I need a better soldering iron...

If you go in public with the Nomad with a Mega CD and a 32X playing while waiting for the bus I'll give you an e-cookie. :P

Nice technical achievement there. Great post!

I'm impressed with your technical knowledge, nice one :)

Very nice indeed. Now can it be done on a Genesis 3 console?

I plugged in a Game Genie Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 2 into my Nomad running off battery power, it went surprisingly well.

When the Nomad was fairly new I broke mine trying the same thing. Of course, there was nothing technical in my attempt, rather than just trying to force the thing in there :P

what a badass solution, congrats!

Although nice, it is rather pointless as having the 32X in pieces to play it probably means it would be better to use a real console. Although the whole point of the nomad is the fact it's a portable console, so find a way to get the 32X to work with an internal screen. ;)
BTW in the first picture with the wires soldered to the chip and the cartridge slot, it shows 4 wires but only 3 of them seem to be documented, any reason why this is?
because the 4th one is to enable SMS mode

Can you detail how you found you needed to bridge connections?
Nomad = earlier kind of MD2
So I looked into my MD2 to find the missing contacts, simple :) Only difficulty lies in soldering, as you need to solder on tiny pins...

Damn this project must of been hard to do, just to find were the correct wires go is gotta hell.
not really... it took maybe 15 mins for research and soldering

Very hot. Definitely going to attempt this mod. Thanks for the great work and research!

I cannot help but notice the name on the Nomad PCB "VENUS", I guess this may potenitally mean that the Nomad was internally known as Venus.
Now I may be getting carried away here but if the Nomad was Venus, 32X was Mars, MD+32X was Neptune and the Saturn was obviously er the Saturn I notice both Mercury and Jupiter shaped holes in the pattern.
Afterthought: Obviously this is pure speculation but are there any markings on the MegaCD or MultiMega parts to suggest that they are either Mercury or Jupiter.

Wasn't Jupiter the rumored cart-only Saturn?

Yes, and Mercury was the Game Gear.
The Moon is speculated to be the Mega CD (due to the bios background being the moon, but iirc only the eu/usa bios is like that - though I dunno if the planet codenames were even used by SOJ).
EU MCD BIOS has some geometric objects, no moon or stuff like that as you see in USA BIOS. Music is same as JP BIOS has though.

I remember the first time I saw the JVC X'EYE boot up with it's custom graphics but European background music. Startled me at first, then amused.

There are 2 Japanese Mega CD BIOS. The first is in sky with clouds and a mountain while the second is the same as the EU PAL Mega CD with those strange objects and gold disc. Some music too. As far as I know, only the US system has that ugly space design with the not so great music.

And Venus was the female prototype. It never got off the ground as it was a very complicated project.

Venus was the Nomad, just check the PCB in the first post.

small correction : EU MCD1 has same background as USA BIOS, but music is same as JP BIOS.

I can only imagine how quickly that would suck the nomad batteries dry
With a MCD attached also, things should last at least 15 minutes :P
Talking about a lovely 3 amper load, hahahahaaaaaa :D
