Price-Check Request: PlayStation 3, 60 GB Original Japanese Model

Hi everyone,

I've been mulling over whether to sell this or not for a while now, but think I've finally reached made my mind up. The problem is, I'm not really sure what a reasonable price point would be. Seeing as it doesn't really fall into the super rare, or highly sort after categories, I'd really appreciate some help generating a sensible price.

Here's a general description of the unit:

Model No.: CECHA00
Firmware: 3.15 (never upgraded beyond in order to preserve the Other OS functionality)
HDD: 60 GB (screw head slightly worn due to me almost replacing the drive)
Misc: Original packaging, controller, manuals and JP power cable included

The unit hasn't been used excessively, as I shifted to my trusty Xbox 360 for a while and then eventually grabbed a slim PS3 and used that. Aside from a handful of games, I only used a single blu-ray disc, so the drive should still be in tip-top condition. I intend to buff the unit up prior to selling it on, but other than a bit of dust on the casing (not inside, as I've been careful not to let dust clog things up), it remains free from damage, though might have some tiny cosmetic scratches upon closer inspection. Naturally, I'm willing to take any sort of pictures to show prospective buyers before making a sale.

So, what do you reckon? Is there a typical going rate for such an item, and if there is, could you let me know what to aim for?

A few years ago, these were selling for 60,000 yen in most places in Japan (when the slims came out a number of places had them listed for 80,000 yen complete...). They have dropped in pirce now, but they still fetch 30,000 to 40,000 yen boxed complete. Having Other OS ability seems to add 2 to 5 thousand yen to most prices. They do seem to sell on Ebay for price Assembler said but they are not common and buying a replacement may cost you more in the future.

Thanks for the information. I admit, I've also been doing a bit of snooping around the Japanese auctions and noticed a few similar machines going for slightly higher than the prices suggested before. Still, seeing as I'm based in Europe, I figured I'd be better setting the price at something which would appeal to people rather than slapping the "true" collector's value on it. As for buying a replacement later, yes, this has crossed my mind too, but I've sold many things up until now that have since increased in value. I guess that's always going to be a risk, especially if you get rid of something that later becomes a collector's item. I was kicking myself for not buying several copies of Radiant Silvergun when it came out, for example. I was living in Japan at the time and it was available everywhere. Seeing some of the prices sealed copies get nowadays makes me wish I had a time machine!
