View Full Version : Changing the search limitations?

I just realized that you can't search for any word that's 3 letters long... Does the software allow some control over this? I wanted to search the titles of the messages in the forsale thread for 'PSP' or 'PS3' and it wouldn't allow it... :110:

Just a thought, if it's a change that can be made...

I think that some of the troubles is that lots of people makes searches with the topic name to find it. For example, you want to find this topic's name s you write "Changing the search limitations", if you search for it now you'll see only a result, this topic. But without the search limitations you would see every topic with the word "the" in the title or inside it, which makes the search way more annoying.

True... I was thinking maybe there was a way to allow just certain 3 letter words (like PSP, etc...). I was trying to find a thread of someone selling PSP demos, so I did a search for 'psp demo', and 'PSP' was omitted because it was too short, so I got the results of every demo ever mentioned on the site...

Not a pretty search result. :110:

It was the member Haruglory who was selling the PSP demos if I remember rightly. Search his material or PM him directly to establish the specifics. Hope that helps! ;-)

Yhis is an issue on all forum, vBulletin and phpBB do not allow board aministrator in their option to lower the keyword lenth to 3.

So allowing 3 letter search will need some code tweaking in vBulletin...

So don't hope to much about it to happen ;)

A workaround (albeit an imperfect one) is to use google - put site:www.assemblergames.com in as part of the query string:
ie: to search for "search limitations", enter site:www.assemblergames.com search limitations into the search bar.

Yes, this is standard across most sites using mySQL. Otherwise, you end up overloading the database with searches for small words. Granted, it's a pain for words such as PSP, but it's when people search for words that will come up millions of times.

Try the following:

PS3: Don't be so lazy! It's Playstation 3!
PSP: Try PSP* (Ahh, Kev's not gonna like me for revealing that trick!)

Anybody remember this from bash.org?

<Insomniak`> Stupid fucking Google
<Insomniak`> "The" is a common word, and was not included in your search
<Insomniak`> "Who" is a common word, and was not included in your search
