I have had a few OK deals, which include:

-New PAL Saturn for A$50

-New PAL Saturn for A$50 but it was a UK import so it had the excellent officical RGB SCART cable, I only bought it for that cable so I got the system as a bonus. :)

-Mario RPG SNES (mint) US$30

-Metal Slug SS (missing obi card) US$30

-Hyper Duel SS (mint and complete) US$49

-Panzer Dragoon Saga SS PAL (mint) for A$60

-Chrono Trigger SNES (mint but missing map) US$30

-Kingdom Grandpix SS sealed US$40

-traded a spare copy of M vs SF SS for Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Delux Pack plus and Fatal Fury 3, I mainly wanted the first two so the third was a bonus even if it is not very good.

Cheers

I (once) bought an U64 board + devkit (2.0I manuals + 2.0K OS) from someone over at www.nekochan.net (which afterwards turned out to be just partially working) for $300 included shipping from US to italy.
Still wondering today why i did that after all... :angry
A while after that, i reposted another "wanted" for an U64 board, and got in contact with a japanese guy who said there was one in akihabara...and you could get it for like 5$.... :smt082 of course, there was a high probability that the board could have been fried, broken....but i thought, wtf, it's 5$ for the board + $10 for the guy + $10 for the shipment (which makes me thinking again about why i oh just why accepted to let me ship a _non working_ u64 bard for like $100 from US.. :smt022, but i guess faults are here to let you learn from them... ), and got him to buy it...
well, i tried it today and (WOW) it W-O-R-K-S flawless! once i'llget to know how to set up NFS so that it works i'll post some screens :-D

And now a PAL one too, complete near mint in trade for my SNES backup unit

My best score is probably a white Japanese Sega Saturn, with two controllers, a V-Saturn controller, a stepdown convertor and an original sega VCD card for $20Aus. I couldn't give the bloke my money quick enough when he told me how much he wanted.

I also found a boxed complete with map Phantasy Star Gaiden for Gamegear for $10 Aus. I only bought it because I'd have a hunch that it'd be worth a bit on eBay. Ended up selling it for $75Aus.

A few things. One I do web work so I have it set up as a web server. Also since it can take up to 4 gigs ram Microsofts virtual machine runs well on it with 2000 so I can create virtual machines fo all my enviroments and run multiples at the same time. Sadly a lot of name brand PC’s don’t POST (power on self test) to the standards of custom built machines (eg. Beeps . The best thing to do would be to call Dell technical support, or search around on the dell forums.

i really raped the shit out of the gamerush $5 sale. got about a dozen psp games for $5 each. that is it lately. thrift shop finds include:

little samson $1
dragon warrior 2 $1
l'emperor $2

probably some others. This is nothing but really these finds are nothing. check the gametz.com "find of the week" thread or the cheapassgamer braggin rights forum to see some real finds. (fools brag about the garage sale finds and getting a boxed toploader for 3 bucks with rob the video robot with all his parts and similar finds)

your best bet at finding junk in the wild: garage sales, thrift shops, clearance/closeouts/goin out of business sales)

there you can really get away with murder.

Considering they cost $30-$50 for used ones, I came out okay. About $10 each after chucking two of them, and adding on ridiculous shipping to the island.

Let's see...

I got all my DC VMUs for free because the people would take them to Gamestop for cash, but Gamestop had stopped taking DC stuff. I graciously took them off their hands.

Then I got a 32X for $5 from a guy who needed quick cash. I got a Genesis I found in the trash at work, with hookups! Customers who came into Gamestop would just give me systems after I told them I needed the hookups with the trade in, which of course they forgot. I got a DC and two N64s this way.

I got a Game Boy Pocket, in really good condition, for 50 cents from a guy who just wanted something for it (Gamestop no longer took them). I got a Game Boy Camera and Printer from some dude who was just going to throw them away after I told him he would receive $2 credit for them.

