Actually, it's the only anime series I've watched in full, apart from FLCL, and Ninja Scroll (the movie).

Hehe I got on the Dragonball bandwagon in 1993 before the story was ended in Jump.
Some popular titles I really like are: Lupin Sansei, Urusei Yatsura, Dragonball, Ranma, Inu-Yasha, Rurouni Kenshin... popular anime is popular for a reason, it's less sucky than most others!
Some years ago I was on a One Piece kick, then I got out of anime completely but I've enjoyed Cartoon Network's airings of the Sunrise animes (Cowboy Bebop and Big O) and Wolf's Rain and Super Milk Chan (Oh! Milk chan)
Of I gotta give props to almost anything Ghibli (especially Totoro which was my favorite movie as a little kid) same with post-Eva Gainax.

Same here! I loved that movie, and it's still awesome today. :-D
I think my super-favorite was Love Hina, just because it's so damn weird and offbeat. Having watched the anime first, I went back and read the manga and found the anime to be much of the suck in comparison, but when is it ever a case where the book is WORSE than the movie?
Also really like Full Metal Panic (both seasons) and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (movie). Both Ghost In The Shell and Akira are excellent as well. Other ones I liked were Azumanga Daio, FLCL, and Eva, and I'm currently watching and loving Mai Hime and School Rumble.

Tenchi, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Full Metal Alchamist, Kenshin (Have bootleg DVDs on all the episodes), and various other series. Personally, I want to hear what Assembler watches...

Hokuto No Ken, the original series and the movie. I've seen a fair amount of anime and am a big fan of big robots if done nicely. Hokuto No Ken/Fist Of The Northstar has this strange addictive quality for me, perhaps it's because the relationships between the characters always seemed really hazy (I've read up on them read the Manga etc) and I had to figure out who was related to who, etc.
The start of the first series is a bit slow and I prefer the later episodes, esp Death Of Rei and the Sauzer death one.
Always dug the art in the manga and Testsuo Hara's designs.

Oh, I completely forgot about Tenchi... that series sorta just disappeared! Last thing I watched was the 2nd movie Daughter of Darkness, brings me back to elementary school ;)
I always liked Hokuto no Ken the movie too because it was gushing with 80's quirkyness and the Mad Max setting never gets old. If movies count, I always liked Vampire Hunter D for some reason. I dig Masamune "Shirow"'s art but I don't like his works. Happy to see no one's mentioned Slayers :P (IMO full metal alchemist is a 75% better slayers haha)
If you gainax fans haven't seen it, I recommend Oruchuban Ebichu :D It's absolutely pointless to watch just as say Milk Chan.

I'm pretty much out of Anime, but some stuff that doesn't get old.
Maison Ikkoku (although it's a bit silly)
The first 18 Ranma's are fantastic... the rest are good, but not near as
Old school Gundam (Zeta mainly)
The Crusher Joe movie is quality
Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster (new PS2 game coming out!!!)
Most Ghibli stuff. Really pissed I'm missing Haoru no Shiro
Record of Lodoss War (even though I'm not such a D&D fan)
Yamato
Gatchaman
Crap I think is shit... then and now
Sailor Moon
Macross (Shitty Pop music will NEVER save the Earth people!)
Kimagure Orange Road was pretty weak.
... and a lot of other stuff.
It's amazing how accepted it's become though. When I got into Anime (1992 I think it was) the word itself was not yet a part of the English language... nor was the term manga. Now, it's everywhere. There are manga sections in the damn bookstores!

