View Full Version : A competition for collectors

retro
02-01-2008, 09:56 PM
I know Kevin has had a lot to deal with of late, and of course trivial things on the site will be the last thing on his mind. So, as we didn't have a contest last month, I thought I'd set something for this month. (Kev, if you don't approve, feel free to lock this).

So, without further ado, here's my competition...

I noticed there are many nice collections in the 'Your collections' forum. However, I haven't seen many people of late who collect a particular title, e.g. Sonic or Mario. I know you're out there! So, I'm looking for the best collection in several categories. The categories are:

Crash Bandicoot
Gran Turismo
Mario
Mortal Kombat
Pokemon
Ratchet & Clank
Rayman
Sonic
Spyro
Star Wars
Tomb Raider
Tony Hawk
Worms
Zelda

Why these games? Well, I'll be donating a prize to the winner of each category! (Disclaimer: This is done out of my own pocket, there will be no cost to anyone else, and this has nothing to do with Kevin or ASSEMblergames.com)

The Rules

Entries should be presented in the following manner:

Post your collection in the 'Your collections' forum (give it an obvious title, e.g. Retro's Sonic Collection).
If you already have a thread, bump it.
Reply to this thread with a link to your collection thread, stating you are entering the competition.
Collections may consist of anything relating to the relevant game, e.g. Sonic video games, Sonic boxer shorts, Star Wars toys, Star Wars cereal boxes etc. The more obsessive the better!!
Entrants must have signed up to ASSEMblergames.com before 1 Feb 2008 (this is to stop people from signing up just to get free stuff!)
The closing date is Friday 29 February 2008 at midnight GMT
Winners will be decided by a public poll
Don't ask what the prizes are. I won't tell you!

If you don't as yet have a collection of any of the above, maybe now is the time to decide you want to start a collection ;-) It would be interesting to see if someone won who started from scratch!

Good luck, people!

UPDATES

I have added Tony Hawk to the list, as I have a prize for that, too!
If you want to suggest a category for which you have a decent collection, go ahead. If I can find a prize, it will be added. If not, then there will be a miscellaneous category. The vote will be for best miscellaneous collection.

I have my Gran Turismo collection posted, but i know it's not the best. (nowhere near that)

It could have been upgraded, if the mail wasn't so incompetent. But part of the money spent was saved, thanks to the japanese mail, so i can try again.

Anyway, entries are free, so:

I have a faily extensive Tombraider collection including most of the comics, action figures (dolls as my missus says), boardgames, plus most of the games on various formats amongst other things, sadly most of it is boxed away but ill try and dig it out and post a few pics!

My son also has a pretty huge pokemon collection including several thousand trading cards, toys, plush's, games, comics, books, a pokemon themed bedroom (duvet cover, curtains, wallpaper, posters etc) so ill take some snaps of that (well once ive tidied up his hellhole of a bedroom!)

LOL! "Tidy up your room! I'm trying to win a competition here!"

Absolutely, Johnny! I saw yours the other day (part of my inspiration for this, hehe)... I think it is pretty decent personally! And besides, you have a month to expand it, too ;-) heh. I think that's the right attitude, though - definately for the games on the list for which there may not be too many collectors! Who knows, you could win just by owning one game! Hmm, maybe there should be a rule that a collection must be two items minimum.... hehe.

I'm glad to see there's already some people wanting to enter, and that you're being motivated to take pictures of your collections! Keep up the good work, guys!

beautiful, johnny! by the way, how nice, and how playable is GT2000?

How nice? Better than GT2, worse than GT3. Imagine GT3 in low res and without anti-aliasing.

How playable? It's a demo, but it's fun. I installed it on my HDD (so no need to kill the PS2 lens with the CD-R). You race in Seattle.

I'll try to make an article about it (i'm promising this for ages), and since ill have a week off (it's carnaval time), i'll try to finally write it.

No problem. This topic was a great idea. I hope i can expand my collection soon too.

By the way, i have signed photos of the Pescarolo Team (Henri Pescarolo, the Team owner, and the drivers). For those you don't know, they race in LMES and Le Mans 24h with a Courage C60 prototype sponsored by Gran Turismo and PlayStation. Does it count for the collection? If yes, i can take pics.

Seems a limited range of games, how about expanding it to any game that has a series? That way I can post things like Idol Mahjong Suchie Pai

retro
02-02-2008, 04:06 PM
Johnny - sure, if you count it as part of your collection, stick it in ;-)

Jamtex - well, I can't offer a prize for that title! lol. Nothing stopping you from taking pictures, though ;-) I guess you could still have the title of best Idol Mahjong Suchie Pai collection, lol!

