If I went to Tokyo next week and walk around a number of shops would I be able to buy a PS3 new without too much trouble?

20GB for 39,000 yen (http://www.gamengai.com/img.php?img=20gb.jpg)
state of affairs (http://www.gamengai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1550). Not that it's a big secret or anything.
EDIT: Underlined the links. God why someone doesn't take 30 seconds to fix that for the whole site is beyond me.

Yeah, not bad, but I'd rather have the big one if I was going to have one. As for yet, it would be a 50,000 (or 60,000) yen paperweight. No games I want, and very few on the horizon. I hate Ridge Racer.

Thank you. I am only really buying the machine as I want to play Mahjong Fight Club Online (play this far too much when I am in Japan, the smoke in the arcades is not doing my health any good) and will pick up Railfan, Motorstorm and F1.
I also want Gran Turismo HD, I will have broadband access when I am in Japan. How easy would it be to set up the PS3 and download said game?

as easy as setting up the ps3, downloading the game and playing it ;)

Heh, so true. Nevermind, I've got my JET interview (http://www.jet-uk.org) a week tomorrow, so with any luck I'll be living in Japan from this summer.

Yeh and be doing a job that you don't actually do anything in. JET teachers have life sooooo easy! Still, I'd rather have a real job than be a JET. It's great for a short term thing but if you are planning on staying in Japan long term I'd find yourself a better job after a year or so.

Yeah, that's the plan at least. I see JET is my stepping stone into Japan. Get a visa, make some money, pay off my debts and brush up on my Nihongo and then hopefully find a real job the following year. If that doesn't happen, you can always sign up for another year. Perfect, really. Just hope I get it

No, it's region-free for PS3 games. Probably the reason Sony is going crazy on shutting down eBay UK auctions for import PS3s right now. Don't see how they're going to stop people importing them once it's launched over here though.
Well, that's at least three Sheffield residents on this board, so we must be doing something right ;-)

i dont know why people even import the US ps3.. its twice as expensive and you still cant play all your psx/ps2 imports on it since those games are region locked..
another nice piece of news is that the PSU in the ps3 is 110/220V so no matter where in the world you are you can just plug it straight into the mains, sweet! :)

Doesn't sound bad to me.Well in that respect it is a good deal however JET teachers (NOT ALL) don't really have such a good reputation that's to a lot of asshats that come over for a bit of Japanese pussy. I was never a JET teacher but I did work in a independent school for two years doing my best to teach something I knew sweet FA about apart from speaking it. The amount of idiots we had in that place was unbelievable. Some of them so thick that they thought "the" and "there" were the same bloody word ! One guy didn't even know what a noun, adjective, verb or adverb was
Anyway, I wish you good luck in your adventure, Phinn  You're doing just what I did in 1998 but with a bit more common sense  I came over with no job to go to!

Yeah, from my experience, it seems most gaijin in Japan are losers (present company excepted ;-)). I feel almost obliged to go to Japan if only to make sure the Japanese know that not all foreigners are freaks and sociopaths.
Apart from all the obvious benefits to myself, I actually want to take the teaching thing seriously. I'm enrolling onto a TEFL module at my final semester here at uni and I know my English skill is up to scratch if nothing else.
I just remember how much I enjoyed French and German at school when we had the foreign language assistants in, probably helped by the fact all of them seemed to be female and gorgeous. From memory, most lessons revolved around the promise of cake.
The prospect of standing in a front of a class of thirty disinterested 15 year olds is pretty daunting I d, but with a genki can-do attitude (and cake), I hope I'll be okay.

Yep, agreed. I definitely don't think it's something unique to JET's. I've only known a few though. Two of my best mates were jets.

I haven't taught in Japan, but I have done a lot of teaching despite only being 20 :) Its scary but fun. As long as you actually want to teach the subject, you'll be fine :)
A lot of teachers I've met are doing it because they have to/it was the easiest career choice. Those are the ones that ruin school for the kids.

Hmm, look away from the thread for 5 minutes and it changes to a Jet teacher thread. :s
Well I am in Japan, but was too knackered to go out and find one. Which shop / chain would be the best place to look? 60 Gig for 49,000 sounds good. :D

Yeah, totally hijacked your thread, sorry! I presume Akihabara would be a good place to start.

So far no luck. :( Akihabara mainly either has shops that have sold out of the machine or have the machine at full price, best price has been around 52800Yen for a 60Gig but that was second hand. :/
Anyone know of any in Tokyo which would be less then 55000 New?

YOu should easily be able to find them./ Don't go to Akihabara ! Look anywhere but there. You can get a PS3 in EVERY game shop or place that sells games down here. Wii on the other hand is a different story.

He's looking for it for 50,000 yen though. Kakaku.com has the cheapest in Tokyo listed at 57,000 yen. I'm sure they're out there, but you'll have to look a bit.

I will take a trip to other parts of Tokyo and see what I can find. Some shops have the PS3 second hand at more then what it sells for new. >_<;;;
The Wii I have only found second hand and priced at prices above what they are normally. Y28000 or so.. :s not that I want a Wii the plastic waste of space it is.

It's a wonderful entertainment system. I'm no Nintendo Fan Boy yet I find it easily good enough. Graphics may not be PS3 quality but anyone with half a brain knows flashy graphics mean shit if the games are dull. Excite Trucks on the Wii is fantastic with the Wii remote. I've never been in to a home racer so much in a very long time. PS3 RR looks nice but it's just RR like it always has been. Nothing new. That's where Wii comes in. NEW IDEAS FOR A NEW WAY OF ENJOYNG GAMES ! Saying that, I play Dragon Ball Z with the classic controller because I find the Wii remote controls a load of crap :110:

I went to Akiba today. It was a bit of a dud of a trip... I needed a small keyboard & mouse for my emulation computer though, so it was worth it. Someone told me of a shop that had the 60GB model for 50,000 yen. Didn't find it. There are new ones on YJ going for between 51,000 & 53,000 though. That seems to be the best price in town.

Went to softmap in the end, found a number of second hand ones there, the guy behind the counter liked my Rockstar (games) t-shirt, and I was confused on why he took the one I had picked up back and picked up another one, but I didn't question it. When I got back I noticed that apart from the Pad (which I assumed they pulled out to test) everything was still cable tied and new, even the manuals were still in their bag sealed away, the PS3 looks new too.
I assume that this was one of the ones that someone bought to try and make $$$s on ebay, realised that they weren't going to and sold it back as it was going to make more money then trying to sell it at full whack with ebay fees.
Cost me Y52800 which isn't too bad. Been playing Motorstorm and Downloaded GT HD and love every minute of it. :)

The JPN version is such a good price, at under £250, especially with the Region A (JPN & USA) Blu Ray.
I already have a USA PS3 connected to the TV downstairs but at this price it might be worth getting one a JPN PS3 for the bedroom just for the Blu Ray functions!
