I searched on the forum for it, but I didn't find any posts about it.
What about the SMW rom for the NES (or Famicom, I'm not sure of which it was) that appears everywhere on the web? I think it was an unreleased hack, but I'm really not sure of it (It looks really extense to be just a hack).
Anyone knows if Nintendo had any intention to release SMW for the NES?

Super Mario Bros. 4 you mean ? ;)

No, what I'm talking about is a rom I saw on the web (and I have on my computer) of SMW for the NES. It looks like it was in a very early stage of development, but the game is complete (The gameplay, sound and graphics need a lot of work). Look around on google and you'll get a lot of results.

Looks to me like it was most likely a pirate. GoodNES name: Super Mario World (Unl).
I'm guessing this is the same one?:

It's exatcly that. If it is a pirate rom, this guys made a great job. I'm saying, have you ever seen that pirated Sonic The Hedgehog for the NES? :banghead: horrible.

Yeah, if you think that Sonic the Hedgehog is horrible, try those Super Donkey Kong unlicensed games for the NES. xD

I found it (I have GoodNES on 5 cd's for my PSX).
Damn, that was horrible. If I had to make something like that, I choose not to do anything...

Also, albeit we already know it's a HK pirate, here's irrefutable proof that this "SMW" game is not a NES prototype that was later ported and continued on the SNES.
http://disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/secrets11.html
scroll down after the image index and you'll be greeted of two REAL SMW proto/alpha/beta screens of Super Mario World showing an intro screen and world map quite different than the final ones, unlike those on that rom, wich are a rip of the original.

Who was claiming it was a NES proto? It's obviously not.
Good link, though.

No, no, nobody was claiming it was. The thread starter was asking whether it was or not, and it was agreed it was not (well, nothing new, right?), I just read the post and wanted to put that information for, you know, even if it wasn't known for it to be a HK pirate, it would not be possible to be a proto, because it's origin in SNES was different. It's a matter of timeline.
It the project had started as a NES prototype (wich is not the case, at least from the proof we have) it wouldn't have the look of the final SNES version, because there is proof of early SNES material that was pretty much different.

"Goodnames" are
Super Mario World (Unl).nes
Super Mario World (Unl) [a1].nes (it's an alternate)
Super Mario World (Unl) [b1].nes (it's a bad dump)
Hope this helps you find it ;)
Or try the Street Fighter II games for the NES. Totally brutal.

Í have this pirate cart of SMW nes, great game they did an amazing job porting this game! It does not have as many levels but all the worlds are there only with fewer levels. There is also a Snes Aladdin nes port floating around, amazing conversion also!

Simon_Belmont: Why don't you stop bumping old topics just to say "Oh I've got it" oh "oh well i got this unreleased game but only played it for a few minutes and it sucks". Seriously, you remind me of that playstation_museum moron who was on lostlevels that kept bumping old topics just for attention. Stop cluttering the board :banghead:

You don't have to read every topic around that is labeled with a "new reply/post". ;D
Besides, I only really see two samples of such undesired thread necromancy that is totally non-contributive to the topic(s) that has been brought back from the grave.
This is a message board, not a live chat.

I just give some more info about the game and tell my opinion is that a crime overhere??

Not a crime per say, but when you suddenly go on a bumping spree with information that is less that worthy of bumping such old posts, it's really useless and annoying, regardless of this being a "live chat" or not.
But really, just forget it. I don't care to go any further with this, I just have gone through this on other boards before, and regardless of whether I take the option to look at new posts or not (which is a stupid defense for why this should be condoned, honestly) I'll just shut up and say no more since you have a lot of protos so I guess I have to kiss your ass :)

You know, reviving old threads is generally frowned upon, when the post that revives it generally contirbutes no new information.
However, totally berating another member and acting like you own the place when you only have 30 or so posts is frowned upon also. If you have a problem, take it up with the Mods.

Bramsworth: isnīt it time for you to behave ?
Simon_Belmont: you have done nothing wrong in this thread, Bramsworth is just playing the big old boogyman. What is next ? he gets me on my ass, when I put out links to games music in "my" thread ?
Simon_Belmont , you are not a necromancer. Perhaps in Diablo 2 . But not when you come with info. In this thread.

Well since this has been bumped, for those of you who dont check out the websites thread, my site has a lot of pictures from SMW on the NES :)
I've got a "new" boxed version for the Famicom. Crappy pic taken by the guy I bought it from:
http://www.speakeasy.org/%7Esjmaks/pir/m2.jpg
If I recall, the controls were pretty crappy and I only played for a few minutes before filing it away in my closet.

Interesting! How did you get that? Ebay? Recent asia trip? It works fine on a regular famicom?

I remember seeing exactly that cart for sale in the street some years ago. I thought that it was another el-cheapo SMB clone so I ignored it.
Dammit!! Now I can't find it anywhere, why didn't I buy it? :banghead:

Got it online. It works as any other Famicom cart does. I've also got a CIB Street Fighter 2 for Famicom. There's a ton of those out there, I've got a bunch of carts, but mine is the only one I've ever seen with box and instructions.

I'm pretty sure that image is photoshopped, or at least it isn't from the game we're talking about. The graphics look really 16-bit, there's no way the Famicom can handle that.

As a general rule, if a game's ROM has (unl) in its name you can be almost certain it's going to have a ropey and mostly broken game engine.
I suppose spritehacked pirate games would be an exception, not sure if they get a different designation though.

As far as I know games with hacked sprites and levels are named as hacks, with the game indicated on the ROM title. For example "Mario Adventure [SMB3 Hack]" is a Super Mario Bros. 3 hack.

As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure this is the first thread I started on the forums... It's nice to see someone bumping it every year, brings back memories :P
