Hmmm... when it comes to making game covers, I always like having gameplay screens on the back, side. Plus, I think the cover should be specific to Jade Gully and the nights engine.
Do you think you could take a few screens that you think would be "cover art" worthy.
Like for us to work with.

Holy SHIT! Yakumo, you designed that cover?
1) Finds a little alter
2) Grabs some incense
3) Buys some candles
4) Grabs screen image
I have created a little shrine to that cover art. That is superb mate! Wow!
Maybe for the Sonic Xtreme cover you should use more of a Japanese Manga style, just to be completely ironic. Something like Japanese Sonic team smashing up the Saturn and allowing it to die for instance?

Hey, whether you grabbed aspects of it or not it looks professional and it looks authentic. You've clearly spent a bit of time on it, which is why it has that cool aspect about it! The layout of these things is what is so important.
I don't think many people realise the amount of time that is spent in designing artwork, promotional material and advertising material. From time to time I'd be sent pre-production material from record labels and when the final album was released you'd spot subtle differences. Argh, I guess I am a nerd when it comes to my music.
I LOVE Japanese cover art, films, books etc and don't have nearly enough of it. There's just not the outlet for this kind of thing locally and at present I am in no position to import all the stuff I would like.
I saw the releases you produced and their cover art was always pretty impressive, but that one just looks as if it were a final product.
Go, glow in new found glory lol

@Ccovel: I think i prefer this version:
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9490/xxxtreme12wh9.jpg
well i thought about it.
I would have made some hand-drawn , detailed, megadrive-like sonic art-work, if only the game was the fisheye version.
This version , with the nights engine, is just a field and sonic running around it. It's simple, yet historic. Nothing "extreme" about it though, game-wise.
I thought something subtle, and mute, but with an obvious meaning would be more appropriate for the content included instead of the classic cheesy sonic covers. The silent personality of the picture represents what could have been.
I took cues from the Sonic team logo and Sonic & Knuckles
I am not really that good with garphics stuff but i think for me this is quite good
I didn't want to have sonic in color but i was going to have the X-treme logo/text in red with the sonic in blue as it is but i couldn't get the X-treme part right. I thought the blur effect looked quite nice anhd gave the effect of movement

nice work 3do:D The "long-legged sonic" of Sonic Adventure is definetely more aggressive than his previous versions, yet anachronistic considering SA was released years later
Thanx Barc0de, I prefer the Sonic Adventure sonic to any other and because of his agressiveness i think he is more suited to the title Xtreme
I may redo the Xtreme part of my design when i have time

I say use a resized version of the original SOA one or the one made by Nitro, since both look very professional.
BTW, why dont we use a custom ESRB badge? Like the "D for DUMB" http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8370/dumbth8.jpg or just the RP one since it isnt rated at all.
The KA one could give it a more oldschool feel since its no longer used (but it was at the time).
EDIT: nitro could you make the lateral saturn bar with the classic white&grey ribbon?
Nitro734
05-31-2007, 09:18 PM
Its a pretty safe bet that the ESRB would have tacked on a KA rating if the game saw the light of day at the time. I could change the "ESRB" text to read "A0bC" for "ASSEMbler 0th bit Community" or some other 3-4 letter acronym. Wouldn't be hard at all.
Shadowlayer
05-31-2007, 10:08 PM
I think I saw a final cover version with the KA instead of the RP badge, but maybe it was a fake...
Anyways, we could add the ASSEMblergames.com logo next to the SEGA one, and maybe the STI one too.
BTW: about the art you used, I liked the classified-like white label since it goes well with the whole idea behind this, but the BG art looks like something that belongs to a different generation of both game, console and drawing style (which is kinda true).
If its all about a more agressive sonic, honestly the anime designs from SonicCD looked more badass if you ask me, specially this unused SOA cover:
http://www.sonic-cult.org/imagebin/manueeeelscd1.jpg
Dunno its just an opinion, plus it doesnt looks so different from the style sonic used at the time, while the SA style was a complete overhaul and a big change from previous desings.
Nitro734
05-31-2007, 10:26 PM
The artwork in the background is some altered concept art for the upcoming DS game, Sonic Rush Adventure. I looked for appropriate artwork from the timeframe and I couldn't locate anything that would suit the "xtreme" idea. So I went with some newer artwork and did a cool cropping job to eliminate the bulk of the changes that Sonic has seen over the past few years. He still looks new (as this game is seeing light in 2007), yet is dark and mysterious, reflecting the game's history thus far.

I don't feel like making a box art, in fact I think we should use that thumbnail box Naonak posted because that was legit and its styled more after Xtreme.
Is this artwork by Sega?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sonic_Xtreme_Box.gif
If it's legit, somebody could resize it.
Oh, I forgot what I was saying, anyway... I don't feel like making a box art but I did make this shitty logo based on the Sonic X logo you guys could use. The style doesn't fit at all with the game but whatever.
http://home.comcast.net/~doa5/shitlogo.png
And if you want the vector grab that here (http://home.comcast.net/~doa5/shitlogo.ai).
I'd recommend the vector if you guys are using Photoshop. While you're in whatever document you're playing with go to File > Place and find shitlogo.ai and hit enter. You can then place it where ever and since it's a vector you can resize it perfectly without making it look bad.