Gunbuster :smt023
If Gatchaman = G-Force = "Eagle Riders" which I think it is, I masochistically watched that in english every sunday morning!
You're right! Kimagure Orange Road is shit, SOOO many people propped it back in the day like Ah Megamisama. I felt almost as if I were stupid for not liking them.
Oh yea, I almost forgot.. Samurai Pizza cats or Kyatto Ninden Teyandee can't think of an anime i'd rather watch.

always liked Hokuto no Ken the movie too because it was gushing with 80's quirkyness and the Mad Max setting never gets old. If movies count, I always liked Vampire Hunter D for some reason.
I thought these movies shared a common director or character designer but I have a sinking feeling I may be wrong. I am sure the Vampire Hunter D film shares one of the head production staff with another big title (I'm thinking Hokuto No Ken or Crying Freeman).
BTW try and watch the 2 eps I mentioned if you ever get the chance, some of the episodes I think match the movie easily.
I always find it interesting that I was watching some form of anime before I even knew what the origin of it was (well not just me :-) ), stuff like Battle Of The Planets (Gatchaman -badly edited I know), Ulysses 31 and Cities Of Gold being French/JP co productions, and others I missed out.
Always liked Ranma, bought the manga when I was at school, loved it but wish I'd collected the Hokuto manga also (the prices were kind of high compared to the usual US imported Marvel and DC comics).
Don't watch much anymore, but always found it slightly irritating that due to Manga video releasing some of the 1st official releases here people still call anime 'mangas.'
PS - Akira doesn't seem close to 20 years old to me. Made some Akira trailers once with some Technosoft game tunes for the audio, the music and images matched pretty well.

I like quite a lot of anime but nothing recently. My No.1 has got to be Masion Ikokku followed by Bubblegum Crisis, Urusei yatsura, Ranma and many others. I also like Gunsmith Cats, Burn Out W, Patlabour, Cyber City (English version is actually better than the Japanese), Dominion (New dominion was a bit shite though) and many others as such classics as The Humaniod, Memories, Kimagura Orange Road and Hokuto No Ken.

Hmmm.....
Trigun - ISn't Vash jsut the coolest? :smt023 And Wolfwood!
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Awesoem show, though not as great as "everyone" says
FLCL - Just....Awesome.
Naruto - Fantastic Ninja action! With great characters like Rock Lee and Shikamaru how can you not love it? And the possibilities of LAN parties with the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu! :prayer:
Excel Saga - Interesting and funny....aslong as you dont watch the dub :|
Martian Sucessor Nadesico - Good show...but the best part is the show within the show! Lets go Gekiganger 3! Gekigan-punch! Gekigan-flare! Gai-super-upper!
Love Hina - Romance with action and comedy....its just brilliant :smt023
Cowboy Bebop - Kickass show with great characters. Ed is the best :-D
Chobits - Yet again another love story :) And who wouldn't want their own persocom?
Pokemon - Yeah! I said pokemon! Why, you ask yourself? Because of two characters. Jesse and James. Go Team Rocket!!
DBZ - Only from teh saiyan saga through to the android saga. After that (cell onwards) things got all lame). Saiyan saga was the best :D But Yamcha died :smt022
Tenchi Muyo - Yeah, it kicks ass :)
There are more, but I'm sur eI've bored you all enough already :P

What... nobody's mentioned Lain? Probably my favourite anime series.
On the comedy side I'll go for a bit of Azumanga Daioh, the manga's fun too.
Miyazaki/Ghibli are pretty faultless, and some of Oshii's stuff is good as well. The new Ghost in the Shell movie was about as good as its predecessor, and given that the original is probably my favourite anime movie ever that's pretty high praise. Wasn't a huge fan of the first SAC series, the characters felt completely different from the film, in personality as well as drawn style. I haven't read the manga yet, maybe that'll help.
Not really feeling Comboy Bebop, Trigun or any of the "comedy-action" series. Also, death to dubbing!

