Quick question, I have got a 60GB (PS2 compatible) PS3 for next to nothing that has all the hallmarks of the generic YROD problem. My question is if you actually need to do the reflow fix, or just re-do the thermal paste. I don't want to buy a heat gun or bake the motherboard in the oven for 2 hours if I just need to replace the thermal paste.

PS3 YROD = 360 RROD

Reflow/Reball is the only way to properly fix.

Send to service for repair.

At least for SCEE they get you back the same console you send in, i.e. send in 60G BC PS3 and get back a 60G BC PS3.

A reflow is only a temporary fix, you'll get the YLOD back after (max.) some months (talking about 1 or 2).
Your best bet is to do a complete BGA rework on the chips with soder which contains silicone to get rid of the YLOD (usually forever).

my 360 launch unit had a rod after 2 years. i fixed it with xclampfix + reflowed and its still working (my jtag today ^^). while reflowing can work out pretty good the reballing is the better method

The numpty I bought it off tried opening it, he broke the warranty seal, didn't have a torx screwdriver and basically ripped the top (transparent) case off. I doubt Sony would touch it.

YLOD is a generic error. The PS3 do not output any useful information about what's wrong.

Basically it's the Syscon chip telling something gone terribly wrong and it gave up from bringing the system up.

Could be anything from the GPU solders being broken to empty or corrupted flash. (Obviously going through power regulator circuitry faults)

Of course, the real error code can be obtained from test points on the motherboard.

Transparent case?

I've never seen that on a retail unit. Only a prototype, pre-release TEST unit.

you will always get what you send in if you dont then just ring them back and tell them you want a 60gb model as you playstation 2 games
i did a swap for my brother saying a 60gb was faulty and i give them a 80gb non bc and he had a 60gb bc back it was cool

Not that transparent, but it is ! Much like original SIXAXIS controller.

I actually have one of these that is a Test unit and does have the YLOD. Someday I would like to get that fixed since it has a really old firmware version loaded to it (1.02 I think). But of course you can't send that in to Sony and expect to get the same one back.

I think that If It have still valid then Replace it and get new inplace of it. So It would e work more than previously. I know that It would be little hard to get it. I hope that You will find better way for it.

Yeah. You could also completely ignore the entire thread and fail to notice he already posted the warranty seal is long gone.
