View Full Version : Dumping NR discs?
Hey,
I've bought an NR disc recently, but unfortunately, I do not have an NR reader. Could anyone with an NR reader here dump the contents for me? I will pay for the return shipping etc.
Thanks in advance

dot50cal was/is offering this 'service' according to his sig.

GC, PSO NR, Cross-over cable, some special data on the mem-card and you're set.
The hardest bit is to find PSO-NR disks of course.

Don't you need at least a NR drive to read NR discs?

the NR-drive is provided by the NR-cube, if that's what you mean

Yeah but he doesn't have a NR cube.
Besides, wouldn't it just be easier to just get a NR reader + modchip with backup software in flash rather than PSO, a NR writer, NR discs, memory card etc ?

I'm actually curious about another method.
Does require an NR Reader, but does not require PSO on an NR disc or modding a system.
The only difference between an actual GC and an NR reader is the way the disc is decrpyted. Take an NR optical drive and plug it into a regular cube, it works. Ok.
Boot into some softmod OS on a regular cube, then hot-swap to an NR optical drive to read the disc. Two problems with this scenario:
1) The GC might not like you transplanting the optical drive when its running and might cause the unit to lock up or possibly cause hardware damage. I *might* be willing to test this myself.
2) The softmod OS usually detects the drive model on bootup, and swapping the drive might work, but if its trying to control the optical drive as something else, you might also hit your roadblock here. I highly doubt any GCOS coder intended for you to do anything remotely like this, so don't bet on it working.
Worth thinking about.
Oh, and dot50cal is extremely helpful in this area. Good idea to give him a PM as he has PSO on an NR disc :)

You need a PSO NR Disc? PM me and we can talk. Nintendo

I read somewhere that you can swap the retail optical drive with the NR optical drive. You don't have to hotswap. However the unit must be chipped so you can use the OS for ripping the disc

I have always wondered if a similar modification would work on a RVT-R Reader to dump a RVT-R disc.

Probally yes; if you have the twilight princess on RVT-R :)

chip is not neccessary, softmod is enough for this

Very true but are retail Wii saves compatible with a RVT-R Reader?

I don't know, but I'll check!

I believe the NR saves are compatible with retail (so long as its basically the same build), so Id imagine its the same for the Wii?

I *think* you don't need any GC/NR reader to dump these. Just an LG8163B (was that the correct type?) PC DVD drive, rawdump util , and the unscrambler04 (to bruteforce the seeds and get a clean decrypted image). I might be wrong though, but afair NR discs are physically structured the same as GOD/WOD.

I just tried with with an 8164B and it didn't work.
"Error! You may have a faulty drive!!!"
I tried with with a normal gamecube game, and it started the dump as normal with no error. Any other ideas?

a mate managed to dump a RVT-R Disc with a LG drive, you 'just' have to hotswap it with an original WiiDisc

Exactly the same message by me, it's certainly a question of firmware...

Could you elaborate on that? What LG drive? How did he hotswap it?

Yeah, please elaborate. Everything I've seen with NR discs and retail cube games says they are incompatible with the various methods to rip the two. Since the Wii uses the same system essentially, you really need to expand on that!

well we were talking about RVT-R Disc and how to dump them, I tried it on the wii with some drivechip modifications but due the way the sectors are number on the RVT-R Disc it didn't work.
So I looked around the internet for some information about my DVD drives I got lying around, but couldn't find anything usefull. Except that the famous LG drives use a vendor CMD that starts with 0xE7 "HIT", HIT as in HITACHI and I still had an old (10 years) Hitachi DVD-ROM lying around.
So I tried the CMDs there without any luck, then I looked for some firmware update for it and looked through the binary and found three vendor CMDs within it, one of them allowed me to dump the firmware and from there on started RE'ing it.
Currently I can easily disable ECD checks for WiiDisc and RVT-R Disc this allow me to read sectors with the normal 0x28/0xA8 ReadSector command, but then I'm missing six bytes per sector. I found another CMD which allows me to dump the first 0xCF sectors RAW which I could unscramble with the tool by xt5.
Shouldn't take too long untill I can completly dump Wii- and RVT-R Discs.
It's a Hitachi GD-2500 one of the first DVD-ROMs, I also setup a wiki with all information I gathered http://crediar.no-ip.com/gd25k/ .
Once I got it working I will release a tool which will be able to dump WiiDiscs/RVT-R Discs with that drive.

So your friend was able to do it with an LG drive, and you're able to do it with this Hitatchi drive as well? Good luck making that tool. Cant wait to try it when youre done.
