ASSEMbler
01-17-2012, 04:37 PM
The site will be moving server and forum format with a few days.

Please read, download and empty your inbox, sent messages, and stored messages. The messages may not carry over.

The day before, the site will go into read only mode, with a "trash"
forum for discussion. These discussions will NOT carry over.

VB4 wasn't reliable or mature enough a product for quite a while.

Seems we'll be going for VB4 now :-)

ASSEMbler are you going to install the CMS version or just upgrade the forum?

Thanks for the heads up, I already backed up all my PMs.

Looking forward to this. I don't really frequent many other forums but when I do it's a shock to the system what with all of their fancy plugins and graphics.

Will be a welcome change.

Cool beans! I kinda like the old school look though.

Sounds good. I've backed up all my messages. Do we need to delete them as well?

A small request: when you do the migration, could you please return the Off Topic forums to the way they were (a single forum)? I think a lot of people would appreciate that, myself included.

Trenton_net
01-17-2012, 10:33 PM
So how are you supposed to backup your personal messages? Manual cut and paste? or is there an export function?

ThetaSigma
01-17-2012, 10:37 PM
Not too fond of all the new plugins tbh :/ I like a simple forum.

ASSEMbler did mention it was on the cards a while back but he's been very busy as of late. Fingers crossed he has time to do it in the update.

Pull up each message and take a screenshot probably...

No, but seriously, go to your pms and look near the very bottom. There will be an option to download all pms in a couple different formats.

So long as it looks like or I'm able to choose a theme like ASSEMbler_oldstyle I'll be happy. I like the darker wider theme that is simple and easy on the eyes.

Hope everything goes smoothly! =)

Backed up as .XML, saved, deleted. Went from 354 to 0 in seconds!

As for the site update, I hope you don't forget about the assembler_oldstyle theme. Good luck with the migration regardless!

It's a bug in vbb3, and it eats up a ton of database space.

Can anyone be kind enough to fill me in on when the actual migration will take place? It's kind of a tricky balancing act since I get PM's all the time about things, so clearing out your inbox just to get more in is kind of a waste. I've been trying to hold off, but if we knew an exact cut-off date, it would make things a lot easier to manage.

Will the move change the layout and possibly page load speeds? I use an older computer at home and a two year old Laptop on a public server (Starbucks). I noticed Digital Press is slower since they upgraded and forget visiting Atari Age with Java turned on.

2 year old laptop should be fine... My desktop is 5 years old and laptop is about the same and is perfectly fine for all sites...?

Use no script. You can directly block all the bullshit sites use.

Works just fine with a PowerMac G4 400mhz machine here.

I use a 10 year old desktop as my HTPC, running windows 7 on a HDTV for youtube, web browsing and h264 videos and it does those tasks as well as a new computer would. If a 2 year old laptop is running too slow for comfortable web browsing then you should probably get it looked at.

Why do you say that? ever since I switched to a dual 1ghz g4 the powerbill hasnt changed at all... if anything its less now.

Heh, I've had a G5 tower for a while now (I usually post from a PowerBook G4), and I'm hesitant to use it much because I don't want to see my electric bill -- which is usually very, very modest -- go through the roof.

What does that actually do though?
What am I saving them to?

I am not very computer oriented

And what actually is the likely hood that our PM's will vanish in the transition?
