But I think programmingace has donated, is he a member again?
Someone might have said something on another board, even though they aren't supposed to.
We do have people who are on a lot of boards, and I didn't expect a perfect information
blackout.
We welcome anyone willing to help. This forum is to just minimize exposure to
the internet at large.

Just out of curiosity: Will it be known that the ASSEMbler forums paid for the Xtreme Demo or will it be a anonymous dump?
Dot50Cal
06-01-2007, 06:23 PM
Pretty sure it will be known, seeing as the cover which will be included with the rar has Assemblergames on it :P

I'm sure someone from the emu scene can hex edit an Assemblerr logo on the start up screen right before the game loads up. I have seen it done to the PSX by modifying one file, but I don't know if the Saturn has a similar setup.
Yakumo
06-01-2007, 07:31 PM
You could hex edit the text if it uses any standard Saturn font very easily. I and a few friends used to do it on SFC games. I remember the first one my mate did was Final Fight. He changed the Push start button text to "Insert Coin" for that extra arcade feeling :)

Forgot to write that I've bought some sweet new S0-N1-C plastic support :)

Will you consider other forms of payment for future donation drives? Many of us either do not have a paypal account, or do not want paypal to profit off us due to things in the past.

Well this isn't something I do all the time, and it's for this one item. Most of the future releases won't require any money.

This is getting too slow, I may wind up having to stop all this if we can't get it together in time.
We have only three more days or so.
After that, there will be too much news and loose talk about it
to make it work.

if things get really tight, I will put in a few more purchases.
Also, there are members of another forum who have expressed interest in this exact build. These guys aren't some 14 year old kids who will make it known to the world that this auction is going on, and would probably be willing to donate a bit. If things get rough at the end and you want me to contact them, let me know.

I know of a few members from another forum whom I am sure would love to donate to this, and have expressed interest in this specific build in the past and would keep quiet about this auction at the same time. If you need their usernames and such for contact, let me know.
This kind of thing has been tried before and I think it's in all of our best interest to just absorb the funding blow on our own. Cross board donations don't really help as much as they cause an uncontrollable wild fire.
Don't worry though, we'll get it together in time. I'm sure of it.

Just thought I'd mention that I may not be able to donate until the end of the month. Money is tight. As in, yes I can't afford 5 dollars tight. If the purchase is over by the time my finances straighten out, I'll see what I can do about dumping cash into the battle chest, if a method is set up for that.

107 individuals have bid on average three times each. Yet the video has over 610 downloads from the 800 or so people in this group.
This is a bit pathetic. Please find it in you to donate at least $5.
It's not fair to have the few support the many. Not after that
many downloads.
I am sorely tempted to trim this special forum down to only those who
are willing to contribute.
GarethDE
06-03-2007, 07:28 AM
Whoa, it is pretty annoying that so many people know enough about this to download the video but aren't contributing to the demo's release.
I've bought 10 items so far and am happy to buy more in order to help secure this thing before the time runs out, but I can't justify paying the remaining $450 myself. I wouldn't hear the end of it from the wife! =P
All you guys who haven't donated anything - please do. One item each would be enough to secure this thing for us all.
GarethDE
06-03-2007, 07:31 AM
Ok, I've bought 30 of these things - $168 from me.
Perhaps if the demo was kept exclusive to those who bid on this auction for a longer period of time, more people would be willing to place just a single bid?
P.S - I haven't seen the video yet. Does anyone have it?

610 downloads? Well when I looked earlier the thread had only had 477 views, so either your figures are screwy to some degree (especially as numerous of the 477 views were me, and I imagine numerous other members have viewed that thread multiple times also) or more likely people have been giving the link to others, numerous times. After all how can a thread have 477 views but content only linked in that one thread have 610 views/downloads? It can't, simple maths.
Good idea on the trimmed forum though, kinda what I was saying earlier. (perhaps introduce a second oth bit for donators only?) It'd be much easier to have 100 people with $20 to give than 400 with $5. Put it this way.....I'd be down for $25 every time, whatever the game happened to be.
Anyhows off for some more beer and celebrations. Will add more later tonight if needs be to hit that revised total today! (also don't forget there is prolly another $40-50 in the pot from the multiple bidders..as payments for multiple units should only attract one initial fee of the 20p,40c, whatever it is (ie ebay fees are 40c plus 3.4%..but you'd only pay that 40c once even if you bought 100 items on dutch auction)

GarethDE
06-03-2007, 02:25 PM
Wheelaa, I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that people streamed the file more than once - which would indeed rank as multiple downloads. Nor do I think it's unrealistic to assume that some of those people could have sent a link to friends on their MSN/AOL/ICQ/Yahoo messengers who might have been interested in viewing such a video and viewed it without even coming onto the forums.

