View Full Version : Wife of a collector?

Just wondering how many hard core collectors here have wives and what they think about their "hobby." I had another buyer recently ask me to not post feedback since his wife will see it and know that he bought it. I've had a lot of guys ask me to send them stuff to their work, and I even received an email from one angry wife telling me the console her husband just bought on eBay was not to be sold to him...heh. I also met a female buyer who has to work around her husband to get her games.
I'm single so I don't have to worry about that stuff...

I'm not married, but my gf considers my geeky obsessions (retro Japanese games and cars) to be 'sexy'. I can't see how, but I'm not complaining :)

My gf loves to cosplay and watches anime most of the time. Nethertheless games (except for RPG) are all too geeky for her! Where is the logic in that! Oh she does like Pop'n music as well, but anything not graphically "pretty" is geeky in her eyes. Thus if I'm playing GG she will say "Oh how pretty" and will not mind, but if I play a KoF game she finds it "ugly" and doesn't like it. I did try to teach her how to play GG when she was (a touch) drunk once, but quater circles on an arcade stick are slightly out of her ability! She is totally uninterested in my games collection, although I did buy her a white sega saturn and most of the angelique games once (she loves the angelique series) which she loved to bits.
Actually when I was in Japan I dated a girl who did not like games at all, but she would often come to a game centre with me and sit by me whilst I played for moral support and to cheer me on, it was quite nice - if a little distracting.
If I get married I will need it in the pre-nup that she cannot touch my games or complain about my hobby!

I've recently come out of a rather unique long distance relationship with someone very special (may she rest in peace) and I'd say if it wasn't for her economical situation, she'd most certainly been a much bigger collector of random collectible video game stuff than me.

This topic is definitely in the right place since collectors wives just might be the most rare and obscure things ever. :icon_bigg My wife however pretty much doesn't care what I buy with the exception of more kiosks. My gameroom is way too small for what I have now (6 floor model kiosks). She has put her foot down and said no more of those till we move into a house with a basement. Other than that though as long as I don't start spending Kizuna money shes cool with it.

My wife at first would call me an Otaku until I showed her what a real otaku looks like  Now she just calls me a maniac. She's always telling me to reduce my stuff which will never happen. These days however I think she has given up and just accepts it. She did saythat she checks my home page from time to time though to see what I've added  I just tell her that it was stuff I've had for ages but never had time to add it to the site. Seems to be holding up pretty well so far

I don't have a gf right now, but I've seen the gamut of girls' reactions when they know I like games. I met one girl, really nice, last year, and when I told her my hobby was playing (not even *collecting*) videogames, she had a look on her face like I had just admitted to being a homeless psychopathic pedophile. Screw her, I thought.
My last girlfriend was perfect -- she remembered the Famicom from her childhood, and so some games like Mario and Doraemon were so "natsukashii". But one time when I e-mailed her a picture of the latest games I'd bought that day, she said "What a lot of cassettes! Don't eat cassettes if you run out of food, please!"
So, yeah, a good attitude towards gaming.

Well you see this is my life as a artist and I admire art. I don't get what you mean by hobby when I have this stuff around me 24/7 unless you mean to say the person married for other reasons and now they are neck and neck with his collection.
Well all I could say since I am single  I have gotten the cold shoulder from my games when I talk about them or anything towards them I remember growing up and whenever I am at the computer playing or my videogames a lot my mother would throw tea or whatever to take it out on my stuff instead of disciplining me the ordinary way.
It's America and you have to deal with these crazy American women. That's all I could say on the subject.

Well, while my mother had no problem with me playin games my dad wanted to kill me when I started playin.
Is not that he's the macho-type like the dude from american beauty (in fact he's an intellectual) he was afraid I could become stupid cuz at the time VGs were just another product to most people's eyes. Anyways, he did stop complaining about my hobby long ago. Now we go play DaytonaUSA from time to time.
Now I'm not married nor I think I'll be that crazy to do so, and cuz yakumo did it, I'm trowing all my Saturn stuff. Cant take any risks you know:lol:
Now seriously, most girls are SHOCKED I play games since my looks doesnt fit into the cliché nerd type (I kinda look like a sk8ter, even when I can barely ride bikes) and after that they would ratter say I'm a liar or just laugh at it thinking it was a joke.
I once met a girl who actually liked games, but was also bat-shit fucking loca:-(

honestly ive always felt video games are the ultimate taboo with women, alot of them get really turend off by the mention of playing of them, but of course with dorkyness sorta being trendy now it is more accepted by some women . I remember once at school we
got together at lunch and had 5 players playing maro kart ds in a circle, needless to say some girls we knew came by with confused diguested looks and one asked "are you guys a cult or something?"
But some women i know dont really frown on it much, they mostly are clueless or pretend to have some intrest. Its funny but youd be suprised how many girls i know love mario kart or street fighter, still with women i keep it a practice not to mention that i play or own games just in case lol.

Yes you shouldn't mention the video games. Just mention your other interests like firearms including the desire to purchase fully automatic weapons. That'll get a much more interesting response. ;) That reminds me I need more deadly weapons. That's what I collect. Deadly weapons and video games.
I wouldn't get rid of my games for a chick unless she was perfect in every other way and doesn't mind the deadly weapons. You know you gotta have something to entertain yourself if you don't have the video games and she's not around.

