Updated the Dreamcast Gallery site, of particular interest
* Superb pictures of Partner Dreamcast
* Pearl Blue VMU
* Pearl Blue Controller - never seen proof that this controller was available outside of the Pearl Blue console pack before. This together with the Pearl White controller existing means that Sega must have sold the Pearl Pink controller by itself as well, although there are no pics of such a thing....

Thanks for the kind words. Glad to be here. I've visited Assembler for a while, just never made it to the boards.
In answer to your response, check my FAQ there. (to save you a few clicks -- I don't own all of the games, unfortunately).
And, I do remember the update (it's in the new updates section). I added a PSO V1 Promo Video GD-ROM and Super Kerien (Saturn) to the Bonus->Promo sections.

Big update:
http://www.classicgaming.com/japangaming
-New interface
-added a bunch of games to the game db
-added an FM-Towns section (9 - 10 games so far)
-added a promo jacket for "Monica no Shiro", an unreleased Saturn game by Pioneer LDC (in the promo section)
-added Dreamcast, N64, and Arcade flyer sections
-Goofed up and "took out" the video section. :( I'll get it up next week... forgot to fix the script to put them in there. When that's up, there will be some footage of an unreleased Saturn game.
Enjoy!
Also, there's some pretty big news (at least for me) on the front page. Not exactly good news actually. I'll post here for those that are too lazy to check it out:
Other news: I just got word that I will be leaving Japan this fall. This has seriously bummed me out, but I'll get over it. My office is moving. I love my job, and they pay very well considering there's a republican in the white house, so I'm definitely going with them. What does this mean for the site? Not a whole hell of a lot. I'm still in the gene pool (wife) so will be coming back for visits, and probably long-term again at one point down the road.
In the meantime, Japan will still be a huge part of my life. The site just need to switch gears. There's a lot of game data here, and I'd like to continue to add more. I think I'll just rely more on donations of scans from users (much like I do now, but a bit larger scale).
I think one of the changes will be that I'll focus more on things like translations and indepth reviews of text-heavy games. Both will prevent my Japanese from going to shit for the next few years.
Also, my in-laws still live in Japan, so I've got a place to dump the occasional oddball rarity from Yahoo Japan auctions.
just started work on a new site ........ if anyone wants to help contact me

I updated Japanese Gaming again this week.
-(Officially) posted the Atomic Runner Chelnov beta video
-20 or so Saturn games added -- enough to where they don't all fit on the "new games" sidebar, so you'll have to search
-A few new flyers. 5 or so SFC, 2 FC, and a Turbo Duo one for good measure.
I will one day, get off my ass and post the Famicom section.

Another update to Japanese Gaming (www.classicgaming.com/japangaming)
1: Started posting news tidbits in the forums. You can check the latest in any page on the site on the right-hand side of the screen.
2: Added a couple of games (nothing spectacular or rare)
3: Added about 30 or so arcade game flyers, which I shamelessly swiped from some ridiculously overpriced auctions. Who would've known that one flyer could get up to 20,000 yen.
I'm always looking to add more, so if you want to contribute, drop a line.

Just a question to you guys, what do you use to keep all your pages organized? As I keep adding game pages and other stuff for my comic and such it's hard to keep the flow of the site coherent. Any suggestions on good software or whatever?

The first one looks alot better if full screened :) I did draw it without guidelines so its no wonder its stretched ^_^ The second is supposed to be blurry too....if you read the picture description he is supposed to be surronded by fire...the blurriness was my attempt at heat blurring :)

In the spirit of the upcoming Phantasy Star Universe, I added a couple of scans from the Phantasy Star Memorial CD & Fanbook (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/book_information.cgi?&base=phantasystarmemorialanddramacdandfanbook), which I believe is the single hardest official Phantasy Star item to find. I finally gave this book some time. There's some info in there that I don't believe is out on the net. I might add some more (a translation of the interviews, perhaps) at a later date, if there's interest.
Also added the Keio Yuugekitai Settei Shiryoushuu (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/book_information.cgi?&base=keioyuugekitaisetteishiryoushuu) which contains a hidden stage (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/video_information.cgi?&base=keioyuugekitaisetteishiryoushuu) that did not appear in the original release.