You should've included Dragon Ball Z or James Pond 2... ;-)

retro
02-02-2008, 10:26 PM
Dragon Ball Z would be good, although I don't have much of a prize. If anyone wants to do it, fine. Actually, I found some stuff for Tony Hawk's collectors, so if someone wants to do that....

Feel free to make other suggestions, as you never know, I might add them!

Not worried if you don't have anything related for a prize - it's not the winning etc... ;-)

Would love to see a Densha de Go collection....cool....

Someone must have a Spyro collection - come out whereever you are..would be excellent to see Spyro stuff.

Slightly off topic but has anyone published a Laurel and Hardy game for any console?
(I have a Laurel + Hardy collection that's pretty neat...alas not in scope....)

Well, you still get to be called anally fanatical lol!

OK, so if anyone wants to show off a collection relating to a series of games not listed, so be it. They probably won't get a prize, but I guess you can still be crowned king (or queen) of collecting that game! ;-)

Laurel and Hardy, eh? Nice! I can't say I recall a game, though.... Mind you, there's nothing to stop you from posting some pics in the collections forum... it doesn't specify GAMING collections! ;-)

Would love to see a Densha de Go collection....cool....Right, then - I'll see if I can get pics of everything done & post something up later in the month (after my next shipment from Japan turns up).

Well, you still get to be called anally fanatical lol!I usually get called far worse...

Damnit, wish my Tomb Raider stuff wasn't all in storage.

You have the rest of the month to go and photograph it ;-) hehe!

OK, updated the original post with a new category (Tony Hawk), and also a ruling for other games. Basically, if you ask, I'll add it if I can get a prize, otherwise it'll go to a miscellaneous section and people will vote for the best miscellaneous collection ;-)

Was thinking of adding Phantasy Star, but I couldn't find the prize I was looking for. I may well add Bomberman and Grand Theft Auto. Any takers?

Despite this thread not having a Desert Strike category, I went ahead and finally took some photographs. Thread: 'Strike Series (http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=258305).

It'd be nice if this category was added, but does anyone other than me collect this stuff? :) I'm just happy to have gotten some pictures to show it off.

You should've included Dragon Ball Z or James Pond 2... ;-)

If there was an James Pond 2 category then i probably would win

But recently i have started to collect some Lode Runner series games that could be a good category to add.

Jamtex
02-03-2008, 08:57 PM
Maybe there should be a misc catergory for the person with the most interesting collection of other games. That'll stop claims of the person running this being collectist.. :p

retro
02-03-2008, 09:14 PM
Well, the categories are because I have SPECIFIC prizes for those games. Games like James Pond (and it'd be any, not just the second ;-)), the Strike games etc. are great, and I'd love to see your collections, but it is unlikely I'll find anything to give as a prize. As such, there is indeed a miscellaneous section - so enter your collections and I'll put them under that. ;-)

OK, I'll update the entrants list now.

I don't plan on entering any of the competitions myself (as my Zelda collecting days are now over I feel it would be wrong to enter what I have as 'technically' I don't collect anymore) but I would just like to give Retro a big thumbs up for hosting a competition off his own back, very commendable sir.

Nice to see more entries coming in. The list has been updated. Unfortunately, it is quite sparse at the moment! Get those entries in ASAP, people!

I'm hoping we'll hear again from diddydonn, sojiroh and limey, who all expressed an interest.

Tatsujin - if you want to enter in the misc category, you are of course welcome, but we need a pic! Just create a thread as per the instructions.

Oli - that's a shame, a C&C collection would be pretty cool! OK, so I have the recent box set of all the games, but seeing the originals would be nice, as there are a few that we rarely get in our shop!

Kiff - a shame you had to choose between the two - always a tough decision! Pity that means there's no competition for the Zelda prize, at the moment! Thanks for being a good sport and not entering, though! ;-)

I'm surprised there are no Mario entries yet. I'm hoping Virtual Alan will get a moment to take some pics and enter :-) Any other Mario collectors out there?

Thanks, Diddydonn! The way things are going, you'll be winning most categories! Yeah, get yer Pokemon pic in, too - one more to win ;-)

I realise that I was a little unclear on the time the competion ends. It ends tomorrow, but by midnight I meant the midnight at the end of the day, not the start! So if anyone wants to enter, you have just over 24 hours left. Got that? Good!