As for games, I bartered constantly at Gamestop with customers who were only going to get jack for their games. I'd often give them a dollar over the trade-in price in cash for the ones I wanted. I got a couple of Saturn and Sega CD games by offering $1 to people who brought them in.

I took a lot of controllers out of the trash at Gamestop and fixed them up. I got a lot of strategy guides when they "pennied out" at Gamestop as well.

So I guess Gamestop has given me a lot of great deals, just not the way they'd like it. Thank God my boss was really lenient on us and let us do stuff like this. ^_^;;

My legs party 3do beta came in the same case as another 3do jap photo cd. I did pay quite a bit for the one game/photo cd, but the regular version of that legs party game sells for a bloody fortune, so I reckon I came off quite well. Score! I also got a 3do majhong game that was very rare quite cheap, simply because it came up wrong on the till! It was priced at 18000 yen and it came up on the till as 6000 ish. Lucky I was buying a huge pile of games otherwise they might have noticed.

Other than that traditional Japan priced stuff like-
3DO, arcade stick, VCD card all boxed for 3700 ish yen.
White saturn, memory card, 3d controller and extra controller, all white and boxed for under 3000 yen. I wan't going to get in originally as I was carrying so much stuff already, but I thought - oh what the hell!

I needed a controller port for a PS2 and some parts for my saturn debug yesterday, so i went down to the local indy shop and told him what i needed. He said he'd just sell me a PS2 unit with a bad laser. He threw in a saturn that didn't work for free. Grand total: 15 bucks. I got home and tested the PS2, it's beat all to hell, but it works fine. The saturn just had a loose ribbon cable, after i plugged that in it worked fine. So i walked away with a saturn and a PS2 for $15.

I think the best deals I ever got were courtesy of this website called "Pointclick" back in the late 90's. They used to pay you a fraction of a cent or something like that for each time you clicked on one of the links on their website which you could cash in for gift certificates and such. I ended up using a macro program and just making it go through and click all the links while I slept. After about a month I had enough points to get myself $200 in Toys'R'Us bucks (which bought me a brand spankin' new Sony Playstation) and also got me a new motherboard and processor from some online computer store.

Just picked up a Gamecube for $12.50... sold as non-working because the power button was stuck down and couldn't power up anymore. Previous owned must have had some pretty grubby little kids, the power button had a ring of what appeared to be raspberry lollypop goo around it. 1 Q-tip, a little rubbing alcohol, and 5 minutes later I now have a perfectly good working Gamecube. Went out to Gamestop and bought a used copy of Pikmin, and I must say, it is one of the most incredibly addictive games I think I have ever played.

A few weeks back I got a free Marty 2 console. Cosmetically flawless, with all the leads etc, just no box. Thing was the cd bit didn't work, hence the reason it was free.

Now I know nothing about electronics whatsoever, but opened it up all the same, just in case. First thing I see is that a wire/plug from the cd lid (presumably telling the system the cd tray is closed and ready for eye killing laser action) has come a little loose. A quick push down, a tiny click is heard, and a free mint fully working Marty 2 is mine:)

As far as actual purchases and trades go:
I purchased a mint/complete Blast Wind for Sega Saturn from a guy for $35 shipped last year.

I traded Psyvarier 2 for the Dreamcast for Twinkle Star Sprites for the Dreamcast (amazingly enough).

And while I don't know if presents would apply or not, I'll throw these two out there as well:
When I was younger and really wanted a Genesis, my grandfather gave me a JP Mega Drive and Alien Soldier for my birthday. To this day I'm amazed by that since we all live in the US, but I imagine he just walked into an import shop and didn't know the difference. Definitely an awesome gift!

A friend of mine in Japan was supposed to buy me a Panzer Dragoon Orta Xbox and I would pay her for it since I couldn't order it directly. But since Christmas was around the corner, she gave it to me as a Christmas present! Also, since she knew how big a fan of Panzer Dragoon I was, she was always hooking me up with whatever Panzer Dragoon goodies she could fine, and since her husband did background art for Sega, she did manage to snag me some good stuff directly from Team Andromeda.