I think there's two questions in your query:
1. What backend technology do people use to generate pages.
2. What tools do people use to design their pages.
To answer no. 1: people will either have static pages or have dynamically generated pages(dynamic implies the web/application server is generating the HTML for the page at the moment someone requests it). Dynamic is the best as you can change the way your website looks without changing any of the content (words, graphics etc).
Backend technology wise you can guess what people use alot of the time...
If their pages end with .htm, .html they are probably (not necessarily tho) static HTML pages - so they're not dynamic. Your pages look to fall into this camp.
If they end in cgi (Common Gateway Interface) then they will be using some kind of dynamic functionality at the back end but you can't tell for sure which - could be perl in GaijinPunch's case, or C etc......Gaijinpunch uses CGI and perl (yuuuukkkk!....:-).......only joking....)
If the pages end in .jsp then they're using Javaserver pages (Java is the language at the backend essentially).
If the pages end in .asp then they're using Microsoft IIS with ASP (Active Server Pages). The back end language is either vbscript or javascript (possibly with VB/C++ as well). I use ASP because my host only offers Microsoft technology.
If the pages end in .aspx then they're using Microsoft .NET technology. The back end language is either vbscript, javascript/jscript, VB.Net, C#, C++.NET.
If the pages end in cfm then they're using Cold Fusion - which is Altaire's product for dynamic page generation.
2. As for design tools - I use notepad for Dreamcastgallery.com.....not the best way to design pages - probably the worst!. At work I have used Photoshop, ImageReady and Dreamweaver. You can sometimes tell what people use by looking at the HTML source -the header meta tags sometimes gives it away.
Looking at Yakumo's site he has used Frontpage at sometime (or still continues to do so).
Gaijinpunch uses some kind of tool as his HTML is far too neat for hand written stuff!
Dreamcastgallery.com's HTML is written by hand as it's pretty messy...
GaijinPunch
05-22-2004, 07:13 AM
Gaijinpunch uses CGI and perl (yuuuukkkk!....:-).......only joking....)
Perl gets the job done. The best part about it -- it's the same language that I use to make my life easier at work. You don't have to learn a web-only language to make great web pages. Yeah, it's old and ugly, but it does some things better than PHP. I do wish I knew PHP, as it does a lot of things better than perl, just no time.
Gaijinpunch uses some kind of tool as his HTML is far too neat for hand written stuff!
3 tools. CSS, VI, and my hands. :smt040 For people that have no clue what that means, it means it's all done by hand. VI is the unix (superior) version of notepad, written on UNIX some 30 years ago. Don't get me wrong - there was hours and hours of trial and error to get it to look right, but as I was saying to Yakumo - once you get it coded right, that's it.
Oh, yeah -- made a small update. Added Fushigi no Dungeon to the DC section, and added two DC Magazines (the ones w/ all the VM Data on the accompanying GD-ROM) to the books section. Not a big update, as I'm guiding a mate around Tokyo at the moment.

It's actually quite easy. The whole site is made up of about 10 CGI scripts (I'm probably going to make it one big one soon). Each CGI script has a sub-routine to write out the top, left, and right side of the page. The only thing unique to each script is the middle part of the page, and a lot of the pages are very similar - only requiring a minor tweak.
So, I can't take all the credit -- the script does most of the writing for me.

Very, very cool site Mika-L.
One thing though:
The Pearl Pink, Pearl Blue, Black and Silver were all part of the same production round. Each version limited to 200 units and only made available through D-Direct with a batch of each released over a series of months, these are very hard to find and often fetch a very high price.
This is not entirely true. The Super Black Model Dreamcast was originally one of these "you can buy one of you win the drawing" DCs. Basically, it was a raffle, but you won the right to buy the model. The initial run was a very limited number (200 I believe). I guess they had so many people enter, they had a questionairre, asking if people would buy them if they made another run. They said they'd produce more if they got enough pre-paid orders. The did, and they did. There were several thousand more made.
The Pearl series are also not limited to 200 each. I do not recall the number, but it's definitely not 200.

All TecToy consoles are called clones on your site, but they are licensed SEGA consoles. TecToy is like a SEGA of Brazil (it was called like this years ago on SOA's web site).

Yeah, they are "licensed clones." I put them in the "Other clones" catagory becasue I think it would be redundant to put them right under the console's main entry. I try not to put the original forgien release of a console up unless it's somehow different from the domestic (domestic in this case being the USA version. I know that the world doesn't revolve around my country, but it's where I live so...) Maybe after I've got all the pages up and updated (which will be some time next year by this rate) I'll organize them into official and unofficial clones.

Oh yes, point me in the right direction for data saves :smt024 I hope to build the biggest archive on the net for Dreamcast saves. Got quite a few of my own which need to be added from games such as Border Down, Shirigami No Shiro II and others.

