View Full Version : Can anyone read this Shenmue kanji?

If anyone can read this, that would be great. This is a Shenmue video I purchased on eBay, but I cannot read kanji(kanji is what assembler told me this is).

1st word is katakana - says shienmuu. Next 2 characters are kanjii - ichi and shou. 3rd bit I'm finding hard.

Shienmuu = shenmue
Ichi = 1
Shou = badge or chapter

so... Shenmue first chapter ?

Umm, well I can't translate the last word, but the first character is yoko - so I'm guessing Yokosuka.

So your sentence says:

Shenmue Chapter 1: Yokosuka

That's a small "e" after the "shi", making it "she", so it's really "shenmuu". Still doesn't explain why the hell they called it "shenmue" - that's just asking to be pronounced wrong. For ages (until I saw the box) I thought it was pronounced "Shenmué"...

Play the first! It is good! It has all those elements you look for in a video game... a Sega Saturn, a games arcade, annoying voice overs, and a trap for paedophiles.

Dude -- play dat shit! It's a lovely game. And yeah, Kyuu is right. Just about every name that isn't obviously Japanese (and the tools they got to play "Americans") are Chinese.

I guess while we're on this topic, can someone point me to a site that has audio samples of all those gay pickup lines Ryo said? I never played the ENG version, so didn't really know about them until recently.

I'd actually looked before, but come up with nothing. I'll see what I can do - if not i'll try hooking up my Dreamcast to my PC and sampling them.... that one's worth it for sure ;)

And the voiceovers are appauling!

Yeah, the hideous dub is one of the things that put me off even touching Shenmue. I lost the will to live when attempting playing Grandia 2 for similar reasons...

the cheapo(HK) one has the English voiceover which sucks major... :p

should be able to pick up used DVD copy for around $5 off eBay...

So non-HK copies have Japanese voices? I was under the impression that it was only in English.

Shenmue the movie is English only. Yuu Suzuki the tool thought that the English voices sounded good. Just goes to show you that he has no idea what English "Should" sound like. Shenmue or any other game dubbed sounds bloody awful in English.

Just like any anime. Since I got a DVD player (or should I say PS2), I have never had to watch an English dub ever again!

Most of these game developers than can't speak English have far too much of a fascination with it. Anything "international" (FFVII, X, Xenosaga, etc.) should at least have an option to turn that bullshit off. Last I checked, they don't... not for the voices anyway.