Its a damn shame I no longer have any contact with her...

I bought a DTL-H10000S on Ebay from a Germany guy.

He didn't know what that "strange" PS2 was.
Maybe he thought it was damaged, because it did not read
PAL discs, and he sure did not know what a "debugging station" is
good for.

He offered it multiple times on Ebay:
- first for 95 € (noone buy it)
- then 85 € (noone buy it)
- then 75 € (then I buy it *g*)

It took a long time to ship (2 months) because that guy was to stupid
to check his bank account. So if someone is that stupid, he sure is
more stupid... The idiot used the original box for shipping :(((

He had two pieces, because after I got mine, he put up another one,
someone bought it, but he told me he still has it (of course he didn't
sell it, since he is to stupid to give correct BIC/IBAN bank account data).
So I will be going after the second one too.

Strange thing was... Inside the box I found a manual for a DTL-H30001 !

Anyway, the unit is perfectly working (even laser working!) and sure worth the 75 € hahahah:

I'll put up an image soon.

After much complaining to friends and gamestore employeers, i got 1 working 5 dead ps1's , a now dead and gone ps2, a genesis sans psu, a SMS, a complete phantasy star 1, a craptastic TV for all of it, and on top of that, a case of caffiene for that long next couple of days. ^_^

Two months ago I picked up a 2,5 Ghz AMD, 512 RAM, 10 Gb HD computer with mouse and a keyboard. Its owners got frustrated over it being constantly infected with all kinds of virus. When I was picking it up they mentioned that they let their friend who "knows this stuff" examine it, and he expertly judged that it was the processor.

When I brought it home, I booted it up and indeed, the system was infected. I didn't even bother to do anything ealse to it, other than completly format the HD, repartition it and install a fresh system.

They claimed to have experienced major slowdowns for no reason at all. I checked if the processor was being cooled properly. It was. With a fresh system onboard the thing runs like a charm. I gave it to my mom.

About 3 years ago Sega Japan found an old stock of the Pearl Blue Dreamcasts. You had to send them an email as an "entry form" and they'd randomly pick winners. If you won you got to buy the system for $99. I found out about it just after the contest had ended. I ended buying a couple on Yahoo for much more than $99, but they were still a good price since a lot of people were reselling them.

They were also selling brand new R7 Black Dreamcasts for $99. No one was buying...

About 2 years ago on the Sony US page they still had the European Color Collection Consoles. They were limited to 666 and are very hard to get in Japan. I guess no one knew about them in the US. The resale prices were almost the same so I passed on buying one...too bad. They were $249 new, I think...

Anyway, that just crossed my mind when reading this thread.

For my story, I picked up a PAC-S1 MegaDrive LaserActive aqccessory on Yahoo. The picture just had the unit with nothing else and a bare minimum description. I get the thing in the mail and it's a brand new unit with everything inluded. I went back to the auction and took a closer look at the picture and realized that he must have been using some stock photo from somewhere. The price was cheap since everyone assumed they were bidding on just the unit and no extras... I'm reselling it now, eBay 300011559792. Got lucky. ;)

Last week I bought a Microsoft Xbox Debug unit in the UK for £20.00 (Roughly $30). It is almost fully functional (it really does need a new DVDrom). It also turns out to be quite an interesting unit (see thread: http://www.gamerhistory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=339) my unit is the second one discussed in the thread.

I'm also forever trawling through car boot sales, flea markets & second-hand shops. Through the years I have had some amazing finds and yes, a few FREE items. Thanks to eBay it's becoming harder to find them in the usual places, but then again I've had one or two major bargains on eBay too!

Far too many to list actually, but the Debug is the latest and possibly most exciting one for me - ever!