Nice Update.
A couple of things I noticed.
Controllers
-----------
Dotted is actually called Carbon (same w/ VMU)
Pink = I believe this is called Clear Pink, no?
In one of my saturn mags, it's got some concept red & blue controllers -- just like the orange ones, and it looks like they were sitting right next to the ornage ones when their pictures were taken. :)

Brilliant - a sensible translation...I'll change the site to reflect this...thanks
>>Pink = I believe this is called Clear Pink, no?
Yip, you're right!...I should rename all these 'clear' controllers to clear...never spotted that one
>>it's got some concept red & blue controllers -- just like the orange ones,

Ahh!!...I've only got two pics of the red one and a corner of the blue one.....don't suppose you'd scan it in and put it on your site (or send to me to DCgallery)?

>>I notice you don't have a PSO VMU up there. ;)
I have this one:
http://www.dreamcastgallery.com/dc/gallery.asp?selected_vmu_id=253
Or is there an actual VMU (Visual) PSO perhaps?...
GaijinPunch

Oops... I guess you do have the PSO VMU up there. :)
I saw you have a couple of pictures of a STARS DC up there... what kind of pics would you be interested in. I'm not opposed to it, it's just one more thing I have to do. Considering the care I have to take when photographing it, it'll take a bit of time out of the day. :)
The only other oddball hardware DC thing I have that I can think of is a Black BBA... never knew they existed until recently, and of course, picked it up.

So now it collaspes depending on the browser's window size, and I've got a little javascript thing in the middle. Still will be tweaking the look, but I think I've finally got the functionality down (as in nothing being cut off with lower resolutions.)

Bad news folks, I've hit the limit on my space (100 MB) so there won't be any significant updates for a while. I've got to go through and optimise all my images (which I should have done in the first place, but whatever.)
So for a while I'll just be doing that, streamlining things, taking off stuff I don't need, etc. New shit might be a little sparse for the time being, but when I do update with new stuff I'll post here.
Have managed to throw up a new famiclone:

W0000T! I'll get on it! I was pretty puzzled trying to work together the small portion of the official devkit that someone on the board sent me once... how do you actually test your demos? Psy-Q would only link to some weird format called S28 I think.

I test my demos using gensKmod or kega :smt023 .
If youre rich you can test with tototek on real hardware
I was pretty puzzled trying to work together th
Nah, never use old tools (they are generaly hard to use + low optimisation + odd output rom format), just use devster's wmarsx or/and GCC.
Btw: My tech demos about the 32x only uses the 68k (the 2 sh2 are looping forever leaving the cartridge acces), all is done from the genesis.
In fact the 32x isn't very interesting (compared to the genesis) because you need to do all the stuff by software (the 32x vdp is only a framebuffer). If you want to make a litte game you'll need to use the sh2's but its very very hard to build a game using 3 procs at once :smt043
My advice would be to make genny games, 32x games are for gurus (if youre one, sorry :smt083 ).
Or, if you really want to use the 32x vdp, you may use the 32x vdp for static 256colors BG and the genesis for sprites/ FG planes).

As you are aware we had to rebuild our linux hosting infrastructure to close many security holes. Since that time we have discovered additional vulnerabilities via CGIs on some sites. For this reason we have been forced to disable cgi function on all sites.
We understand this may break application functionality on some sites, but security and reliability are paramount.
To replace CGIs we would like to recommend PHP, which continues to be fully supported on the dynamic servers.
In addition, we will be looking forthwith into providing some CGIs, such as formmail, which will be acceptable in the security profile of our servers.

The data is in a database, and has been for a while. It's the requirement to learn php that's going to take a while.... added to my enthusiasm and whatnot just delays it.
Anyways, I read a few PHP for morons pages and it's pretty much Perl with a few syntax changes. In fact, it's so much like Perl, I'm wondering WTF they even made it.

Did a lot of work on the site, but most of it behind the scenes. Three areas of the bonus section are up. The links, updates (whoopee) and the unreleased section. Slowly but surely, the other areas will come back to life, with some new content hopefully.

Maybe it explains why they never bothered with transparencies on the Saturn version or why the Japanese version has such a strange title with Tunnel B-1 being more of a sub title.

Actually they answered the latter.
And btw can you mention ANY 3rd party game out of 1996 that did good transparent effects on Saturn? It took untill games like Sonic R, Shining Force 3 and PDS for decent effects in 3d games.

The flyers, wallpaper, and videos section are all now online. I guess the frontpage would be a good choice for the next portion to revive.
