I have a SCPH-50001 with a bad LA chip and a probably bad laser.

Anyone here ever fix this problem? I'm more intrigued as the costs to fix the unit
probably equal a new unit, but I hate losing :-P

Not sure if you've had any luck, but I ran across this site along time ago regarding laser fixes on certain models. This site describes coil testing, click on the link at the bottom to see about LA/coil replacement : http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserV9.htm

I've fixed several of these but have always just replaced the laser. However I've heard of many people who go through the trouble to desolder the IC.

50001 (V9 and V10) are so fragile. I suggest that you put a protection to the LA and laser lens after fixing them ( just like they did with the first PSTwo's).

Well I have one with the LA and coils gone, just wondering if anyone has ever attempted the expensive repair.

cant you just reeplace the laser with a laser out of another PS2? or are you talking about a special PS2 or something. If you need a laser I might be able to help you out as I have a toat full of nothing but broken PS2's and parts.

The control chip on the mb on that model burns out as when the coils fail, it tries to amp the low voltages to the correct level and burns itself out.
