Thats right, when you become 1 year older then this is the place to post.

Today I turned 29 and to be honest it doesn't seem that long ago when I first really started getting in to games with my Master System back in 1986 (I think). I do feel a little odd going to arcades now. Not because I look the oldest but because I am actually old to be playing games in the eyes of many westerners. But you know what? I don't give a shit :-D Keep those games goming until I'm 6ft under I say :smt023

Well, I guess I shouldn't be bitching that much... I turned 21 two days ago, the 19th, but I still feel rather old - plus there's the whole, "I've been around over two damn decades and have shit to show for it!" thing as well..

Anyways, happy birthday to you, Yceman, and Anti as well (I believe)!! Everyone have an awesome day, bottoms up :drinkers: and remember, Guinness tastes like shit!! (birthday story for another day)

Happy birthday Yakumo. :smt023

It may sound stupid, but sometimes i feel old myself too (and i'm only 23). Here in Brazil most people think i'm too old for playing games, but most of my friends don't think there's a problem with that.

Even my girlfriend like games, so that's ok.

This "too old for games" thing is a concept that I believe is quickly dying. What are you supposed to do, sit there and watch vapid sitcoms and "reality" TV? I'd think a good number of the people who'd say those sorts of things do just that. So fuck 'em. :smt045

Damn straight it does, and I should know - look at my location! Though you yanks are weird and get in bottles (well, from what I've seen on TV anyway). We get Guiness in cans and draught for that authentic shitness.

And you guys are great - you make me feel so not old! I'm only 19, but usually I feel so decrepit, seeing all these 10-year-old kids with their own mobile phones, their own 21" TVs and DVD players (when I was 10 most my friends where still living with their parents' old black & white portable, and a crappy top-loading VCR, IF YOU'RE LUCKY!), and not forgetting all the new crappy kids' fads like Beyblade and Yugioh and all that other crap. When I was a kid, all we had were marbles... then Pogs... *then* Tamagotchi...

Guiness is stout! Stout that's BLACK LIKE THE DEPTHS OF HELL. I usually only drink beer (especially Erdinger!), but being in silly student land I occasionally try other things. For example, last year when I got my exam results, me and my classmate tried Sunny D with really cheap vodka.

It tasted... erm... different.

Guinness was just too damn bitter... but then again, I suppose I'm not much of an alcohol person. A friend had me try a few things of his, and I discovered that Bailey's Irish Creme smells like turpentine and tastes like horribly foul cherry cough syrup, and his expensive brandy set my mouth and tongue on fire in a most unpleasent way.

I have found Sapporo to be rather agreeable in small doses, however, and maybe next weekend I'll do a bit more taste testing, but as I thought before I was 21, the whole consumption-of-alcohol thing is highly overrated. :smt009

If you want something easy to start with, I'd go with the "normal" beer (what they call "lager" in the UK) - Budweiser, Karlsberg, or a personal favourite, Grolsch. It's what I like most, I'm more of a beer person when it comes to drinking :-)
But if you feel like trying something stronger, I think wine is pleasant when you get through the initial phase of disgust :smt042
And here in Holland we have stuff called "Coebergh", it's liquor made of cherries (ABV of 20%), but it tastes just like lemonade... imagine the danger!

Yes, beer is probably the easiest to start off on then move on to the more "heavier" drinks such as cider then move on to the spirits. In Japan I mostly drink beer (Kirin Larger beer :smt042 great name. It's like they didn't know whether to follow the British English name or the US name) and Chu-Hi. Chu-Hi is best described as a spirits based fruit drink. These can be quite strong. The average is about 7.5% alcohol. Anyone who comes to Japan should try them. There are many varieties to choose from. My personal favourite is Lime and Lemon vodka based Chu-Hi. Two glasses of that stuff and you're lucky to stand up without your head spinning.

Aren't "they" bringing out some law to prevent American "beer" being sold as "beer" and having to market it as "lager" which is what it is. Real beer, is flat (non fizzy) and from a cask drawn from a manual (as opposed to gas powered) python (pump).