Well, I'm lucky to say I have had a TON of awesome deals. Looking back I have been graciously blessed with mind-blowingly awesome deals. Steals. Not that I stole games, mind you. http://www.digitpress.com/forum/images/smiles/js_tongue.gif

Radiant Silvergun (albeit disc only) for $65. Hey, that's an awesome deal in my book. Complete copy = 150. I'll save 85 bucks any day if it meant I had to forego the back insert and manual! Wouldn't you? (non-collectors that is)

Since I was a major Saturn buff from 2001-2005, the majority of my steals came with this system. In 2002 a guy in Japan was starting an upstart Saturn website. He and I became good email buddies, and he liked my style of reviewing games. He booked me and in return sent me a load of free Saturn imports. I'm not talking no stinkin' cheapo Virtua Fighter. I still remember the 1st package: OutRun, Puyo Puyo Sun and Dead or Alive... all free.

July 2, 2002. The night my cousins came to visit me after not seeing each other for 8 (!) years... it was a beautiful day indeed.

Other goodies he sent me for free later in 2002:

X-Men vs. SF
Space Harrier
Magical Drop 3
Samurai Shodown III
Vampire Savior
BATTLE GAREGGA!!!!! ($80 value minimum)

and many more, all complete and mint. Unbelievable. No catch. He sent me these games all for free in exchange for my reviews, shipping out 3-5 out at a time.

Another guy I met a long time ago, apparently he loved me in a similar vain, as he sent me free games on 4 or 5 separate occasions. US Christmas NiGHTS (worth $25 at the time), Contra Legacy of War (it sucks but was semi-rare), 3D Saturn pad, Duke Nukem 3D, etc. and in his final shipment (2004) he sent me the likes of Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force III, Iron Storm and Dragon Force, all complete and mint. Holy crap. They were doubles and I sold or traded them off for major killings.

Looking back, I probably received over $1,000 value of games, for NOTHING. For free. Just because I happened to bump into a bunch of dudes who really appreciated the PASSION that I bought to the Saturn scene/community during the early 2000's. Incredible huh? From 2001-2005 I had like 7 or 8 different random "internet buddies" sending me FREE Saturn goodies. Now that whole experience is one I look back fondly on as a Saturn gamer. I'm not in the Saturn scene any more, as I simply burned out and the "mileage ran out," so to speak. Nonetheless, today I still keep the system and have 185 games for it.

I started my SNES journey in January 2006, and already have had some excellent deals. I bought Super Metroid on another site... I offered $8 shipped but he insisted on $7 shipped. Why, who cares, lol. Anyway, he didn't send it til about 3 weeks later, and never replied to my PM's so he stressed me out. However, when the package finally came, he threw in Mario All-Stars for his troubles.

Mario All-Stars was a double. I auctioned it off and got $15 from it.

So essentially, I got Super Metroid for free AND a couple bucks!

Recently, because me and this guy dealt before and I guess he liked me, offered a free copy of Metal Warriors. I was so excited. Free! A week later, I was at the flea market and found a copy! So I sold the double off for $36. I got the flea market copy by trading in $2 and a copy of Fatal Fury SNES. Are you kidding me?!

At 1 point, I owned as many as 3 Aero Fighter copies! One which I traded in for 4 lousy fighting game-related movie VHSes (SF The Anime, Samurai Shodown, Toshinden and Mortal Kombat) I *couldn't* move this junk on the internet for $15 shipped! The vendor gladly took it for Aero Fighters.

Not long ago, my bud sent me Megaman Soccer ($20-$25) and EVO ($50+) for free.

Did I also mention, in 2003, I won a Dreamcast system for free via a message board contest, where I had a fellow random stranger board member chat with me and helped me find the clues on different websites? The DC came with the essentials including Shenmue, Evolution and Grandia II. Crazy huh?