Lain's one of the freakiest series I've ever seen. And that's the good kind of freaky! Though I don't think a lot of people have heard of it, especially over here (probably due to Pioneer being douche bags and not selling any videos here or in the UK any more). Thank god for Amazon and the Region-X disc (for playing any region DVD video) for the PS2!
I haven't seen much anime outside of the kid's crap I get on TV here (my stupid cheap-ass cable doesn't include Cartoon Network or Sci-fi), my friend's 15-year collection of old Manga Video crap (Devilman, Gall Force, Akira Lensman, Project A-ko, etc. - please kill me now! OK, not all of it was crap), and some fansubs I've got off teh interweb (Love Hina*). OK, I've seen a lot of anime - just not much GOOD anime!
*I used to like Love Hina. I read most of the Manga (12 books?), then started getting some (truly awful Japanese->Korean->English) fansubs, but then it started to just annoy me and I realised how retardedly repetitive it got. There's only so many times I can laugh at Keitaro accidentally falling into Naru's tits! I think this - and Mahoromatic - have put me off ecchi forever...
Anyway, other stuff what I like:
- Evangelion (after watching it 4 times over it kinda makes sense. No wait... it doesn't)
- Big-O
- Stupid shit like Dragon Half
- Lupin III - ok, I've only seen Castle of Cagliostro but I *really* want to see the TV series as well! On a related note, Hayao Miyazaki's teh pwn :-D
- Cowboy Bebop
- FLCL - though I don't think it was the best thing EVAR like some seem to believe. It was awfully confusing/nonsensical at times...
- Err... can't remember anything else now. My brain's broken.
Kid's crap I watched too much on TV:
- Pokemon (trust me it was good at the beginning, but after ep. 18 it started going downhill - after about ep. 200 it just became FUCKING UNBEARABLE. The Japanese soundtrack's bitchin' though)
- Moomin (the early '90s TX anime series - best thing that ever came out of Finland and Japan together!)
- Digimon (I used to watch this religiously. I also used to have no life. Kind of nice how the different series were actually different - especially the 4th one)
- Megaman Windows NT Workstation or whatever it's called. It was watchable. Kinda.
- OK, they're not really anime, but the animation that Ashi Pro (I think) did for the crappy '80s Dic cartoons was wicked-bad - stuff like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, MASK and The Real Ghostbusters, but especially The Real Ghostbusters!!
Blur2040

For all intents and purposes, I hate anime...but I occasionally see it as I flip through the channels.
And the only thing that's every interested me is Lupin III. I like cartoons where everybody isn't a giant robot or a ninja or a giant robot ninja. Lupin fits the bill, and is pretty damn entertaining...i've yet to see anything else I like.
I like stupid American cartoons...Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen, South Park, King of the hill...Simpsons, Family guy...Futurama...the list goes on.

It won't. :) I'll buy the JPN DVD before it comes out here. I just couldn't fathom watching a Ghibli movie dubbed.
looks like a few us here share the same thoughts -- old school is better. I did forget to mention Akira. I always took shit for saying this is pretty much the best anime out there. Think about it -- one of the first mainstream movies that had the balls to have a really GOOD... no EXCELLENT soundtrack. I even went and saw the team that made it perform in Shinjuku.

I dunno, I think you should give it a shot sometime. Most US dubbed anime has horrific voice acting in my opinion, but I didn't think the American releases were bad at all. Mononoke had some pretty high quality acting talent too - Billy Crudup, Gillian Anderson, Minnie Driver, Billy Bob Thornton. And there's nothing funnier than having Phil Hartman behind the voice of Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service. :smt043

When was Anime/Manga started? I know of Astro boy from the 50s, but what was the exact first anime/manga show?
I was reading in History one day, and saw some signs made by some Japanese people or something, with pictures on them, and No "big eyes". When was the "Big eyes" trend started?
Calpis
02-02-2005, 12:25 AM
I think the big eyes thing was started in the 60's, (with Tetsuwan Atom which my Japanese teacher always recognized as the first anime.) Also she always said that says Japanese draw big eyes because Japanese like big eyes and many wish they had bigger eyes ;) I know that weekly manga dates way back to pre WWII Japan in the form as seen today, but of course characatures through ukiyo-e are like hundreds of years old.