My personal opinion is that it's very weak to come up with "sorry guys I couldn't bid because <enter reason here>".
Minimum bid was $5.60.
Even homeless people have more money than that in their pocket at any given moment. I have a really hard time believing that $5.60 is a large enough sum of money for anyone to not be able to afford it - especially people who have a computer, internet access and/or a car.
Anyway, I guess there will always be people like that around.
Kudos to all who bid - thank you. I've wanted to play this demo for years! =D
One question though - earlier I suggested that the total amount required was $100 less if we raised the money today. Dot50Cal suggested that indeed the amount required ($240 at the time) had already had this amount deducted from it, which would imply that the target was already $1900. The well done thread says 2000 GJ Points though, which implies $2000 was raised... if that's the case and $100 more than necessary was raised, any ideas what that extra $100 is going to be used for? I.e. are there any other unreleased items on the radar?
Oops, 1 more question - what happens if anyone who pledged money doesn't send it? What happens if the money that gets to the pot is less than the $1900/$2000 that's needed? =S

It's not the money issue in my case, I was willing to go up to $40 back a few days ago. Its that some people don't have Paypal, either because they had it locked because it went over in the past or do not want to use them. I could do bidpay, electronic funds transfer, check, or money order, but not Paypal.

Hey man, I think we can all accept that some people genuinely couldn't participate, but I think we can all also accept that others who *could* have chose not to and instead decided to watch from the sidelines. This is fine in itself as there is no law that says that you must take part in something like this, but when I know that those same people will be first in line to reap the rewards and download this .iso when it's released I just get pissed off.
Anyway, now's not the time to get worked up about freeloaders. We're all going to have Sonic Extreme gracing our screens very soon!!

Right the plan was to release games for archival purposes so they will not be lost in time. Having only a relative handful with access to it hardly makes anything impervious to loss.

Yeah so even those who are so poor that they cannot afford $5.60 will get access to it in the end.
Of course, being so poor they're unlikely to be able to afford the electricity that their Saturn and TV/PC and emulator will require in order to play the demo, right Wolfrider? =)
Of course, exactly how someone so poor has a house, PC, internet connection and enough food in their fridge to stay alive is anyone's guess.

This week or so :oh: , great stuff!
Could I just ask how this will be distributed? I see you've put the decent vid you made up on a torrent. Will the release to auction people go the same way or will there also be a rapidshare link (or some such link) as with the pippin file you have put up?
I only ask as from a selfish point of view a link to a hosting site, as opposed to a torrent, would be good for me.. I have no torrent software, don't know anything about it, wouldn't know what to do (I'd always thought torrent stuff was used for/by peeps wanting to get copies of current gen games, tv shows etc (?), so I've always steered clear)
I suppose ultimately it doesn't really matter if it only goes on a torrent style release...I could just get a friend to send me a copy after the 4th July public release...but then again a month wait could do me in!
GarethDE
06-05-2007, 06:35 AM
Wheelaa, I think Kevin said originally that there would be an email sent out to those who paid through Paypal containing a link.
Not sure if that's still the plan though.
You can download a simple torrent client like uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com) if you only want to use it to download this image file.
ASSEMbler
06-05-2007, 06:42 AM
torrents are just for file distribution.
One person seeds it, then every person who downloads it
adds to the speed.
Say 50 people download, it would be throretically
50x faster than downloading it from one person.
It's a private torrent server so you'll need a client like
etorrent. Then all you need to do is limit the upstream in
the options if you are in a upstream restricted area.
I have to limit mine to 20k to avoid getting "capped"

That's an unfair assumption. I hate to burst your bubble, but not everyone here is financially independent. There are members here who are students and still live with their parents and who don't make any money. So even if they wanted to give, they really couldn't.
I've donated to this site before, and I would gladly have done it again IF I HAD THE MEANS TO. However, sadly, right now I don't. I'm in college, I just finished my second year, and I'm home for the summer. My last bits of money went to pay for the summer classes I'm taking. I currently don't have a job, and my parents are kind enough to support me while I'm struggling to get through school.
To you $5.60 may not seem like much, but to me that's a nice little chunk of change. I don't appreciate you making light of my or anyone else's situation. You never know what people could be going through at the moment. I'm glad you and other people donated and made this possible. That's great. But just because you donated, that doesn't make you a better member than someone who didn't, but that seems to be what you think, or at least that's the message your post conveys. Funny, weren't you complaining about the "elitist attitude" coming from established members the other day?

Then would have a civil war and this whole 0th bit would most likely implode in the mess it would cause.

What ticks me off is how people use the feedback system as revenge. When I sell something and it goes smoothly I leave feedback instantly, my business with them is all but finished.
When I'm buying I leave it as soon as I get my item and it's up to par with what was described. I've haven't had any of that sort of problem with my current account but my mom has. Recieved a genesis cleaning kit about a week late and the system was entirely automated by the worst script system I have ever seen. They didn't like it and left bad feedback for no reason that pertained to the transaction aside from us leaving bad feedback.
