ASIC count IIRC.

Probably. It's JPN whose minor difference I'm not sure is fully documented yet. AFAIK no successful game gear language switch has been found.