I couldn't agree more ! There are only two anime that I prefear in English and they are Dominion (1 to 4) and Cyber City. Cyber City has much better music than the japanese one plus the voice acting is top. just as you'd expect. Dominion has great voice acting too but the japanese music is far better than that cheap techno shit on the dubbed version. how does the japanese song go now ? In Australia they released the first 6 episodes and just didn't bother releasing the last one. Took me a year or so to finally get it on import(can't quite remember but did Manga take forever on getting the last ep translated). Aus used to suck for Anime. A few bits here and there from Manga and only one import store(overpriced) and I didnt even know about fansubbers then.
I wish Imagawa could continue GR. The set up for the next story in the last ep still has me drooling. Hopefully......one day :smt022

Xerdo's Favourite Anime list
(Not in any particular order)
1) Cowboy Bebop / Cowboy Bebop the Movie (Did you know that it's required to watch the whole series in many Film schools? There's a whole course on Cowboy Bebop)
2) Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns (The 3 episode OVA - the Series is not that great. This one is written by Satoru Akahori, an expert in suddenly depressing his audience. Who would have thought Yuna could have serious moments?).
3) Shinseiki Evangelion
4) Macross Plus (The Movie. First work of Watanabe, the Same director as Cowboy Bebop. You can see the style)
5) SDF Macross (The last 7 episodes are boring, though)
6) Genshiken (An anime about people who like anime)
7) Yakitate Japan (Like Captain Tsubasa... but about BAKING BREAD!)
8) Chobits (The design in it is SO great!)
9) Saint Seiya (But only the Mexican dub, because it's SO bad it's good! The series is quite cool in the japanese original, though. The Hades saga is great)
10) Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Come on, this is a classic! I, at least, enjoy a little bit of shoujosity and magical girlitude!)
11) Agent Aika (Me and my mom watched this on Cable, also. Believe or not, my favourite thing about Aika - beside Rion - is the music. It's so cheesy it's great! And at 72 panty-shots per episode, it's got a little thing for everybody)
12) Tales of Eternia (I like this because I loved the game. The anime is QUITE mediocre, but I really enjoyed it anyway. I'm too much of a fan... and Coleena is really cute. I hope they put her in the PSP version of ToE... not likely)

Just finished Kanon, which has skyrocketed to one of my favorite animes ever. Beautiful story, but it's damn sad though.
On a semi-related note(for anime, at least), while I have never seen an episode of Naruto, I found out that real naruto is that oddly shaped fish slices with the pink spiral in the middle that you can get with ramen or udon. This is both enlightening and reassuring, as I was always a little disconcerted by the fact that I never knew what the hell the stuff was, much less what it is called. I started watching Rouroni Kenshin and it's pretty good.
Kenshin is one of my favourites. However, the quality of everything past the Shishio arc (episode ~55? 65? I forget) is kind of meh because the story isn't written by the original author.
The TV show was following the manga and the mangaka took a break, so there wasn't anything to animate. So they decided to write their own stories.

For a classic Anime, id vote Project A-Ko, have it all on VHS, before the double parter, its classic stuff.

It was a joke. Quite possibly the WORST anime ever made (not as bad as DBZ though, let's not go there). And a huge blight on the good name of Panzer Dragoon.
Should be on eBay for not much, VHS. Saw the LD on YJ as well.
Word on that, it's pretty much just a cartoon version of the FMV in Saturn PD, I was so excited getting this, i still wouldnt get rid of it heh.

Just finished watching Air and Beck, and I think those have to go on my favorites list as well, excellent stories both (aside from Air's ambiguously confusing ending). They both had excellent music, and Air's animation style was the best I've seen in anime outside of GitS2. Beck had some really nice visuals, but the animation was really choppy at parts. Of course, having what seemed like half the series in hilariously done Engrish definately made up for it.

Serial Experiments Lain (The most complex and difficult to understand story I have seen)
Naruto (back before it was nothing but flashbacks)
Spirited Away (Truly a masterpiece, one of the greatest animated films of all time imo)
Bleach (I've been keeping up with this one for a while now, although I think the current plot is getting a bit long winded, its still one of the best i've seen).
Their are plenty others I've liked alot (Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Rahxephon, eyc.), but those are my fav ones.

