After I got the vga box, I never went back to the tv, so I lost a couple of games to play, ones that aren't selfboot. Because Utopia 1.1 doesn't work with vga box. WHich one should I use? Other utopias or another brand? Thanks for your help!
P.S. There are versions 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.5 of utopias. WHy so many, what are the differences?

All dreamcast games boot up just fine without a problem. As long as they are real! Your heading for a nice flame soon!

This is really the wrong board for such questions or do you see people posting their CDR/DVDR collections in the Collections section? ;-)

Well I can't realy answer the original question, but I think that it was a bit mean spirited of you guys to assume that he was a cheat. I think that his problem is that he does not have a modded DC and he wants to play imports so he uses the Utopia disc. BUT the utopia disc is not compatible with the VGA box and it will not display. SO he needs to know which boot disc is VGA box compatible.

i think unofficial v1.2 is VGA compatible from what I heard.
of course don't take my word for it and do more research on the subject. :)
personally i never used Utopia as my DC runs just about all titles except few PAL ones wihch I run on PAL DC.

ServiceGames, it would have been mean-spirited if all hokman had been wanting to do on his VGA adaptor was play imports, however, there was no mention at first of import games, it was:
I lost a couple of games to play, ones that aren't selfboot.
As far as most of us know, all original games are designed to be selfboot. The subject of playing imports only came up after Antipasta, Paulo, and a few others made comments on the nature of the question.

I understood what he meant when I first read his post but I did not reply because I cannot answer his question. his wording was poor at first but I think that if anyone here would have payed attention they would have understood what he was trying to say. Anyway, no hard feelings I am just trying to stick up for him a little.

Thank you, servicegames. I luv U! U are the only one who understands me. Ok back to topic. I'm sorry i seemed to be a nuisance to all of you, now I'm very very sorry. I want you to change the perception of me please. I really don't want to get ignored here, this is the only place I talk on the web. I know my english isn't very good, so sometimes people will get confused. But u must understand that i'm a big fan of dreamcast, so I should belong here. And it's not like I always ask and doesn't contribute anything. From now on, i'll try to be useful here.
:smt024
SO... u said 1.2... how about 1.3 and 1.5? Or gameshark? cdx... Thanks a lot.
If you were a big fan of the Dreamcast you would buy the games.

Did you not notice his last post was about downloading taxi or whatever it was...?
Thats why we all assume he is a cheat...
Buy the DC-X bootdisk. It plays almost everything, and supports the VGA box great. I bought mine for a fiver locally - bargain.
The DC-X is different to the Gameshark CDX which isn't as good.

Yeah, the avatar seems good to me, I can even look at it at work. ^_^
Not to go too off topic, but I'm curious to hear more of people's opinions of illegitimate games on this forum. I have extensive collections of both legit games and non legit games. I am currently over half way on a complete (legitimate) USA DC collection which I am very proud of. I'm not asking anyone to endorse illegitamate games, but I'm just wondering about opinions on the legitimacy of a couple of things.
One, used games. The original creators make no money on a used game, the only person that makes money on a used game is whoever is selling it (note, this is a person who did not make the game or has any claim to it aside from the fact that they are a retailer and purchased it for a small amout from someone else). Who is more illegitemate, someone making money off of used original games, or someone getting an illegitemate copy for free?
Also importing. As far as I know, companies put those region codes on games for a reason. I know that game importing is big, and it happens, but it obviously goes agains the original publishers intent, which is that the game is sold and played only in the region it was originally intended. Again I am curious about who is more illegitemate, those who leech original merchandise out of the market it was intended for, or those who get an illegitimate copy for free, in a country that is outside of the one that the original was released in.
I am guilty of both importing software/hardware and buying used games, as I think most people on this board are. I'm just curious what people think about the legitimacy of these things esp in comparison to other "less legitimate" gaming practices.
Shall I summerise:
Import games = Legal
Used games = Legal
Copied Games = Illegal
Rather than starting a "pirate games" flamebait, I think that's enough to summerise my points.

I know better to believe someone from HK owns originals :P
You guys don't have to be such assholes about backups either. Each to their own. Theoretically if he were making backups why does it hurt you so much? I'd like to explore this if anyones interested in discussion.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of Dreamcast. Why should I have to justify my position on buying games even if I were a fan? So I don't buy the games (well I have a dozen but thats nothing) whats the deal?
I'd advise people to make their own decisions and not be taken in by some message board peep's guilt trips or the game industry's propoganda.

Yeah I went out and murdered an old couple tonight.
My friends told me not to do it and said something about it being illegal, but what the hell. Who are they to tell me what is right? I figured that it wasn't realy hurting anyone because Hey they're old and no one will miss them anyway.
Am I right or am I right?

kyuusaku makes a good point that's what i want to say in my heart
Buying original games is now "game industry propoganda"?
You guys are either incredibly naive or incredibly stupid, kyuusaku really didn't make any good points unless your a person with no moral responsibility or thought.
Perhaps at the end of the day when people appreciate something they get sick of hearing others blatantly take the route that has already had consequences and forced Sega to abandon the DC.
If you honestly aren't a big fan then do yourself a favour and don't comment.

Your point is fine and valid. I along with prob everyone here at one time or another has had a copy of a game BUT we dont talk about it here... Thats what most of us are asking. . .

Buying games isn't propoganda, nobody said it was.
What moral responsibility do I have? Either way, I would have bought my 12 games. Whether or not I copy games and play them once is no different then me borrowing a game from a friend, Sega sees none of my money. You aren't a spokesperson for Sega, how do you know piracy forced Sega to abandon the DC? It certainly couldn't have been because nobody liked the lineup; or that it was past its prime, 4 years after its release, and no 90% of the games didn't suck. Definately Sega could have competed with Squaresoft backed Sony if it hadn't been for those pirates.
Face it, Sega systems flop, there just wasn't enough support from developers. Even N64 had more games over approximately the same lifespan. I think a "true" fan wouldn't call the DC abandoned as of now anyways, afterall the occasional sim game is being released. My ideology is that if Sega/Nintendo/Sony had just stopped making games alltogether, there'd be less for me to collect... things are different now Segas out of the hardware game, get over it. Piracy is enevitable so its something you'll have to live with, you can engage in it or stay clear and clean.

Unfortunately I don't believe that is the case, Kron has another agenda as seen in his post.
Im just sick and tired of people coming up with every weak excuse under the sun to justify themselves pirating software.
I know many people who worked for legitimate developers who have gone out of business in the last 12 months due to this very issue, Its also begining to have a serious effect on certain genres slowly dieing as less importance is being put on them due to lack of interest at the retail sale point.
If people want to play a game (be it new or old) they should atleast make an effort to buy it. Unfortunately the majority of people seem to be lazy and take the easy way out to satisfy their greed.

Although I no longer copy games, I used to. Infact that is probably the reason I got into video games. Someone gave me a PS1 & I had just bought a CD burner. I dont think I would be interested in video games now if I hadnt downloaded loads of PS1 games a few years ago. I now buy all my games, although most are 2nd hand (I dont own any of the current consoles due to my PS1s both being stolen from me).
As for roms, I dont bother with them really, although I have a set of mame roms I have never used & also a few emulator / rom sets on the DC which again, I've never used.
Basically, I think that people who play copied games will probably one day start to buy them instead (as I did), or just give up on gaming altogether.