I think the law also prevents the American "Budweiser" company using that name as it's owned/patented/etc elsewhere (in Bavaria or something)

I used to be a bar manager.

Ah, Kirin, the great stuff they sell in those pimpy 1 liter beer cans :-D
I brought one of those home on the plane to put on my "uncommon beer bottles" shelf :-p
And I drank some of the Chu-hi in Japan, but that was the night that I fell asleep on the street in Roppongi, coincidence? :smt042

I'm not a huge fan of beer/lager or whatever you call it, but I like it. Actually, I like the kind that is sold here in Brasil (I don't know what's the technical name for it), specially if it's very cold. It seems that in Europe people like to drink it warm, huh? I can't even imagine how bad it must taste :-D
Anyway, I also like bourbon and vodka, specially if they're both really cold :-D

Nah good beer has to be (ice) cold! Although my dad (who is from the US, btw) has stated that "real lovers of beer will also like it when warm" :smt043

Kirin is good, you say Yakumo? Although I haven't been in any liquor stores yet, the local supermarkets only really have Sapporo and Kirin as far as Japanese beers go (and some stuff called Red Owl rice cider :smt043 ) and was thinking of giving Kirin a go this next weekend.

And the reason I haven't tried Budweiser, Coors, PBR, or any of the other American brews is that everyone says that compared to imports, the stuff is awful, and as the stuff is all rather bitter anyways, I definately don't want to dive into the drinks regarded as crap by people with tolerances. :smt043

Red wine I've actually had before, and don't mind that much - the problem there is finding which one is a good buy. :smt009

Fosters, Heineken, Hefeweisen, and Corona are all fairly lauded here - anyone have any recommendations or warnings on those?

AntiPasta
11-24-2004, 04:55 AM
I don't like Heineken, it's odd that of all Dutch beers it is the most exported. Oh and consider yourself lucky that you can buy Japanese beer in supermarkets, in this country the only place to get it is in restaurants at 3e a bottle :angry

Kirin is good, you say Yakumo? yeah, Kirin used to be the No.1 beer in Japan until Asahi took over. I personaly like Kirin over Asahi though. There are many types of Kirin beer. There's the Classic in a goldish can and the standard cheaper Lager/Beer in a white can. There are also many different "seasonal types too" such as this on in my fridge right now.
http://img117.exs.cx/img117/4981/beer2.jpg
This beer is very light so it should be quite easy to drink.

Irish cream is even more of an acquired taste than Guinness! It's bearable if you have it with something else, but on its own it's ass. I'm not really a spirits person myself.

I have found Sapporo to be rather agreeable in small doses, however, and maybe next weekend I'll do a bit more taste testing, but as I thought before I was 21, the whole consumption-of-alcohol thing is highly overrated. :smt009
*Legally* the age limit here is 18, but it's *socially* acceptable at 12-14 - though it may not be a thing you'd want your parents to know. I am talking about Ireland here! I didn't really drink that much until I was 17, though - I got away with using my brother's ID (who was 20 at the time) quite a few times!

Now I'm in college though, and there's three bars - on campus! God knows who made that legal!

I don't think American beers are that bad - I quite like Miller and Coors Light, anyway. Though the ones we get here aren't really American - they're usually brewed in the UK or Ireland, so they might be a bit different. I'd also recommend Erdinger - it's quite different to anything else I've tried - a GOOD different - though it's €4 a pint here (and sometimes that's only a half-litre when they use the proper Erdinger glasses), and the bars in my college are possibly the only places in this country who have it on draught.

I don't think Cider isn't really a "heavier" drink, but it's a lot sweeter than any lagers so you'll probably end up drinking more! I used to drink Bulmers (it's called Magners in the UK) all the time, but I'd always be sick the next day even after 3 or 4 pints!

Never really thought of trying Japanese beer myself - never even tried looking for it, but there's more than enough off-licenses in this town to sell some!
