Hello, friends.

As many of you may recall, my company (Super Fighter Team (http://www.superfighter.com/)) produced and released Beggar Prince (http://www.beggarprince.com/) for the Sega Genesis / Megadrive in 2006. The following year, we began working on our next game, which is now available for ordering:

Legend of Wukong (http://www.legendofwukong.com/) is our brand new role playing adventure game for the Sega Genesis / Megadrive. Its story opens as the young Wukong, a student from the year 1996, accidentally gets thrown back hundreds of years into the past when he foolishly decides to mess around with his neighbor's newly invented time machine. Facing vicious demons in China's Tang Dynasty, he must come to his senses, make some friends and overcome the odds in hopes of retrieving the time machine and returning home.

In keeping with our quality standards, the game ships complete with authentic 16-megabit cartridge (with SRAM battery for saved games), plastic clamshell case with color insert, and 16-page full color instruction manual. For more information, please visit the game's official website: www.legendofwukong.com (http://www.legendofwukong.com/)

If you have any questions about the game, please feel free to let me know here at the forum or by e-mail, and I'll be happy to respond in a timely manner.

Thank-you for your attention, and best wishes for 2009!

Nothing's impossible.

Any news is good news, I'd think, especially in regard to classic gaming!

Thanks for helping to spread the word!

Video Game Trader magazine published a "first look" at Legend of Wukong in this month's issue, written by me. Their only error was to print that the game was due for release in early 2009. In fact, it was released officially on December 03, 2008.

Here are a few, new press features regarding Legend of Wukong, the Retroaction article being a very lengthy, detailed review of the game which includes exclusive screenshots.

*** Sega-Brasil interview with Brandon Cobb (http://sega-brasil.com.br/index.php?q=entrevista-com-brandon-cobb-da-super-fighter-team.html) (in Portuguese)

We have also sponsored and will be represented at this year's Byte-Back (http://www.byte-back.info/) event in Stoke-on-Trent, England, the weekend of March 7-8, 2009.

I can't see the point in porting Beggar Prince to other systems. It would be nice if there were more completely new games made, like Pier Solar. Instead of just translations that is.

For an oldschool Nintendo fanboy like me it makes sense to make an SNES port :-)

Thanks for your interest, but I think I can safely say that Beggar Prince will not be ported to the SNES, either now or in the future. As a company we are generally against the idea of "ports", and if we were ever to produce a game for the Super Nintendo we would wish it to be something custom-tailored to take full advantage of the system's unique capabilities: not just a game redeveloped from the Genesis.

Legend of Wukong made its first public event appearance at this year's Byte-Back event in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England (March 7-8, 2009). Presented for free play along with Beggar Prince, both games were also available for purchase in limited quantities.

Question:

Out of curiosity, is there a log/list of the the changes that have been made to the original game, aside from translating it?

Sure! I've attached a zipped copy of the list to this message. Just load it into your browser (it's an HTML file) after unarchiving. :)

Keep in mind it isn't a complete list of changes, but it does cover a lot of the work we did. I didn't think to keep a running list of everything right off the bat.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know. Thanks for your interest!

Good question. We put two teams together to do just that, back in 2001. The game was to be brought to both the Genesis/Megadrive (as a port) and the Gameboy Advance (as a highly updated version). The Gameboy Advance version, nicknamed 'Super Fighter Advance (http://www.synchrnzr.com/gallery.superfighteradvance.html)' during development, actually got the furthest along of the two. However we had trouble holding down a lead artist, so things went a bit awry and I ended up putting a seperate team together to work on Super Fighter Block Battle (http://www.sfblockbattle.com/), which did finally get finished and released for the mobile phone.

I'm not going to say we don't have any plans to do a Super Fighter 'port' or 'sequel' or the like; but at least for the moment it isn't a project we're heavily focused on. Honestly, for me, it would be a stellar thing to see through to completion, because Super Fighter started the whole experience for me.

I think you would have a lot of fun with it. :)

@Mr. Sound-about:

I would agree with you, in that a release of Super Fighter would be great since it is a flagship title. Re-releasing translated and bug fixed Taiwanese games are great (Especially if you can't read Chinese), but I think Super Fighter is THE game people are really waiting for. :P

Since you've been having trouble with artists, wouldn't pushing for a Megadrive port be the most logical step since all the assets already exist for the PC? Perhaps they don't scale down on the Megadrive correctly so new assets are needed?

Oh? I would've thought it was Zaku (http://www.zaku-lynx.com/) that people were really waiting for. :)

That's one of the reasons we stopped work on our Mega Drive port: the original game graphics are very "VGA"; they don't step down well to the MD's color restrictions. To create a worthwhile experience, new graphics would indeed be required. These days, it's not that we have any issues finding / hiring / keeping an artist, it's more that the extensive graphical work required for such a project would be a bit pricey -- and as I've said a million times, there really isn't any money to be made from what we're doing. Thus I can't justify a bloated graphics budget even if it is for my favorite fighting game.

Well, ok. Perhaps I'm a bit biased :-)

I guess if no real money is being made then it indeed would be hard to justify making Super Fighter. But hopefully it's something that could be a long term project, rather than a dead one.

PS: Hypotheticly, If indeed a version of Super Fighter got produced, would it still include all the naughty bits like the nude ending?

I have a deep respect for Jon Cheng, the game's lead programmer. He was against the idea of the Super Fighter characters appearing naked in the game, and in fact, this bit was added to the game's code only after he had quit the company to work for Panda Entertainment. Personally I don't think it added anything to the game, and that it actually feels out of place to me. Super Fighter isn't an adult content game -- that sort of 'smut peddling' through fighting games was more appropriate for a title like Strip Fighter II on the PC Engine, which was developed by Hacker International using a watered down version of the Super Fighter engine.

Ah... So he moved to Panda Entertainment (Another company with lots of great IPs - Games).

Too bad the game console version of Sango Fighter sucked. It would be cool if a company could do a proper port in the future.

I was fortunate enough to finally get an article about myself and Super Fighter Team published in a local news publication, something I'm very thankful for. Check it out from the link below, along with a very cool and unique French article about Legend of Wukong which comes with a brief history of the Mega Drive...

Mr. Sound-About,

How did you go about creating the plastic Sega Genesis clamshell packages?

Did someone design new clamshells?
Is it a new design based on the old ones?
Or is it a new production of the exact same design? If so, how?

I think there must be a story in your answer. I've been searching for resources over the years for replacement Genesis & Master System clamshells.

I don't own your games yet, so I can't inspect them myself. I guess you could also answer for me how you created the plastic cartridge shape? Thank you!!

Mr. Sound-About

How did you go about creating the plastic Sega Genesis clamshell packages?

They are manufactured brand-new for us by our factory in China. The design is based on the original cases but it is not an exact copy.

I think there must be a story in your answer. I've been searching for resources over the years for replacement Genesis & Master System clamshells.

Many factories used to produce these cases. However, with the decline of new cartridge games for these systems and the rise of "all-in-one" units (clones), the demand for all of these materials is low. Finding a factory to produce the units these days is difficult; finding one that can do a good job of it is even more difficult. While interviewing for the production of our Beggar Prince cases, I ended up talking to over a dozen factories before finding the quality I was looking for. Most factories will demand a specific base order (Taiwan = 10,000 units; China = 1,000 - 5,000) partly because of the nuisance involved in producing new MD cases in the year 2009.

I hope you can find this information useful, but please keep in mind we cannot sell individual empty game cases or any other materials as we only order enough to meet our production numbers.
