View Full Version : Trespasser Beta 96 (Pine Valley) release

After much waiting, it's finally released.
Trespasser was supposed to be a revolutionary game that
featured real physics based puzzles. Advanced creature
A.I. and highly detailed environments.
The game was not given enough time to be polished,
the demo and feature level pine valley was cut and
though to be lost.
The game was a colossal failure, and was derided as being
a bit of a joke. Those who played the game with patience
saw the potential in the game and with some patience it
was an enjoyable game.
The game directly influenced many other games, most notably
the gravity gun in Half-life 2.
Beta 96 features the lost level and has marked differences
from the final game.

What sort of specs are recommended for the game?
That's weird I ran the retail on my older AMD Athlon 64 x2 @ 3.2ghz maybe the beta requires intel? I'll download it later when i'm not on my mac. :110:

Guys don't expect to run this on your PCs.Even if you do it's going to be a bugfest and going to have incompatibilities with your OS.
I suggest you use virtual PC or real old Hardware with Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed.

I was running the retail on windows 7 fine in compat mode.. no problems :)
I downloaded all parts, but when is extracting a error appeared saying, the file is corrupted, is the part 000 with right size?, because is just only 0,1kb, and when I try to open this file, the same error, corrupted.

There's an AMD-optimized excutable on the disc, at least on the retail version there is, try using it instead. I think it's called TrespassK6.exe or something like that.
And I've tried Tres on Vista64 without problems, don't remember if I tried the Beta though (it wasn't my computer).

I didn't see this posted. If you want to know more about the disaster that was this game's development, here's the post mortem article.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3339/postmortem_dreamworks_.php
Also if you want to run the full final game on modern hardware, you probably want to get ATX. This will also fix the stupid issue with the game requiring Intel hardware.

You are amazingly stupid if you think the i7 is actually a better deal for the money. Have fun spending hundreds more for an i7 rig that honestly isn't that much faster than an overclocked Phenom II.

The game didn't work at first, then I installed windows 7,still didn't,wasn't too pissed though, because I found out on the ISO (In my case the CD since I burned it) the tpassp5 file let me play,so I put it into the trespasser folder, then made a shortcut, now it works!

Hmmm... could you check what version it is that you got? Original retail version is 1.0.116.0, demo/non-English/patched version is 1.0.117.0, and the one ASSEMbler got is 1.0.96.0. It would be interesting if yours is a different one...

Trespasser Beta 96 isn't a build from 1996. It's actually the 96th compiled build of Trespasser. The final version is build 116 and the version 1.1 patch is 117. However, there are enough differences in beta 96 to make it worth checking out. Including a completely different model for Anne and many other things not found in the final version.

Can You Link Me to a Download of the Beta? Unfortunately no, we can't. You see, we at Trescom have a strict policy not to post downloads to the Trespasser Final and Beta. While it's unlikely that Electronic Arts gives a crap about Trespasser being how it did back in 1998, we don't want to take any chances of potential lawsuits or anything that would get Trescom shut down. However, this series of articles is perfectly okay because we aren't providing a download. You'll have to hunt down the beta yourself via Google search. =)
I don't like playing the game in the beta engine. Can I use the final game instead? Yes you can. However, some objects may have issues appearing in the final version's engine and ATX patch engine. These objects are mainly one with different vertices than the final game uses. One example is the Parasaurolophus in the Town level. It uses a much older base model with difference vertices that the final version isn't compatible with. As a result, the skeleton and collision boxes walk around without the skin on them making the dinosaur invisible in the final. This Para also can attack the player which makes it even more threatening.
Fortunately, you can use the "BONES" cheat to locate the skeleton and collision boxes and see where it is. Also, the T-Rexes nearby will attack it causing blood to fly as well. Good indication of where it is.
Another thing you will need to do is port over the beta's TPAs as it uses several ones missing or replaced in the final version's .TPA file.
The beta engine is crashing in software mode! What's wrong? It seems the beta engine is highly unstable in software mode. I think I tested this once. It seems Software mode crashes after a certain amount of time without warning using the Beta's EXE. Primary Display mode is more stable and crashes less. Try that if Software is constantly crashing on you. Just keep in mind that depending upon your computer primary display mode may cause choppiness in the game. Laptops especially have this problem in this day in age. Most desktops are fast enough to Run Trespasser at full speed in Primary display mode, or at least close to it anyway. If all else fails, use the final version's EXE instead.
Note added by TresCom: Remember that modern computers is not supported by Trespasser, even more likely that they are unsupported by beta 96. If you try to play the game on an older computer, you might experience less crashes. We have had reports that some people experience a lot of crashes, while some don't experience many or even none, it all depends on your computer. What is this "Stegoland" you refer to many times in your articles? Stegoland refers to a massive bug in beta 96 that tends to teleport objects across the map for no reason, often teleporting them out of bounds. This bug can even teleport the player out of bounds as well, usually killing them. The bug got its name due to it first being encountered happening to a Stegosaurus in Jungle Road by Draconisaurus and Mickey. I was there too but didn't really give a crap about "Stegoland" at the time.
The Stegosaurus was teleported to some random spot out of bounds. However, Stegosaurus isn't the only object or animal affected by this. In fact, it can happen to anyone or anything. It should also be noted the bug may not always teleport out of bounds. Sometimes it may teleport the object a few feet away from where it was previously. It can also occasionally teleport two objects out of bounds at once. One time, I was fighting a Raptor and we both were teleported out of bounds for no reason and still fighting. I'll try to note specific places and objects known to cause this glitch in my articles. However, be aware that there may be more than I know about.

How are you extracting the files? You need smart par or similar to piece it together.

Sorry to revive this thread but the Torrent isn't being seeded anymore. Also, yes the post above is the Trespasser Source Code. There's also a few other Trespasser goodies out there now as well such as the GUI app and design documents.
Also, for those of you having issues running the game, I suggest you try using Setup 95 first if you haven't already. If all else fails, use the retail engine or the ATX patch. Some of the features in the prototype engine may not work but you can run the game okay. Also, it seems the game can crash more frequently in Software in the prototype engine, go to the video options and change to Primary Display mode. (choose video driver button above the resolution selection.) Now this might not help some but I've tested it out myself and it works okay.
A benefit to using the retail engine or ATX patch engine is that the game engine is a little bit more stable. Though the drawback is some things may not work right. Also, there is a Parasaurolophus in Ingen Town that will be invisible in the ATX and Retail engines so beware. Also, this para will attack the player upon sight, so watch out.
Video of Para attacking in the prototype engine:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKzjt00Zs7Q
A fun note is that it turns out this para can attack you in the final version of the level as well. You just rarely get to see it in the final because the Rexes are usually trying to kill it. It's also anchored to stay near a specific tree.