"Money grubbing women of a collector"

"Where the hell are the normal decent women for collectors"

Maybe video games for guys are like cats for women. I only have a few rules, and if a girl has more than one cat, then I'm running in the opposite direction. I don't care if she's Carmen Electra. A female cat collector is the worst kind of problem there is. You will never rise about cat status so just give up now.
So maybe the women see video games in the same way? Don't want to compete for attention?

LoL. My GF had never even played videogames before (seriously) and held nothing short of disdain for them. So you can imagine the look on her face when I announced that my year end sociology project was going to be an analysis of RF Online (and that my prof actually approved the thing). Anyway, she started to warm up a bit when she saw some of my work and then *gasp* when a friend of mine and I were recalling Super Mario Bros she asked if she could play it.
Now she's addicted, it's frightening actually. She went from me having to teach her how to hold a controller to blowing through the first world and-a-bit as a fast as I can.
She's also a Disney addict, so I'm planning on springing Kingdom Hearts on her. MHUAHAHA.
So yeah, in short, she has some respect for me now. http://assemblergames.com./forums/images/smilies/045.gif

Some girls do definitely see games as a kid thing, and also feel threatened by their draw. It's cool when you find the ones whose older brothers had a SNES or whatever, they tend to be a lot more clued up. Haven't met a female game obsessive in real life yet though.

My ex-gf plays Conquer Online a lot. She didn't really play console games, though she didn't mind that I was a gamer/collector. She actually wanted me to teach her how to play the XBOX, since she had never played one before. I actually showed her my A'can stuff one time, and she got a kick out of it, since she's Chinese. She asked me why I had it :P

I had another buyer recently ask me to not post feedback since his wife
Never had this on the western side of things, and I mailed quite a few packages. I did buy from a buyer on YJ one time that asked me not to leave feedback, b/c he didn't want his family to know he was buying games.

Yeah, my fiance doesn't mind the game collecting or the retro Japanese cars. She's putting up with my shit-bucket of an S13 project right now, and I have assloads of games in the apartment.
As long as I don't spend myself broke or ignore her because of it, she's cool with everything.

I recently moved in with my girlfriend and have taken over the spare room with all my stuff. She tolerates it pretty well, has a fairly decent gaming lineage (7800/NES/SNES), and has even been recently talking about getting a pinball table at some point :)
She does tend to take the piss out of me buying all this stuff and then hardly ever playing 90-odd% of it tho...

My Gf of 2.5 years does not mind my gamming & collecting habbit to an extent.
Like to her it's cool I own an arcade cabinet. It's not cool tho that I spent $2k on an arcade collection (this was only after we were dating for 3 months) with money I got from before we were even dating (i pretty much did the job of 2 coders on a single project and was payed double my pay for the 3 month period).
So if it's free, she thinks its ok. If it cost money, i'm in trouble. :p
On the plus side, she love 2d mario games. So every once in a while we play a gba or ds game together, taking turns on trying to get further on a single save.

I was the g/f of a collect for almost 6 years....I have to say I hated him spending all his time playing games, it seems that even the little time we did spend together all he did was play. I'm not one for games, only games I ever really enjoyed playing with him were Street fighter, dark stalkers, and Diablo online, and a few other online games. I'm a Mario lover I love my first Nintendo system, he on the other hand was a sony whore. lol Closer to the end of our relationship I started to understand his reasons for his love of gaming and started to suppost it more.
We're currently not together anymore, but he's the reason I signed up for these forms, trying to keep up with him. And now we're no longer together I still find myself coming back to try and keep up with what's going on. I even want a DS lite, and can't wait for PS3 to come out :p
I'm starting to miss the days wasted playing street fighter when I use to sleep over lol

My husband doesn't mind it as long as i keep it tucked away in my study. He's never been a fan of gaming (propably because of the hughe age gap between us and his generation being from the pre-gaming eara) although at one point i did get him playing mario and excite bike on a NES.
He's ok with it as long as i don't buy myself broke, keep it in my study and don't overspend my time on them.

My fiancee will play things on and off, but really only like puzzle games alot. She will willingfully contribute/cosplay/do the anime thing, and thinks geek is sexy as a whole. Its great.
I don't have a girlfriend, but when (or if) I meet that special person, it should tolerate my collection and my hobby at all.
It's not a good relationsship without tolerating the others hobbys and interests.
But a little excitement over my hobby could be funny, I think :D

I have to say that in my experience I think American women (and Americans in general) seem to be a lot more tolerant of "geekish" hobbies - collections, gaming, comics, sci-fi etc.
In the UK there is a terrible self image thing going on and most women would be embarassed if their boy friend was to start talking about games in public or admit to being a gamer in front of her friends. It's getting better now that gaming is more mainstream, but the stigma still exists.
My girlfriend and I have big plans for the future. They centre around an arcade basement with pinball machines, a few coin-ops and a video game museum with bookcases of games that I have stored away back in the family nest. A very rare find, and a sure fire way to get a ring on her finger!

