While not directly game related, this can be useful if you're creating HD-DVD discs.

Retail price on the emulator is $3k. But it doesn't require a debug system which is a plus.

Seems far to late out of the stables in my book, bearing in mind you can already run hi-def .wmv films from whatever-u-like i.e. fill a 1tb external usb hdd full of films, sit back and enjoy.

...I appreciate their app is a 'testing' aka 'dev' app, just seems too late in the day imo. (specially when u look @ $3k as opposed to virtaully $0)

This isn't targeted (or intended) for the end user who wants to play HD .WMV or H.264 files.

This is targeted to the studios that are selling HD-DVDs and need to worry about verifying spec and testing all use cases as part of the mastering process.

As a tool in that space, it's actually pretty darn reasonable cost-wise.

Yeh I'm well aware of its intended target 'audience', like I said its a 'testing' tool, just commenting that there are other ways of cracking a nut ;)

Is there an HD-DVD spec-compliant emulator you can get for 'virtually $0'? I'd love to hear about that...

This software is an emulator for HD-DVDs, the only other alternative I've aware of for doing that is Toshiba's hardware emulator that costs $15,000. If you know of a nearly free solution, I'd LOVE to hear about it. (Remember, PowerDVD is not spec compliant... ).

The emulator is pretty cool if you are in the business of making HD-DVDs. You can take disk images loaded onto a harddrive and emulate them like they were replicated HD-DVD discs. The software does require user verification over Xbox Live to run, so it's not something that can just be copied around, but it's a must have for anyone making these movies. All the studios have a copy of this software on a 360 for testing purposes.

I suppose on the piracy side of things you could rip HD-DVDs directly to a hard drive and use this to play them back exactly as they were intended (if you want all the interactive menus and such)... But, of course, I'd never suggest anyone actually do that.

And it's actually been around for several months at least. I've been using it since August or so...

I wonder if anyone can buy it, or if you have to be a licensed HD-DVD developer to actually complete the purchase...