Hmm, some good titles in there.
Maison Ikkoku - Oh yes! Best anime of all time for laughs, sadness, storyline that is sort of believable and the ONLY anime I've EVER watched that had me saying "Go on you soft sod! Tell her you love her!" at the TV.
Urusei Yatsura - Again a wonderful classic although I found one or two of the movies a bit on the turd side.
Genshiken - No idea on this
Azumanga Daioh - Oh fuck yes! This is the one where the guy turns in to some sort of blue mutant killing machine, right?
Lucky Star - Not my cup of tea but have saw a few.
Hidamari Sketch - No idea.
Card Captor Sakura - Eh??? You've got to be joking :110:

I have a bookcase full of Graphic Novels, most of it is manga. I'm so happy now that the mainstream companies are leaving translated manga in it's proper right-left format. I actually sold all my original Gunsmith Cats GNs to a friend and replaced them with the four new unflipped collected editions.
As for anime, I like Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, that sort of thing. Both series of Stand Alone Complex are incredible. The Patlabor movies are boring, tbh, but I really enjoy the TV/OVA series. Silent Mobius is well worth watching. Original Bubblegum Crisis is still fun to watch too.
Generally I'll watch anything decent involving spaceships, heavily armed mobile suits and cute gals ;) I do sometime go off on a tangent though: I feel like watching Record of Lodoss War.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I couldn't appreciate it much after I realized the whole thing was actually about the mother issues and difficulty with interpersonal relationships that characterizes postwar Japan.
Hmm, some of my favorite anime:

8 Man After (OVA)
Rose of Versailles

I liked Digimon...
After watching it again though, I realize its pretty childish. But I loved that shit for like a looooooong time, and watching the first season always makes me go on a nostalgia trip.
I don't really have any other anime...in physical form anyway.
The Arc the Lad anime was decent, but it was damn short.
I think Evangelion is like this:
Decent story, then it has the most retarded ending ever, everyone's emo, the mecha fights are awesome, but thats like maybe ~2~ hours of the whole series. The rest is Shinji going "UNFAMARU CEIRING ME SO RONERY SO ME MASTURBATURU TO UNCONSCIOUS WOMAN" Ok, that was dumb but you know.
Its not as deep as its retarded fans claim it to be, its about as shallow as shallow gets, like a ton of JRPG storylines and etc.
I love Hayao Miyazakais films, I think they are the only Animes I've seen that don't try to be deep or incredibly violent but still manage to captivate you in some way, and are pretty family friendly.
EDIT: Yakumo, I noticed you mentioned Pom Poko. Yeah, thats probably the only Ghibli movie I didn't really like. It dragged on forever, almost all the Tanookies died anyway, and you could see their balls. Gross.

Kenshiro Facts
Kenshrio once roundhouse kicked someone so hard that his foot broke the speed of light, went back in time, and killed Amelia Earhart while she was flying over the Pacific Ocean.
If you ask Kenshrio what time it is, he always says, "Two seconds 'til." After you ask, "Two seconds 'til what?" he says You're already dead and you explode
Kenshrio once shot down a German fighter plane with his finger, by yelling, "Bang!"
Kenshiro can hit you so hard that he can actually alter your DNA. Decades from now your descendants will occasionally clutch their heads and yell "What The Hell was That?"

Xenogears is MUCH deeper than Evangelion is and ever will be.
Xenogears:pray:
I think everyone my age had a thing for anime at one point, but I think around high school when I actually started watching it (I have friends that are obsessed with it) I realized I just seriously don't like it, especially these newer ones. I do like Lupin The Third a lot, and Shin Chan, and a few others were cool. I think it's some of the art styles I liked but....yeah. I think a lot of this comes from not knowing japanese, I know there's subs but still. I honestly think I like just straight up cartoons a huge amount more.
I did like reading some of those mangas though, my friend had almost every Ranma and I think I read about 20 of them. There, well, comic books, and I like those, though I barely read them. Those were pretty cool. There was this one called Confidential Confessions that was pretty entertaining.