Well I've rambled on long enough. Thanks for being grounds to making an early Monday morning a nice fond trip down memory lane, where the road has been paved with great deals and steals. http://www.digitpress.com/forum/images/smiles/2003_smile.gif http://www.digitpress.com/forum/images/smiles/js_wink.gif

Standard UK Xbox for FREE! Moved into a new home, clearing out the attic as the previous owners hadn't done a good job - I discovered a plastic tub with a fully working Xbox and Mission Impossible game. Not world shattering, but I love free stuff!

It also means I can retire my limited edition unit and keep it for a rainy day.

funny you should say that hl718. I think there is going to be even more pressure for the adoption of the common currency in the light of a common borderless market. Got StarFox Command for the Nintendo DS for 300 mexican pesos, tax included ($27.60 US dollars) Might not sound like a great deal, but here the game retails normally for 500 pesos ($46 US dollars) In the end, it was even cheaper than getting it in the US, where I try to get most of my current gen games.

It's been fun so far, the control is actually very intuitive. Hopefuly the single player is just as good.

Is that Propellar Arena in the background a selfmade copy or kind of a promo/proto release?

It's the official (sample) artwork that was put on the internet (and also the artwork yakumo used for his cover). I put a seal on it, so it's like the real deal lol. (also got official (not printed) sample cover of Geist Force)

Sony PSP - TOTALLY FREE!

My previous PSP purchases cost me an alarmingly cheap $20 each, so when I complained to the store manager that one of them was supposed ot have had a good screen and didn't, he promised to give me the next broken PSP they got. His word was good as today he handed me a fully boxed PSP. It didn't work, failed to boot, but the box had the original sales receipt marked 2006. I called Sony and they have agreed to send a refurbished, but working unit to me.

I've already sold it (cheaply) to my nephew (who needs to learn the value of money & consoles as I have given him 2 PS2 and an Xbox in the past).

He gets a bargain then! Well done Sony customer support! :love2:

Which store is this that you're getting PSP's so cheap in?

I trawl several second-hand stores locally looking for faulty, incomplete, damaged items. From time to time you get units that can be easily repaired, or as sometimes occurs are actually perfectly ok! My opinion is that as such items are sold to me "...as seen" then it is the responsibility of the staff to ensure they are not selling undamaged items either by accident or because they don't know how they function. I was once sold a PS2 because the guy was suspicious of the fact that the start up screen no longer moved (i.e. the little white spheres moving around), which if you know the PS2 means that the time / date needed to be updated. He had turned down several machines because of this, so I told him and he gave me a cheap one for the information. I always think people should try reading the manual first, but hey!

Even rarer are items still under warranty, which if faulty can be returned to the manufacturer.

My last 360 was an NTSC unit sold to me cheaply because someone had fried the 110v PSU when they attemped to plug it into 240v. For the sake of a second-hand PSU on eBay, I managed to obtain the console for just £60 ($120) and it was fully functional.

It doesn't always work in my favour. I have been fighting with a Playstation 2 Tool for several months and ALMOST have it working (mostly thanks to Unclejun). A bargain for £150 ($300) but then again, they are selling on Yahoo Japan fully functional for that (just not prepared to pay such high shipping costs) and one UK eBay Tool went for £175 apparently fully functional.

My advice? Hunt, hunt, hunt for bargains and learn to haggle!

That's a good lot for a booty - most of the ones I goto are swooped on by pro games sellers who buy up all the good stuff before it's open to the public and them sell it on their stall for ebay prices.

I need to know where your carboot sales are matey as that's a couple of times you've returned home to chez toi with a bundle of nice deals under your belt. I bet the wife/partner/gfriend/bfriend (well you never know) is delighted when you dump your load of 8/16bit nonsense on the kitchen table like booty and announce your arrival!

A few years back I used to do exactly the same and ended up with a massive collection made up of things ranging from the sublime to the rediculous (such as mint boxed Classic SE mac set ups for £3 each), Dreamcast and 15 games £7 etc to the shit (several half working Amstrad CPC units). The house got jam packed and I had to sell it all off before wife 2 left me lol. Let that be a warning ;-)
