I like a lot of the Acid House from the late eighties into the early nineties, and the more soulful side of House music (Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Masters at Work productions etc).

Wasn't overly keen on the Euro-techno stuff. It does remind me of my school days though. Good times! :-)

Hmm, If it's Dance then there's an awful lot of stuff that I like / liked. KLF always brings a smile to my face then there's one off tracks from the likes of Cappela or Euro DJs that have good beats. I never really liked SNAP but I would listen to some 2 Unlimited.

So we are talking about Eurodance (genre) ? well some of my old favourites, are Dr. Alban, Aqua(yeah they were pretty late but they were still Eurodance), Scatman John, Culture Beat and London Beat (yeah those are really old, but I still remember them as some of the first Eurodance artists), but I can not forget the song, that to me really started the Eurodance genre. Which is Sabrina with Boys Boys Boys :-) Miss big titties :-)

But since youtube has become wankers about that song, and her tits. Then youtube can go fuck them selves, anyway here is the song on streemo :-) and Jesus Christ, the song is nothing in comparison to Rammsteins song ;)

I hate the "DJ" and electronic dance music genre, but I love electronic music. I just could never get into repetition for the sake of repetition.

That, and I am the exact opposite type of person to ever be dancing. The closest I'll get is when I'm playing an instrument and lose myself in the expression.

Although, that being said, I like a lot of stuff that is on the edge - old drum and bass (and related) things. I can get down.

Although, that being said, I like a lot of stuff that is on the edge - old drum and bass (and related) things. I can get down.

Its not for the sake of repetition, its for the sake of mixing. There is a lot of dross because it sounds boring and repetitive, yet a lot of stuff uses it to its advantage to create a big build up/breakdown (Trance) or get you focused on a hook or choose sounds and arrangements so they form 'one sound', if you get me. I don't like most Techno, often just sounds too sterile and the higher BPM 'bouncy' and hardcore stuff tends to be fairly crap. Like you I don't really do dancing, yet listen to a lot of 'club music' at home though for that reason it tends to be the sort of stuff that is aimed for home listening.

Can't listen to your mix atm gaijinpunch, but what sort of tech house are you into. As a straight genre I'm not massively keen on it but I listen to a fair bit of stuff that crosses over into the techier deep house sphere - Milton Jackson, Mayaan Nidam, Jet Project, Namito, Timmy Stewart, MCDE etc.

Mainly a fan of deep house, though mainly stuff that doesn't use jazz instruments (guess you could say techier stuff, but I mean in the sense that it isn't tech house influenced). Stuff like Akufen, Anton Zap, Hiro, I:Cube, Patrice Scott, Wbeeza etc.

Then theres plenty of cross genre stuff like Pantha Du Prince (Techno-deep house) is one of my favs.

Then there is tons of early stuff, Underworld, Orbital, Chemical Brothers (who have been consistently good apart from push the button, only 3 or 4 good tracks there) and so on.

Some good trance too, though it got way over abused. Pity I only got to Gatecrasher after the party had ended, it was shit before it burnt down - like too many UK clubs these days outside of London they just played the same chart guff. Anyway, Flat 6 - Its too late is probably my trance favourite. So deep, dark, oppressive then that euphoric hook slowly emerges out of the background during the breakdown....its the sort of thing epiphanies are made for.

I could go on forever as there is so much good stuff. Amazing how quickly it has diversified over just 20 years, people complain about the huge amount of genres and their sometimes silly names but its worth it as there is always something good to listen to.

Binary Finary - 1998 (Matt Darey remix)

Always preferred 1999 the gouryella version, used to blast that out with the mid/lows turned up at uni as I was the only one with a decent sound system.

I've just put together a 8 minute track of some "dance / techno" tunes from the mid 80's to late 90's that are on my iPod at the moment. You can get it here - http://www.segagagadomain.com/Yak-techmusic-samp.mp3

The track features the following tunes in this order.

2 Unlimited - Jump For Joy
666 - Paradoxx (Club Mix)
Antiloop - In My Mind
Bomb the Bass - Beat dis
Cappella - U got 2 know
FAB Featuring MC Parker - Thunderbirds Are Go! (Vision mix)
Faithless - Insomnia
Felix - Don't You Want Me-Fierce Mix
Guru Josh - Infinity
Harajuku - Phantom of the Opera (Techno Remix)
Hithouse - Jack To The Sound Of The Underground
RAF - We've Got To Live Together
The KLF - What Time Is Love
The Time Frequency - Schitzoid
U96 - Das Boot

Some great club tracks on there from my youth. I have a wide taste in music so I'm happy to listen to any of the above (it's all about the beat, pitch bend and imagination for me) to something completely different such as Elvis Costello to 80's / 90's pop to game music. I won't listen to F*ing rap, wailing divas, country music or pretty much anything in the carts these days.

I mean, it's dance music. Meant for dancing. If there were (quick) dynamics, it would defeat the purpose in a live/club setting. I'm certainly not trying to generalize TOO heavily, more single out a specific type that I dislike.

That being said, one of my favorite bands has released a couple albums of the most minimal music ever, objectively speaking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cAIIbHADOI (totally not dance music) I bring this up to say that I totally understand the meaning behind monotony and can certainly enjoy it... but I feel there's a reason behind it in these cases - the music is made to convey a certain idea, not encompass an existing one.
(I hope that last statement isn't taken the wrong way, I don't mean to sound so binary as I certainly am not!)

All this being said, I do apologize for inadvertently trying to derail.