I cycle through the following every year whenever I can't travel.
1. I listen to the same 400 songs, like right now it's punk, later random japanese stuff, further heavy metal. Sonic and Ocarina of Time OSTs are pretty much year round.
2. Gaming and Anime flip flop my focus, like now any PS2 game will reduce my ADD better than any ecchi. By fall after the ladies start wearing less sexy clothes i'll be watching ecchi again.
3.Live action stuff will take center stage over all cartoons even long time favorites like Reboot...
The point i'm trying to make is this.
We're cyclical creatures by design. Does anyone else go through perceived odd roundabouts through the course of the year?
In the back of my head I know i'll be replaying Ocarina of time for the 17th time...
When did Xenogears get an anime? I can't bring myself to finish the game.

Having a favourite anime is tough just like a favourite game but anyways heres some of my favs off the top of my head,
Oh and just on a side note, one movie from Japan that isnt an Anime that you should check out is called "DROP" released in 2009, its FREAKING HILARIOUS.
Anime Series:
Hajime no Ippo *Boxing/Comedy* (Funny as hell but also really gets you into the story and caring about the characters)
Ranma 1/2 *Comedy*
Ghost Shell: Stand Alone Complex *Sci Fi/Action/Drama* (Intense well developed story that you would expect from Ghost in the Shell)
Cowboy Bebop *Action/Comedy*
Samurai 7 *Action/Drama/Sci Fi* (Really good animation and a nice spin on the original live action story line)
Last Exile *Action/Drama*
Valkyria Chronicles *Action/Drama/War* (It follows the video game pretty faithfully but with enough extra dialogue/scenes to keep it interesting)
Pumpkin Scissors *Action/War/Drama* (Similar in ways to Valkyria Chronicles but only in style, it really is its own series)
Anime Movies:
Anything Ghibli *Children/Fantasy*
Nausicaa *Action/Sci Fi*
Akira *Action/Sci Fi*
Ghost in the Shell *Action/Sci Fi*
Summer Wars *Drama/Comedy* (One of my favourite movies, anime or not)
The Girl who Leapt Through Time *Drama/Comedy*
Origin: Spirits of the Past *Drama/Sci Fi*
Metropolis *Drama/Sci Fi* (Love the art style and feel to this movie)

I got Samurai 7 and the Evangelion Platinum series off of Amazon for pretty cheap a while ago. I haven't had the time to watch them yet.
The order in which I'm supposed to watch Evangelion has confused me a little. And one of the movies, End of Evangelion i think, is it out of print or something and pretty expensive everywhere. =/

Evangelion is meant to be watched in order... Ep 1 through 26.
Death and Rebirth is more of a recap of the 26 episodes... and IIRC it adds a little info to the story, in case you didn't understand something... but it may confuse you more.
The End of Evangelion is the actual movie of the series, and it helps understanding the series a little bit more.
So basically I'd say you watch the series in order and then The End of Evangelion. Death and Rebirth is no big deal; you may leave it for some other time.

And then I also picked up a few other dvds for cheap. Let's see... I have Evangelion 1.11 You are (not) alone and 2.22 You can (not) advance. And from what I understand they're the series remastered or redone or whatever? But what also confused me, while reading the wiki, it refers to these movies as Evangelion 1.0 and Evangelion 2.0. But then 1.01 was released on dvd, and now I have 1.11?? And I haven't discovered if all 3 of these are the same?? I feel like it's not as straight forward as it could be... hahaha

I read about these new releases; I think it's the series in movie-length episodes (less episodes, but same story...).
To be honest I'm not sure if they changed something (ie. graphics or story wise) and I didn't know there were several versions of the same (1.0, 1.01, 1.11)... can't help you there :S
