I know a lot of people have heard of this game. I came across a beta of it,
and I'm trying to see if people are interested enough in the game to obtain the beta.

Oh wow that should be REALLY interesting.Trespasser was a game with a lot of potential and in the end a huge amount of stuff was cut.
Though I'm pretty sure it's going to crash every 5 minutes :P
haha, i remember playing that. technically pretty cool.. but controlling the arm didn't really work out that well in the game. and the LODing was amazing xD

Yeah the game sucked but it's pretty impressive for its time,it had a vast free enviroment, meaning you could go anywhere, and also featured a full physics engine.Unfortunately the game was bland and much too power consuming.Heck I installed recently on a Pentium 3 at 500 Mhz with a Voodoo 3 card and it's still kinda slow at times which is inexcusable.

If it has much of the cut content left in (obviously unplayable) - there was a whole level cut (by far the most ambitious) I'd definitely be interested in it.

Sounds great, there's a lot of Trespasser fans out there.
Interesting point, Gabe Newell of Valve software and Half Life fame was impressed with the physics system (ambition not neccessarily how it was implemented), and new it would be a big part in the future of gaming. Which in part inspired all the gravity manipulation in Half Life 2.

All credit to the designers for trying to make the game more intuitive in removing the traditional HUD. However whoever had the idea of checking your health by looking down at your cleavage and checking a tattoo of your heart must have been drinking that day....

NOW I recognize this game. This topic really shoulda said Jurassic Park SOMEWHERE XD Those physcs look so laughable though, the dinosaurs move sideways and all over the place, they look like they're drunk!
So is this gonna be a free release, community effort(aka donations), just videos of it once you get it or what?
I was gonna post about it on the Trescom forums too just to get more people interested in case it needs donations. Too bad they seem to wanna appear elitist or something by not letting anyone in? Yeah they really just tried to much with this game. Deciding to use Procedural Physics for the dinosaur animation looks good until it freaks out after 5 seconds and the velociraptors take a dirt nap. I've always liked the way she counts the bullets though...it's surprisingly immersive and really tried a lot of things that are standards now. Also the game has REALLY strange Easter Eggs...Like the monolith from 2001 and a secret invisible walkway in the last level.

The reason for the crappy registration was continued harassment by spammers. But I've posted a thread in the moderators forum asking automated registration to be enabled again, we've moved from our old host (IGN) so maybe the spam will no longer be a problem. Anyway, I apologize for the inconvenience. We try to be an open, inviting community.
On topic: aaah, the elusive Trespasser Beta :love2:. Other than a few screenshots from an ancient event (E3 probably) little is known about it (hype excluded). I'd be most interested to play with it!
A few years ago someone leaked a development version of the game to us, which included some GUI framework and some build-in debugging tools. Irrc, it didn't not include any data and was compatible with the retail game content. I will look it up and give you guys a linkie so you can check it out. That would be a nice trade. :)

We have the same problem. I do all moderation manually. It's laborious.

I can't even figure out how to get the game to run, maybe you can help.
It wants glide drivers to run. Trespasser was originally written to use a software engine, hardware support was added late in development. You can try to run it in software mode. Or perhaps there are some glide-driver emulators around, I wouldn't be surprised if there are.
I probably can't tell more until I get hands-on. I'm actually a graphics programmer, so you're in good company. :)

Some info on the numbers you see there:
1st image: "96", probably an internal build number, and thus an older version.
2nd image: note "116c", this is probably a 'release candidate'. The retail build is 116 (the CD label in fact is "Trespass_UK_116" on my disk). The date seems to back this up. So, I would expect to find a version of the game on that disk that isn't dissimilar from the retail version. To be sure, check the executable version via file properties (my unpatched retail version is "1.0.116.0").
3rd image: Date seems close to the disk in 2nd image. Not sure why it is labeled "beta 4". I will check the credits listing to see what the initials could possibly stand for.
Could you perhaps tell me more about the origin of these disks? If it's private in nature, feel free to PM me or contact per email (martijn AT bytehazard DOT com).

I'm talking about the dreamcast version. I'm fairly sure that's not even remotely accurate. Platforms other than PC were never even considered for Trespasser. Somebody probably mixed something up. Maybe a crazy cowboy riding pre-release hype.
Nice vid. Could you check this: At the main menu, hold [Ctrl] + [Shift] + Q + W keys, then release W. You should see a list of levels. Is there anything in this list with "pv"; in the name? This was supposedly the "Pine Valley" level, which had a lot of physics based puzzles. It was cut from the retail game and recycled as the demo.
I'm not surprised it crashes a lot. The debug build I have does that a lot too. Running everything in software mode + win95/98 compatibility mode + 16-bit display settings seem to make it a bit more reliable.

The test level is in the release build yes, and it looks pretty much identical, with the only thing missing is a human head on a rusty barrel. It has the face of a developer on it, I guess it was sneaked in just before the release and not in the beta builds.
From what I've seen so far, the most significant differences seem to be the presence of the Pine Valley level and a different texture and position of the tattoo on Anne. But, I guess, the games performance, bugs and creature behavior is something hard to judge from this material.
Unrelated material to trespasser just something from EA.
But EA never developed anything for the Dreamcast. I'm not surprised the disc face is blank, It mirrors their output.

The trescom guys have proposed splitting the cost of the betas, however
they are more strict about piracy than we are due to the close relationship
they have with the programmers.
They propose only distributing to people who own an original version of the game.
They have some sort of app that they use to prove this.
While noble, it's near impossible to get trespasser.
So we need to raise the cash ourselves to torrent it or split the
costs with trescom, but they have their noble prerequisites
for distribution.

Hello! I'm the head of the TresCom Web Department.
A CD Check would be useless anyway since you can get around it by using a not so legal copy of the game anyway. The latest version of the ATX engine patch recently removed this restriction as well. The original idea behind it was to prevent people who didn't own the game from getting retail Trespasser assets.
I'll be sure to let you guys know when MP gets the betas up. Thanks for letting us know that you acquired them, we're sure to spend a long time going over the files with a fine toothed comb and compare them to the retail. I'm personally going to play PV as soon as possible since that level was the thing that initially led me to the Diehard Forums in 2001 that eventually became TresCom.
For anyone interested, I put together a quick table comparing the sizes of the various level files between the retail and beta:

Big Red is planning on creating a patch to make the beta more stable. He says that ATX will not work on the beta exe since the exe would likely be very different from the release version (which was created on 10/6/1998). Just to let you know before you try to install it on the beta exe. MP is currently ironing out the details on how to distribute. He hopes to have things ready by Monday.

I will add that the discussion is ongoing so details might change. MP is the one who will make the final decisions about this. I can't guarantee anything at this point other than we will distribute. When and how may change at any time.
Patience is a virtue to everyone waiting :) I suggest you guys find a way to get the retail game (There are various ways) and play through it so you can get an accurate comparison later. Should keep you preoccupied for a while at least. It will also give you guys some practice with the complicated control scheme.

The original US/UK releases in English are version 1.1.6, the patch brings them up to 1.1.7, but both the German and Spanish versions are 1.1.7 out of the box, as well as the demo (that being the reason there is no patch for those versions, I guess).
Hmmm... I wonder if this means it was also released in French, Japanese and Chinese (languages mentioned in the manual), too. Would be interesting to track them all down.
Time to 'scan' your 'horizons'. I dropped the 'anchor' at 'the bay'. Wink wink nudge nudge. ;-)