The only thing I have time for at the moment is to come up with a really quick "Sonic Xtreme cover competition" logo using Paint! Yep, I deleted all my other stuff of the PC and would love some suggestions for a GOOD photo/image manipulation suite other than Photoshop. Anyway, here is my effort:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q265/Parris1972/Soniccovercompetitionlogo.jpg
Bollocks in comparison to some (such as the one directly below) primarily because I ain't got nowt to do it on :-( More inspired by the old Archie comics and original designs tbh. I love the darker images coming up on here.
Edit: I love the fact that Sonic looks like he is about to do an internal search of passengers just getting off an Amsterdam flight!

Yeah I know that, anyway, what about changing the eyes (iris and pupil) to full black? cuz is the green iris what gives away it SA-esque origin.
Or we could do a mid-90s style rendered sonic to keep up with the original idea.

Sorry, this is the last time I post it, I promise lol - just messing around on it and doing very subtle colour alternations / replacements. I felt he needed a blue coat, but nothing over the top. I love the idea that an ordinary hedgehog became fixated with Sonic and felt compelled one day to steal some blue food dye, make his own "Sonic" outfit and get Xtreme. Perhaps he ate a bad mushroom in the garden! If I had more time I'd carry on, but I think we all see where I am heading and it's really not a contender, just a bit of fun. My money is on the one I previously picked, so good luck matey.

Wonderful work NaOnak.

Is it wise to use an Assembler logo at all? I mean once this gets to general release surely an assembler logo will lead to more traffic here...and numerous new members wondering where the hell the section that deals with releasing protos is. After all they won't see this section or know of it etc and I can forsee a lot of random posts......
Back on topic, wonderful designs guys, you should give yourselves a big pat on the back. I still personally think Barcode's 1st two offerings are the best by a country mile (especially as I have taste and abhor those gastly long boxes :yatta: ). Not feeling the love for Na0naK's sadly, although I appreciate it is a quality design.

On that note btw, I haven't added in Assembler anywhere because the image hosting sites are public access in most instances, so if someone decided to click on one of my plethora of other images, they wandered around and had a look at my stuff they'd see "Assembler" and the software title which is currently meant to be kept quiet. Other members of this site have access to other members photobucket accounts you know. I've got hundreds of them...
I guess it doesn't mean anything, having a competition however eh?! We could have decided to create covers for any old games title, but then again anyone looking for the thread in search is going to draw a blank. Hope nobody bloody asks as I'll just have to say "It's an ancient project".

If possible do the assemblergames logo in the same "sonic xtreme" style.
I think it would be nice to have a USA cover, and a EURO cover, and Japanese.
So far NaOnak has the US one on lockdown, so a EURO and JPN cover is what we need next!

My vote goes for Mark30001's covers.
There are lots of great covers here, but ATM I think Mark's covers style are the one's that have more in common with the original xtreme artwork.
and speaking of original artwork, when this game was being developed and appeared on gaming mags I could have sworned that some of them had a picture/mock of a cover, I remember seeing a cover for this long before this project.
is it just my imagination or does anyone else remember this??
btw: I loved jamtex's 1st cover as well xD

The X-treme box in that article, according to Sonic CulT, was one of the most frequently used ones in magazines and toy store catalogues, so I doubt it was just a mockup made by the magazine themselves. You never know, though..
Until further information arises, I'll assume it's genuine SEGA PR material - if nothing else because I've just annotated all of the boxarts to try and provide some chronological order as to how the marketing people developed the look:
http://xswoifyu.siperoonline.co.uk/Knux/Annot.gif
These are arranged in what I believe to be the chronological order of the boxart designs; you can sort of see my reasoning in the above annotations:
1. Earliest Boxart. Reasoning:
- Only boxart NOT to feature "SEGA" seal
- Logo uses incorrect font in this revision
- Stiffly-posed Sonic render with proportion issues (fingers, anyone?)
- Rarely used in magazines / toy store catalogues / online (source: Sonic CulT)
2. Second Boxart. Reasoning: Boxart is same as (1) apart from:
- Addition of the "SEGA" seal.
- Logo redesign including attempted 'fixing' the "O" of the font, showing the initial font mistake was realised - therefore unlikely to be earlier that (1).
- Commonly seen, mostly online (source: Sonic CulT)
3. Third Boxart. Reasoning:
- Logo seems to be developed from (2)'s (uses same / similar "X-treme" text, and uses 3D effect idea), so unlikely to be earlier than (1) or (2).
- SONIC font is completely fixed in logo.
- SEGA seal is present, so unlikely to be earlier than (1).
- Uses later design of the ESRB rating stamp than (1) or (2), suggesting both previous boxarts were made earlier than this one.
- Different Sonic model with fixed proportions and more intricate posing (head and eyes are now posed, feet / torso / fingers proportions fixed), so unlikely to be between (1) and (2) - why would they revert back to the old design?
- Full background render as opposed the hazy "clouds filter" backdrop of previous boxarts - unlikely to be between (1) and (2) for the same reasons as the point above.
- Extremely (or should that be "X-tremely"?) common in magazines and toy-store catalogues (source: Sonic CulT)
---
Of course, that's all speculation based on my own observations, so I may be wrong. If anyone can find any holes in my reasoning, feel free to tell me! ^_^; It seems logical enough to me, though..

