Can anyone tell me if and how this would work:

I know Game Gear games wouldn't work on the Master System due to their larger colour palette, however...a few GG games such as Castle of Illusion & Prince of Persia are direct ports (colours and all) of the SMS versions as described at about 4.40 here on a video of my modified GG:

If you could adapt a GG cart to either fit onto an SMS card or SMS card, it stands to reason these games should play fine.

Could it be done? Would it work?

very few titles will work, but the rest will not work.

Ah so a few games such as Castle of Illusion would work. Anyone know the best way of getting the board from a GG cart to fit into an SMS?

GG games like Castle of Illusion and Prince of Persia will play fine on a sms if yuou build a cart converter. But there is no point, as the GG carts contain the exact same game as the easily available sms ones. These games play scaled down on the GG, just as if you were playing the sms carts using a conveter on it.

Yeah I suppose they are just 're-packaged' SMS games, it would stil be cool to built a converter to play these few GG games on an SMS. I may try one day :)

so, in vice versa, can SMS games work on a GG if you had a converter?

Yes, but that's different since the GG was designed to retain compatibility for SMS games. There's an official converter called the Master Gear.

These days? eBay. Not terribly expensive if memory serves as they're basically, iirc, a PCB acting as an adapter.

I suppose one could make a pass through device to play any GameGear game on the SMS but you'd have to do a lot of work to make it compatible on a game by game basis negating any possible usefulness it would have. Might as well stick with emulation or playing the games on their respective platforms.

I have a diagram for one on a disc somewhere, along with a diagram for a pad port, from when I built my SMS/GG hybrid thing a few years back. I'll have a look for them when I get a minute and post them here if I find them.

As already mentioned though, it's pretty pointless :-).

Maybe you could hack apart a SMS and GameGear to put the GameGear internals into a SMS to have a SMS that with an adapter would also play GameGear games? Afterall, if you can stick a 32X into a MegaDrive II, why not see about sticking a GameGear into a SMS case. Though I'm not sure how the GameGear outputs video.

I have a game gear with busted screen and that's exactly what I intend to do with it.

Oh and it will output the video to normal TV.