She likes RPG's and puzzle games for the most part - not a real gamer as such - lately she's been inclined to playing Sudoku which, for the life of me, I cannot see the appeal. Hmmm...saying that; she is studying to be an accountant so it does make a bit of sense...Give me baseball bats, uzi's and crack in GTA over Sudoku any day of the week.
Generally speaking, she doesn't mind what I collect as long as the bills are paid. I did have some trepidation getting into arcade pcb collecting but that seems to be going well - I've got my first cab arriving this weekend :)

Now i only buy expensive stuff now and again. I have a seperate bank account that pays for any gaming stuff, I get loads of stuff from Car boot sales etc & sell what I dont want on eBay. She liked tha fact my games sales bought us a new car :)
My only problem with her & games is she wont play them anymore, she always used to play PS1 with me back in the day but she lost interest & just plain refuses to play now.

My last real girlfriend was a fucking psycopath and despised videogames. God I hate that bitch. I don't know why I stayed with her so long. It might have something to do with pussy, I think.
The girl I had a short fling with after that was into games, then everything fell apart and she moved hundreds of miles away. Goddamn she was perfect. I am going to kill myself.*
Anyway, I think I'm just going to have to wait until they come out with sexbots or get human cloning down, so then I could just clone myself and change a chromosome around to make it a woman. I wouldn't be a very attractive woman, so some plastic surgery may be in order. At least we would have a love of games in common.
*This is a joke. Everytime I say this somebody always gets all concerned and thinks I'm really suicidal. Just so you all know, I will never kill myself.

My wife USED TO play games, and she's still into things like Diablo, which bore me to death. To describe how she feels about my hobby of playing, buying and collecting games and various other things [not cats, nor tiny sweater wearing dogs though], she's against it. In her opinion, game is a toy, and toys are for children. There's no way, aside from hypnosis, which I haven't tried, to explain what games are, when you collect them and how important are small details souch as spine cards.
"But honey, it's a real bargain, and the original package is intact. Can't we just get ..."
"Talk to the hand, buddy. We need to buy more important things. And if we don't spend it all, we'll save it for later. You never know when you need a huge amount of cash, that normal people spend on entertaining themselves."
She's weird that way. And it isn't just games. When I get a DVD [once a year that is. If I'm lucky] it better not be one of them damned 2 disc editions or any kind of special editions for that matter. To put it in simple terms, I'm supposed to feel lucky she doesn't make me download DivX movies, for which you don't pay at all, thus the cash can be kept for later ocasions, that never are something that I would want, and always are new closets or other nonsense we don't need, since the "old" stuff is still performing and looking nicely.
With time I found my ways around it, and I hardly ever get pissed off by this, like I used to. Whether it's vinyls [oh, the helish vinyls! why don't I download mp3's or at least buy a CD!? Do I HAVE to get vinyls?], DVDs, games or anything ealse, I can pretty much get away with it, since I have my space for all the game stuff, and it's tough to keep track of everything when you have so many, so I always hide it in the depths of my collection.
Now laugh.

My first ex was a videogame addict. She made me pot brownies in exchange for taking her to get her new Xbox and have it modded. We stayed in my room for the whole of christmas vacation getting all 96 stars in Super Mario World. Everything Super-Mario related, she's into (Virtual Alan would be her type of guy, I think). She was awesome... but not very faithful - and ended up meeting a millionaire on a cruise. After that guy was history, her next boyfriend's name was "Mario".
That, I consider awesome. We were still very good friends until a short while ago.
My second Ex never did play videogames as a child, but when we started dating, she became addicted to RPGs. We played Atari and Super Nes together. She liked watching me play shooters, and was VERY interested in videogame history as told by me. We almost finished FFX together. I still haven't been able to erase her file, even knowing it'll never be played again. If she spoke any English, she'd have become a member of this forum.
She finds Super Mario frustrating, though, and really hates the series. She and my first ex know each other from college and aren't very friendly to each other.
Now... My new girlfriend. She's all kinds of awesome. We plug in the consoles but never get to playing. That's what I get for having my TV and stuff next to my sofa-bed. We've been meaning to play Burnout Revenge or just fire up the old Flashback2 for like... a week. And I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna happen tonight either.
But she is seriously into videogames. She carries an SP everywhere she goes, for example, only to be able to play Harvest Moon. She was an anime freak in her teens (has all of Sailor Moon, japanese version, on VHS tapes, for example), and still is today, so we're very geeky together. She loves retro stuff, too.
You want to find a geeky girlfriend, go to anime conventions. Don't go for the scultural-body-cosplay type, as they only (generally) want a sugar daddy to maintain their Yaoi Manga habit. But there are great girls out there, even if most of them have serious emotional issues.

Mario kart - who wouldn't mind playing a round??
When i first met the wife, i got engaged into a geeky chat about building GBA software, which was mostly a monologue ;-) . Well 6 yrs later, we are married and have kids, and fortunately have enough space for a "games room". While she does not understand how much money is spent, she respects it as being part of my life (especially the devkit / console research part makes more sense to her), so i am a happy panda.
