View Full Version : Which US/European items are "rare" in Japan

We all know all the cool stuff to come out of Japan that never gets released abroad, but what forgien stuff is considered rare or collectable inside Japan?
If say I were to go to Japan one day, and I was interested in bringing a few items to sell or trade, what would I want to bring?
I would assume any special edition of a game would problably go for more, and I'm sure there's some stuff that never gets released there.

Sega Nomads/CDX sell very well in Japan and Jaguars cost a lot but probably don't sell well. They don't like much else of ours :\ If you wanted to peddle US Wrestling Games that haven't been released in Japan, there are some US import game shops that sell the crap for outrageous prices and maybe you could trade or something.

Just nomads. You're better off selling usa only nike shoes and vinyl than u.s. game goods.

Yeah, bringing games to trade sounds like a good idea.
So is it safe to say that most domestic games get a Japan release?
Also, what about the collectability in Japan of South American items (like the Master system Girl, Brazillian SMS or NES games, tec toy stuff, etc?) I assume those things aren't flying off the shelves in the motherland?
This would be interesting to know, becasue when I go it would be nice to make a little $$$$.

There's the problem with Brazillian stuff, though, that they won't work in Japan due to different TV standards. PAL-M support is very uncommon outside South America.

Just a question, how big is the Japanese import scene? As big as it is in Europe or North-America, or a lot smaller than that?

Allee, ne Belg! Welkom!
(if this doesn't make sense, I guess you're a Walon)
I think the import scene is a lot smaller, though some "normal" gamestores around Tokyo had a few US games, too.

Anyhow, sorry for interupting this thread with Dutch, do continue. ;)

Nou, ik ben half Belg (van moeder's kant) en ik ben regelmatig in Antwerpen en Knokke... over het algemeen zijn games ook nog eens goedkoper en beter te vinden in België, en jullie bier is beter ;-)
I apologize for this OTness.

Cool, ik kom uit de buurt van Antwerpen en gezien ik familie heb in Nederland kom ik daar ook best vaak. Ik heb de indruk dat je in Nederland goedkoper nieuwe titels kan kopen, toch in bepaalde delen van het land...
Anyhow, I think it would be better to start a seperate thread or something, we don't want to polute this topic, now do we? :smt023

You mean 'sloefen', 'sleffers' & 'sletsen'...
That's how we would describe wooden shoes/sandals in dialect. :smt042
Mind you, these are no everyday words, I had to think for a few minutes before I came up with them. ;p

ah, thanks for clearing that up (I knew no Flemish dialect for shoes so I used some other words from my memory like "sjakosj" which I think means purse) :smt043

Just remember those words are more like synonyms of sandals than shoes. You'd best use shoes to avoid any weird looking faces too. ;)
I know Akihabara is tax free, are stores in Osaka too?

"Akihabara" isn't tax free, although there are duty free shops. The rule is though that you have to have entered the country within the last 6 months to qualify for duty free (anywhere) although some places bend that rule. AFAIK, no game shops honor this.

I always confuse tax free with duty free, sorry. I meant duty free.
So you need to visit Japan regulary/live in Japan to shop duty free?

Yes, or at least leave every now and again. The thing is, you can usually find something cheaper than at the duty free shops, so it's almost never worth it.

Save your receipts and you can get it back when you leave.
Never tried this, but am aware you can do it.

Never heard that one. Then again, the shortest amount of time I was ever in the country was 9 months, so they probably wouldn't cut me slack. Lemme know how it goes though.
I do know, however, that I will get 7 years worth of Social Security back next month. :D

You can buy a mustang in Japan. Just that the terrible handling, and even worse gas mileage make is a poor seller.
Now the giant escalade and explorer sell well. Because the Japanese
watch too much NBA and listen to too much US rap.
They want the "bling bling" too
Or if I was Japanese, the "bring bring" :smt042
