This (http://www.3news.co.nz/Megaupload-founder-Kim-Dotcom-back-in-court-Monday/tabid/311/articleID/240068/Default.aspx) is big news in New Zealand today. Who knew the founder lived here in our little country. I don't really use the site unless I'm grabbing stuff off of there.

MU has cost the US $5 million in illegal downloads/uploads. If you watch the link it says that they confiscated illegal paintings and weapons as well.

Megaupload's URL was removed, but not their actual server: http://109.236.83.66/ they asking everyone to spread their URL again.

This really sucked, Megaupload is one of the best filesharing sites to use and been using them for years.. Of course I'm not the one to pay for this "service" but anyhow it was annoying to hear.

I know they want you to spread the word. But they didn't go down just because they're a file sharing website. The FBI wouldn't have wasted their time if it was just that. They've obviously been up to some dodgy dealings aye. I'll just keep away from there for the meantime.

Yeah, I read some rumors on the web that they've been doing some sketchy shit like money laundering and that's why they went down.
Take that with a big grain of salt, obviously.

* Rackteering
* Money Laundering
* copyright infringement
* distributing content that was 'being prepared for commercial distribution'
* Aiding and abetting criminal activities

Thats not the first bust of that kind. Filehosters pay uplaoders to use their service to files get hosted with them and services can make money from the downloaders. Thats the business model involved and that broken their neck most likely. What is more scary is that they can qoute emails form 2006 in the papers and are just after them since 2009 and that the FBI can bust a company doing their business basicly in China. Guess it was a bad idea to host the servers in Virginia here.

same as alot of the old release groups, they were targeted not just because they were releasing pirated software but alot of them had side earners that were causing more hassle than simple piracy

No. Piracy costs nothing beyond potential sales. If someone makes a copy of a CD full of music I made myself in my garage I didn't lose any money at all. No money left my pocket at all, so how can it be a "cost"? And a painting cannot be "illegal" unless the country in question has some really strict free speech laws. In such a case I don't respect their idea of what constitutes legality.

I'm sure the RIAA and Universal had absolutely nothing to do with this either, pending litigation and all.
