An even slimmer PS3 is supposed to be coming out just before Thanksgiving holiday in the USA. Supposedly at $199 or below.
A few sites are reporting on this. Original source: http://www.gadgehit.com/2011/07/26/psthree-a-more-likely-announcement-at-gamescom/

Sounds interesting, I wonder if they'll restore PS2 backward compatibility.
Along with whichever new features they'll stick in. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Clearly you've got the wrong end of the stick and this is the new dreamcast 2

For 200 I might pick one up. I just don't have a good tv yet...
You do realize that the article you link to is purely speculatory, right?

I'm not sure if you're taking the piss, but this is Sony we're talking about here.

Interesting but unlikely. It costs a lot of money to redesign a system. Why not just drop the price of the existing model?
Though in a better world, they would make it the size of a PSTwo and add BC functionality back. That'd be an awesome system to toss in your backpack and take to a buddy's house.

I think the return of PS2 BC in a PS3 is never happening. Have you seen how many "HD Compilations" have been coming out? It's practically free money for these studios to re-release titles that just run in a higher resolution (though I hear Ico/Shadow of the Colossus is supposed to have better textures as well).
Off the top of my head I can think of the following:
Beyond Good & Evil HD
God of War Collection
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
The Prince of Persia Sands of Time Trilogy
Resident Evil: Code Veronica HD
Resident Evil 4 HD
Silent Hill HD Collection
Sly Cooper Collection
Splinter Cell HD Collection
Zone of the Enders HD Collection

I wonder which feature they'll be removing this time!

I call BS: most rumors actually point to a PS4 since sony its in the 3rd place and the PS3 has been literally ass-raped by geohot.
With the wiiu following the steps of the last one by using 6 yr old tech if sony launched the PS4 in late 2012 they could overtake msft's next xbox.

another historical prediction I read? :-)

I don't know why people think there will be a "PS4" or "Xbox720" anytime soon. With the terrible world economy situation, there's no point in launching a new system.
Sony only started recovering after the PS3 Slim launch and it's reduced price. The Xbox360 just recently released a redesigned version, plus the whole Kinect gimmick. The only reason Nintendo will launch WiiU is because they've been making huge profits with the DS and Wii (that didn't cost too much to produce in the first place). Plus the Wii was a different thing on the market. Nintendo never planned to compete on graphics or wow factor, against Sony or Microsoft. They aimed at casual gamers and got a shitload of money. They could have failed terrible.
I don't see a reason for Sony or Microsoft to release a new console before 2014. A new console would cost at least 500 dollars (at retail that is). Probably they'll loose money on every single unit, plus devs would worry about making a game for a expensive console that wouldn't sell that much because of the economy.

Nintendo is launching the wiiu because sales of the wii went down before it was expected, and they cant let the wii hype machine die.
The PSV shows sony has learned that they can make a kickass console with regular components and save a ton in R&D, instead of using special HW like in the PSP and PS3.
Remember when I said quadARMs were going to be as powerful as a PS3? check Drake in the PSV.
Right now sony could launch a PS4 using similar components for a fraction of the costs of the PS3, and while it wouldnt be a big jump like that one was from the PS2, it would still be much better than current hardware like the X360.

Heh, Microsoft would be thrilled if Sony did that. Then whenever they were ready for their next console their graphics would virtually be a full generation ahead of the current Sony and Nintendo consoles.
Two screens, touch input, and 3D. That's the future, my friends.

I think Nintendo is doubting that at the moment.

It depends on the redesign you are talking about. Xbox 360 had many redesigns that the average consumer never knew about. Combining chips like the CPU and GPU and using smaller process sizes and other misc things can all be done to reduce the cost of the system and boost sales or profits. I'm sure it costs more when they do a major redesign like the 360 Slim or PS3 Slim but clearly it must be worth the cost to reduce the costs of each console.
I'm sure Sony would be very happy if they could make the PS3 hit the $199 mark for next Holiday season. But then again they probably want to play up the PS Vita.

I hate it when gaming sites speculate about things like this based on tiny bits of information. Recently I saw something on Kotaku that said it was likely that Sony and Microsoft would work together on the next console. I didn't even bother to read the whole thing because it sounded so stupid. It's not altogether impossible, but there's really no good reason to think that it's true.
Anyway, as far as the hardware goes (software's a different story), I'm pretty happy with my PS3 Slim. It's very quiet (much quieter than my 360), relatively small, attractive (looks better than the original to me), and it works reliably. The only thing it's missing, for me, is PS2 backwards compatibility. If they added that, I might actually consider selling mine and getting a new one, but that seems extremely unlikely for all the reasons people have already mentioned.

They would be shooting themselves on the foot: Nintendo made that same mistake with the N64, which had better graphics than the PSX but not enough to be nextgen.
Besides the gap between the "X720" and the PS4 would be smaller than between the latter and the X360 since you can only go so far without resorting to really expensive components, and msft shareholders are still asking for the +$4 billions spent on the first Xbox

There is a new CECH-3000 model shipping to retailers soon: http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/20/new_ps3_model/
http://www.jp.playstation.com/ps3/hardware/cech3000b.html
3000 is a major model change. Previous models were in the 2000s. They say the pricing of the CECH-3000 is the same, but the model has a 320GB drive.
There has been talk of Sony trying to incorporate the RSX and CELL into one package. Due to the different manufacturing processes, this would be hard to achieve, but Sony are masters at component reduction (whether you love or hate them for it). If we are to see another big shrink in motherboard size and case size, they would presumably have to go that next step.
The power change of the 3000 series is not massive suggesting that it is not an incorporation of the two, but 30W is a decent amount.

"The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards," Sony says. "PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content."

Blu-ray on the older systems will output 1080i over component. Apparently this change is true for all new Blu-ray systems.