NaOnak/Senn's design would be pretty cool if colored correctly.
Anyway, I really like how the picture kinda "invades" the space of the Saturn logo in this case:
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/3944/xtremeboxmocup8vu.jpg
This style used in Genesis since 94 and on other Sega consoles onwards (but not on the DC) was awesome at the time, so I think it would be great it we used it since that gives this beta more of a mid90s feeling.

Curse my inability to manipulate photoshop.
Upon thinking about it for a while I'll attempt to explain my idea.
Take the Sonic that Taucias used and place him on a black background toward the upper half of the box. This should in effect make him look like a ray of light coming out of the darkness. Use grap3fruitmans Sonic Xtreme logo staggered like this
Sonic
Xtreme
at the bottom of the box.
It will look menacing and still capture the original essence of the project.

My bodge job took about 2 hours and was originally with a black background with fire behind sonic, but I liked the comic book style background more when I compared them so I brought it back in. I think Senn hit the nail squarely on the head.

I also like the way the motion-blur invades the title space, infact Chris Senn's original picture has one of Sonic's feet overlapping the Sega Saturn logo. I think the Sonic render is hideous though, and no where near the quality of the original sketch.

The image I used of Sonic is actually from the 15th anniversary celebration (hence his fingers in a 1 and 5). I will work on a cover in the same fashion (good thing I saved the psd for the other layers) with a more retro image.
EDIT - Here's a quick attempt with the best looking older image I could find - I'm not particularly impressed with it - if anyone can provide a link to a better pose (decent size) from that era I might give it another go.

Thank you handofg0d (http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/member.php?u=4266) . I like you like it, he he ;) .
First I made one keeping the borders on Sonic, but later I tryed this one without them, to make it look like that classic Sonic drawings (like the one which you used in your last cover). I guess the result is better that way.

On a personal level I'm not overly keen on the 'Xtreme' the font especially, but other than that you've done a really great job there.
I would have liked to contribute as my ability to use photoshop isn't too bad, but as I'm not really too great at illustration I don't feel I could make anything particularly worth making since I could only use an image of Sonic that's already been seen so many times.

I finally had some minutes to spare and work on my cover a bit and clean it up, i have no idea what to write on the back yet
I went with this rather dull image for the front cover because it has a SX look (not sure if its really a SX image or not) and because IMHO looks like the type of image used in PAL covers. Im trying to make mine look as oficial as possible.
I would like to think that if the game was released back then it would have a very similar cover to the one Im making.
Once again let me know hot it looks!
There have been lots of cool covers submited but I think most of them have too much of a 2007 Sonic look(ie Johnny's) or plain Sonic 1 look (ie NaOnak's).
As for the new submissions I liked Taucia's US insert but I think it could still use more tweaking, and I also liked negora's PAL cover but you should remove that +6 logo,PAL games at that time didnt have those, and I also think you should try some other fonts for the 'Xtreme' bit.
edit: for the Joke cover's I think Jamtex's cover rocks!

ASSEMbler: You're referring to the text to the right of the "compact disc" logo, I assume? That came from a Japanese cover that I scanned. I only have 2 Japanese games, but they both have that text. I assume it's kanji.
cez: I tried to fit Sonic to the style of the 15th anniversary Sonic, and the logo was based on the original Sonic the Hedgehog cover, but besides that it's all original.
the text is indeed japanese and means "instruction manual". as you know (almost) all japanese single CD games only have that stuck into the jewel case serving also as a front cover.
other than that great idea! only the logo doesn't look that japanese to me. maybe change that.

Thank you all :) . It makes me very happy that you like this cover, although a big part of the merits should be for Chris Senn, since it's based on his original design. I just took and adapted it to my own "taste".

Just a thought - since a bit of his ear is chopped off (I assume because thats the edge of the source image) would it be possible to scale the image down just a tad so that the edge of his ear cutoff point lines up with the segasaturn sidebar, so it looks like it's cut off because of that? just think it might look a little cleaner that way.

Actually thats really rather cool.
I appreciate that the contest is to find a cover for each region..but if possible could the file when released contain many of the examples from this thread? (assuming the designers are happy to be included)
Sure, personally I'll just burn the game to a cd and be done with it, I doubt I'll bother to print out any cover at all. But some of the creations in this thread are great, and whilst 3 'winners' could be chosen, it would be smashing to have a little portfolio of all these great covers! Maybe an extra file for assembler/oth bit members and just the 3 region winners for the main release?
Regardless, I'll be hounding you Barcode for your first offerings lol.