Also:
I love Orbital. But that's probably nothing interestingly notable - of course they're good. :D

Haha, I've met Devvo before.

Not sure if you are taking the piss or not, I was wondering whether to include dubstep or not. Part of the wider contemporary scene but doesn't really stem from it scene or style-wise.

As with anything else a lot of shit (wom wom LFO abuse) but some quality stuff - Jamie Vex'd, Kuedo, Untold (Sweat, Kingdom...none of his tracks sound similar), the four tet/burial collaboration, james blake, eprom, joy orbison, slugabed (check out 'one of us' with a good system the bass is lovely. Its on youtube but will be sub par quality...), shackleton and so on.

True, eurobeat stuff just doesn't gel with me.

some good artists there, Renegade Soundwaves remix of Tubeway army are friends electric is quality. 808 State, Pacific is gotta be the best - I can't mention them without mentioning A Guy Called Gerald though.

I can't view youtube atm, but I take it that tune isn't minimal as in the dance genre ;-)

I think I get what you are saying, but I see it this way - interpreting, rather than encompassing. The sheer variety layered on a small selection of basic rhyths in each genre of house is what makes it exciting, so many different feelings coaxed out of a limited framework. After all being limited often helps innovation and creativity. What I do dislike is people using the same sounds over and over, like the wom wom lfo in dubstep, jazz instruments in house etc, it is annoying because especially these days with the massive plethora of free vst plugins, soft synths and so on yet people still sample a lot (though that contradicts my last sentence, but there are different reasons). I know the heritage behind it, and it can be used very creatively, but imo it is time to move on as I say there are many more options now. With computer software there are endless possibilities but mainstream dance doesn't push the limit, most likely due to commercial interests, rather than its heritage of sampling.

Talking about Orbital Belfast has to be my fav...though theres chime...halcyon..too many good tunes.

Don't. Dubstep is complete nasty chav crap. The only good Dubstep is the music that is mislabeled as Dubstep  If it wasn't so generic I'd like it but its just BWOM BWOM WOM WOM over and over. Nothing seperates it from Bassline really and thats pretty generic too.

If it wasn't so generic I'd like it but its just BWOM BWOM WOM WOM over and over. Nothing seperates it from Bassline really and thats pretty generic too.

Which is what I said in the second part of the post, and then gave some examples that aren't wom wom lfo tracks. No offense but it really irritates me when people write off a whole genre because they can't be bothered looking beyond the end of their nose, its why modern popular music is in the state it is in. 90% of any genre is generic, in fact 90% of games are generic. There is a lot that separates bassline from dubstep, ie dub. Most popular dubstep tends to be a continuation of Bassline though, just rebranded as something more fresh by Ministry of Sound in order to shift more CDs, I suspect you haven't looked beyond that sort of stuff.

Check out the artists I mentioned earlier, but more specifically:

Burial & Four Tet - Wolf Cub
Jamie Vex'd - Radiant Industry
Juedo - Joy Construction

You might not like these as there is heavy bass, but they use it excellently:

Slugabed - One of Us
Untold - Kingdom (this was one of the early tracks that influenced the whole wom wom thing, but its a completely different beast, far more dubbier)

then contrast that one to this, very versatile guy is Untold:

Untold - Sweat

They're all on youtube, so give them a listen and your opinions might be a bit more valid. I didn't like dubstep at all to begin with for the same reasons as you, but I did some research and came across the 10%.

Untold - SweatThat's actually pretty reminiscent of much, much older techstep stuff like Metalheadz. Not bad but as with much of that ilk I find I get bored pretty quickly, it's too minimal and repetitive for extended listening. That goes for most of the music in this thread, actually - lots of four on the floor, tedium to my ears.

I'll have to check them out, never been in to jungle/DnB much but as my tastes are probably the opposite to yours I may dig it. At least partly opposite, I'm not always in the mood for minimal/repetitive but it has its place.

I know , they are considered some of the "Gayest" euro dance. But I must point out, that both of them are straight. But anyway Modern Talking are at times some thing I can crazy about listening to, since their remixes which came out in the 1990´s just fits into the Euro dance genre. And as myfishbone, pointed out. Then what he meant by dance music, was the genre known as eurodance. Which later on got fused together with trance later on, and became eurotrance. But to be perfectly honest, then both genres derived from house, eurodance was just the more softer and poppier music, where trance was "harder". But I can still enjoy both genres. But if you need to differentiate between the two now a days, you need to split them up, by compilations. Since, when I was a "child" there Abosulute "lets dance" (which later on became abosulute dance) was the dancy compilation you went for, absolute music, was the more non dancy pop and rock music (and some times other kinds of genres) was what you went for. But if you wanted pure and unadulterated trance, then you want Trance Master, which a friend whom I still have contact with introduced to me.

And at the same time, the eurodance had its rave, there I still remember an awesome song by a Swedish group named One More Time coming out with a nice song named Highland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Nl8Ws6pj3M)

heck I even remember that One More Time performed in a Danish show named Eleva2eren (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0VJw55qwyI) on TV2. Yes I know Blackmores Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHHkWzWVDbc) has covered the song, but the song is written and originally performed by One More Time. Strangely enough I feel there is some "Safety Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7movKfyTBII)" over the cover.
Anyway, whether the threads starter, meant dance music, as in Eurodance, or more in what people like to dance to. Then I am not trying to mess with peoples ideas, of what their favourite dance music. Cause there was even a competing dance/electronic music compilation named Turn Up The Bass/Base, which was an alternative I also remember from back in the 90´s which had some music too. And that compilation also had other genres too on it, and not just eurodance.
