This is just a consideration ..
I'd like to suggest a live chat , to allow all forum users to freely chat about on topic ( and also off tipic ? ) discussions.
Let's analyze the pro and the cons :
PRO:
1) Users can freely chat
2) I think that this is good to prevent forum "spamming"
3) Simple questions can be answered in no time
4) many users can get in touch easily
5) I think that in this way users can also instaurate better ties
Cons:
1) If a question will be answered , it can't be findable for future users
2) the chat should not stay too much on "off-topics" discussions
3) there is the need that somebody moderate the chat
4) this is not the best way to "preserve" discussions ( see 1) )
A chat room can be created in some ways like :
- Irc
- Social plugin ( I don't like this one )
- Skype room (?)
- Any groop chat system
I'd like to know what do you think about this ...

Sounds awesome :-)
Also a system of directly linking and/or putting a conversation into a subject would be awesome.
Or, Are a few (older) Assembler-gamers already daily or something on a chat? irc? maybe they don't mind "us" to join?
;-) Or a system of "minimal 200 post or "Your OK" to join" for the chat?
and I mean by the "Your OK" that you have be proven to be a guy/girl who know about enough about stuff and posted regularly on the forum (so a subject may appear from chat to on-line)?
wow, im getting idea's here:-) maybe this thread is fine to

There was talk of adding it to the board during an upgrade. It never came to light but I think it's still on the cards at some point.
Would be a great thing to have.

Yes , surely it will be a great thing. As I've said in the first main post , I don't like the social plugin so I prefer an irc chan ;)

Many forums are capable of this feature, but it would be cool to have a separate IRC channel :)

The assembler channel on efnet is fake and run by trolls banned from the site.

Maybe previously, but it was sneakypeanut who recreated it recently:

So its not ran by "trolls banned from the site"
Although no one is ever in there, as mentioned above.

Could you add tapatalk while you are at it? its a 1 folder upload with no configuration :)
Chatbox, you likely need to download a plugin for vbulletin (vbulletin.org - assuming your membership hasnt lapsed). You can then add it via the products and addons in the admincp (I think its called that, but I am rusty with vbulletin admin).
edit:
something like this - http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=159654

You can add a javirc client with The autojoin to #assemblergames on efnet ! That would be great !
EDIT: Also pjirc seems to be good

Id prefer that too.
I would rather use an IRC client than a web based plugin - and those that do not can use the web interface. Win win

So what's the general consensus then? Is it an external mIRC chatroom, a forum hosted vb/flash chatroom or a shoutbox?
And who's going to moderate or act as an 'op'?

That should be an IRC room , accessible both via java client ( from the site ) or a irc client ( like mirc or xchat ) for people that want a client version of it ! :)
Btw I'm already in the room ! ;)
